  • #expat #relocation #expatliving #movingabroad Being a new expat can pose some unexpected risks and dangers that one might not think about or understand, even after being one for quite some time. Relocating to a new country means breaking with the social constructs, resources, family, and friends that you used to have. What was common knowledge before might be lost to you. How society works might be surprising. How can you adapt?

We want your relocation experience to be a safe and successful one. But many who choose to move abroad don't think through what that really means and often make the mistake of isolating themselves in a new country and only when something goes wrong do they realize that they are not prepared for what to do in an emergency situation or may not be able to identify and protect against someone looking to take advantage of them.

How many people have seen the videos that have obviously prompted this? Many people have been sending me these literally daily. Have you considered how accidental isolation in a new country might cause you to be at risks you never thought about before?

Ive seen all the videos. Definitely living isolated made an impact in hiring the wrong lawyer initially and that cost her dearly. Because of that she was out money, the family was pissed, and they lost of the chance to mediate without a judge.

@@ColinUnger and those are just the concrete pieces. like all my local police know me. not personally. but we all know who each other is. they'd never mess with us in jail like she says. and news on a judge would be easy to get. it wouldn't be limited to police rumors. they are missing the standard information channels most people have too. and she says the whole country has no judges. definitely not true. she's still repeating scams that she believed as if they are true. there might be a shortage. but there are many. Rivas has judges just like the rest of the country. it's clear even months later they never got to a point of having a full picture.
from the beginning the expectation would have likely been seeing a judge in Rivas.

Honestly, I don't know how you can come up with different and interesting conversations EVERY DAY!!!??
You have a unique ability to always make it a pleasant and informative experience. We're targeting Nicaragua for retirement and your videos provide a wealth of info.
    Thank you Scott.

Ha! Good timing on this video. I got stung by a scorpion last night in my house in Granada. Having never experienced this, I didn't know if I was dying or if it was nothing to worry about. I made a couple frantic calls to locals who talked me down off the ledge. As I continue to travel I will be researching more thoroughly how to access emergency services, etc.

Excellent video. Living out here in rural SW Nebraska, I have unintentionally prepared myself for many of the things described. Because of the poor or often non-existent healthcare, I keep tons of meds and medical supplies on hand. Waiting on an ambulance could well cost you your life in many situations, so you drive yourself or find someone to drive you. Forget dental emergencies. Having lived in Europe, the 'surprise factor' traveling abroad is low, thankfully. Not familiarizing yourself with basic laws, or worse, assuming as many Americans do, that everything is 'just like at home' is just stupid. As usual, awesome video.

I have moved from the Netherlands to Canada and even if you look at both Western countries, it definitely takes time to get the exposure and knowledge to make long-term decisions like starting businesses or buying houses. My advice is always and will always don't stand out and try to blend in. If it's meant to be it will still be the case years from now, but at least you are then making decisions with a more solid foundation. I would never rush into anything in another country where I don't know the culture, language and always want to remain flexible.

Many important points well addressed, Scott. Thanks!
I'm sure you must have seen some of the Medellin Guru content for expats already in, or planning to relocate to Colombia. Some free info more available upon subscribing to their paid access site. Seems to cover a wide range of expat relocation and readjustment questions and issues. From legal stuff to paying your bills, etc. Is there anything like that, in the form that they are doing it, that you know of in Nicaragua? Aside from people just basically in the SJDS real estate market?

There's nothing like that that I've ever heard of in Nicaragua. Closest thing would be this video from Jack...
      ruclips.net/video/IciwSSwUFA4/видео.html&pp=ygUVamFjayBwaXRtYW4gbmljYXJhZ3Vh
But it's because of the lack of real info about this that I'm working on my new FREE, PUBLIC no subscription needed expat course both for general expating and for relocating to Nicaragua.
Although some of those things are tough because how you pay one thing in one town is different than another. Many things are not uniform.

@@ScottAlanMillerVlog Thanks for that link! I do remember seeing this a while back and being super impressed by the amount and scope of great content he squeezed into a single vid.
Anything you put out along the lines of a course would be greatly appreciated and no doubt help those of us thinking about relocating there. Free is of course awesome, but I'd say you shouldn't hesitate to charge a fair price if you want.

If you aren't isolating yourself in an enclave and just staying home all of the time, you should be fine. I've never met anyone that ended up isolated (after a few weeks at least) without making an effort to be. In the example videos that we were talking about, this was clearly a family that chose enclave living, inside an enclave zone and somehow got residency but didn't have a lawyer (you can legally do that, but I don't know anyone who would - lawyers are cheap and the residency process is an important time to get to test one out.)
If you live outside of an enclave zone, and you like leave the house EVER, you will make local friends and you'll likely find expats unless you are super remote.

Search RUclips for 2 months in a Nicaraguan prison. There’s a women telling a story about her husband being arrested for being at fault in a car accident.

on her part 5 that came out days after i recorded this (but weeks after she did) she talks about how having had basic community connections like a lawyer would have protected them and made the whole thing not happen.

what's odd is she is living in Canada and very afraid. she seems to be hinting at the fear of retaliation from the Canadian government the whole time.
