Thanks so much for doing a demo with Buffalo grass! This is something we native plant people talk about but not enough of us have experience. This is important work, so thank you! Will share this with my community.
@Bdigital9482 I'm not jealous in the least actually it was just a comment on how the DIY channels are not really directed at the majority or their viewers with all the "sponsored" or non sponsored equipment these guys are using more and more lately.....just my opinion
I am so happy you are doing a trial with buffalo grass. I'm in central iowa and will be prepping to seed buffalo grass next spring in an area currently infested with quack & field grass (hence the early prep).
I'm very excited about this project. I just bought buffalo grass! I have a very small area and am going to try and grow plugs and then transplant. Can't wait for your updates!
Funny. I just planted seed for an area that had a gazebo. 15’x15’. Let’s see how mine turns out. I didn’t want to wait until fall because it will be in the shade. Plenty of sun now.
I planted buffalo grass last June.. in central north Dakota. Long story short.. neighbor of the lot tried to help and sprayed a trimec with dicamba on it to kill some dandelions and violets... Now I have a dead patch of buffalo grass. Good luck. Just watch the herbicide.
i have a question have you had like a bermuda grass try to take over. im in Tennessee and i have a tall fescue and bermuda is trying to take over and it doesn't like my shade in the front lawn
I'd love to see more content covering low water use lawn options! How much watering does Buffalo grass need compared to typical ones like fescue and rye?
How much sun is considered partial to full shade? My lawn averages 3-5 hours of direct sun, rest is shaded by massive trees. Assuming this would be considered full shade but not sure.
Ryan I would love to see you try an experiment with the warm season grass this fall by overseeding with PRG. I live in the transition zone in illinois and attempted Bermuda, but really disliked how long it stayed dormant into late spring and my yard looking super brown and crusty. Its greened up a ton this summer now, but going to try to overseed PRG to keep it green throughout the year!
How about the CON of price! 5 years ago it was $5 pound. Now it is going for $50 a pound. I've had to give up seeding and have started working on the spread of my existing buffalo grass.
In the past I have waited until late fall and just broadcast lawn seed. In the spring the seed germinates and we have the beginnings of our lawn. I have dne this for all of my lawn. Cheaper than sod. Can I do this with Buffalo Grass seed? Thanks
How far north and how cold is this tolerant? I have a large boulevard area approximately 1k sqft. It's cooked since last season so not much there already.
Buffalo is one of the most common turf varieties locally (Sydney, Australia) - with Kikuyu (yuck), couch/bermuda and zoysia. But I've never seen seed, only turf rolls. Our most popular varieties - Sir Walter for Buffalo, are I think sterile. Any idea why? When are you trying Bermuda? Tahoma31 might survive your winter.
Australia Buffalo Grass is not the same as what is being planted in this video. In Australia, Buffalo Grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) is actually what the U.S. refers to as St. Augustine Grass. The North American Buffalo Grass (Bouteloua dactyloides) is a native prairie Grass with much thinner blades compared to St. Augustine.
I dug down 8 inches in hard clay maybe 50 square foot patches broke most of it up to a fine even base wet and set the ground soaked it washed it flat waited the next day hot hard dry then I'd put the Scott's blue tall fescue seed and make it look good all speckled like pepper then I'd wet them gently to stick them to the dirt then I covered them with 1.5 inches of dry fine clay then washed that flat and heavy 2 or 3 times in the baking sun then I water it at night then leave it for 2-3 days then water at night and the next day but watch so you don't eater before the rain unless you water while it rains and you only give it a little to stick the dirt flat it's like a micro climate and just modulating that kind of watering schedule I repaired over half my parents lawn of 10,000 square feet I did the critical areas like next to the road, next to the house, and ditches driveway and patches got the point there was landscape islands and flower beds and I would just dig settle and pile while controlling the soil moisture I would wet the pile and dig in and take soft warm wet clumps into a bucket it was like a big thing of brownies or cookie dough and I would crumble a little add seed maybe water more seed then dirt and water then I'd just supplement water to previous old areas just watering everything at different times leap frog jumping all over trying to not do too much while still planning ahead and maintaining
Hi Ryan, I planted some tttf last week in about an area of 8 feet by like 30 orchestra wide, gas company work, I don't know y they didn't put the grass they ripped up back?, my question question is, do u think it will grow? The Temps have been mild and cool at night
Glad to see ya trying out Buffalograss! Obviously a huge fan, considering I made multiple videos about it. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, comments, or concerns getting it established.
0:20 that map is gonna need some serious redistricting... anyone have a black sharpie? Don't just stand there, rake the forests and stop these wildfires!

Hello I want to buy your product what would you recommend for hot summer

Yes! Buffalo grass! Need more Buffalo grass coverage
I'll use my garden weasel to break up the soil, just kidding, I'll grab my Ventrac. 😂😂😂
I still watch all of these channels but sadly that's how they've all become no DIY equipment quick explanation then the big toys
@@thomasmeagher4801why be jealous? “Sadly” it’s a business and equipment is a thing guy.

Always wanted to see Buffalo grass
I've been looking forward to this and the Bermuda. So spriggin awesome.

Looking forward to this, Buffalograss is super interesting
That Shade Fescue looking nice @1:39 !
First Aussie 😁. Ryan , lots happening on the Lawn Ranch 🤠

Interested to see the leaf texture comparison to cool season grasses
Garden weasel or Ventrac? Decisions decisions...
You have just summoned the rain. 😳
You’re a mad man! 🤣 how many plots do you have now!?
Another interesting option to check out.
Major flex with the Ventrac 😆.
Funny. I just planted seed for an area that had a gazebo. 15’x15’. Let’s see how mine turns out. I didn’t want to wait until fall because it will be in the shade. Plenty of sun now.
What brand of straw blanket do you use?

Can I overseed by just soaking the soil and spreading a layer of topsoil after spreading seed? Cause I don't have the tools to power rake my yard.
How much sun is considered partial to full shade? My lawn averages 3-5 hours of direct sun, rest is shaded by massive trees. Assuming this would be considered full shade but not sure.
Full sun is generally 6+ hours. Full shade is generally less than 4 hours.

weird not getting notifications at all any more when new vids come out. 1 month behind your current vids.

Super curious how it turns out as a turf and how it looks. Also how aggressive it is as there's not much info out there on it
Any update on this?

I’m in Omaha and I’m wondering if putting some Buffalo grass in my oldddd multi species lawn would help give some more green to the summer.
And history suggests that Iowa will be getting some heavy rain now since Ryan has put down seed 😂
Did you use one of the improved turf type varieties like Sundancer?
Looking forward to the results! Is this a seed your currently carrying or going to start carrying on you web site?
Do you have any advice on how to deal with tree suckers?? They are terrorizing my otherwise halfway decent lawn this year
I think I’m gonna throw in the towel for lawn care this year, just got a $400 water bill
Is that new hay or is that the one you reused?
Where’s the Bermuda grass Ryan?

Do you have any info about grasses that develop very long roots? My grass is brownish at the moment, and I'm too cheap to water it.

Baby Buffalo grass should be popping up now. It’s been 9 days.
👍🌱

Is this going to be the new sissy grass?
First
It’s OK to say climate change.
