Your observations of shape, form, color, light and composition are spot on, Michael. Thank you again for explaining your thought process while you paint. It was a gray day that a lot of painters would have passed up, yet you brought it to exquisite life on canvas. Your videos are much appreciated.

You are wonderful at explaining and demonstrating what you are doing in real time. I appreciate hearing about your art process, including sketching, blocking in, mixing colors, laying down paint, using color compliments, making adjustments, etc. You are a fountain of knowledge. Thank you very much Michael.
Totally agree.... Great loose impressionism....and from afar appears realistic.... One of your best with the ocean. I'm a painter of the sea, water.....but not loose brushwork as such... Your signature brushstrokes and color mixing in this one appears easy however it's not...this is work of a truly great plein air painter.... Thanks for explaining your process... I found filming the ocean and taking the footage back to studio and having it play on screen I can paint in the studio without the elements ...something that has been helpful on those days where the environment is overwhelming.
You have an amazing talent not only for painting, but for articulating your process and thoughts while you work. It's incredible how much I can learn in a short video like this, I don't know any other artist who can pack as much useful information into so little time. Thank you so much!
This was enjoyable! I haven't painted with oils for a very long time and I often miss it. but I got addicted to watercolors. I found it interesting to see you develop the waves. I know that water really is green - in bulk, at least. I was eating in a restaurant that was at the Little Wale Cove on the Oregon Coast years ago an saw the water coming in, in swells and it really was green. Since then, we remodeled our bathroom and part of the tile I ordered was listed as 'clear' for the color, but it is a green - the color you see when you look at the edge of a car's door window. Then when I filled the water in the extra deep tub, it matched! I was surprised! As far as painting the waves higher, what you were painting was outgoing tide and lower waves are because there is more water going out than coming in. I do love watching waves! I love the resulting painting! I could sit and watch waves all day!
Beautiful painting Michael. I absolutely love water, and always want to paint it, and I always struggle *sigh.* I can paint landscapes almost entirely of greens, and one can tell each bush/tree from the other. I can paint a realistic forest in shadows and light, but struggle with water. Thank you for your wave videos, and great explanations of what you're doing, and why.
Michael…..This video deserves 5+ stars…. just an excellent description of careful observation about 10 minutes in through the rest of the video of looking at the sky, looking at the water, how reflections and how the water mix and how you dealt with it in the whole process at the end of the video about standing back and looking to make final adjustments and the time that it takes is, right on. Great work! Cheers -Greg
Thanks Greg! it's funny how my video making process has evolved. There was a time when I would not have been able to paint, film and talk at the same time. More to come. Glad you're finding the description helpful!
I love how you brought the darkness to the sand adhering dioxazine purple to give it that natural wet sand look. Kudos on the waves you bent with the close up water movement sweeping swiftly into an awesome composition 🌊 Thanks Michael 👍🏾
Cedric, 😁, I see the memory of your “ unbridled “ enthusiasm as Michael showed fans a most beautiful , pink sky at Stowe lake, the words artfully spoken, “ I want everything “ , and, you did it ( had to say hello Cedric ) 🙂💭
OMG! The ocean sounds are so amazing, so relaxing... What a great spot! The painting looks so beautiful. Perfect and realistic, full of energy in motion. Have a good one! Cheers!
This is a great compostion over a very nice format. Evidently seascapes look always better in panorama format. The studio painting behind you is one of my all time favourites. I think I already told more than once LOL. Can't believe you haven't sell it yet.
Great point at the end about tinting the white water. I'm an acrylic plein air and mixed media gal. I usually use the payne's gray by golden in my white water, but I believe that color is a bit different than in some lines of oil paints. More of a navy blue with red undertones. I'll have to try mixing up a light lavender some time. I may be moving closer to the Sonoma Coast from Sacramento this year (fingers crossed) and am excited get back out there. Your videos are motivating me.
Overcast days definitely show subtle value shifts on the water ... When you mentioned to stand back to view color of actual wave scene with your painting this is so important to do... observation is the key to getting the values correct
Nice the execution of paint brush stroke of the waves of sea water looked really moving great composition and know how to work brush technique thank you for this artful video.
Your efforts have really helped me slow down my thinking and entrust more of my efforts in "macro" strokes...for me your work emphasizes so many good things - depth through value changes and the ability to go back and course correct with color...thx...

Thanks for sharing your observations and explanation of your steps with us. I really love how you handled the wet sand verses the dry sand, nicely done.
Great painting, and great video editing. You combined some excellent painting instruction, with an immersive experience on the beach. You are a great artist in both oils and video. I'm impressed.
Thank you Michael, as always a wonderful video. The screen considers anything "dead air" when you cannot record what is going on inside the brain and/or the heart when deciding what to do next. Viewing the work from a distance and the exercise you get moving back and forth help!

Really helpful. One thing I really struggle with is painting sparkling light where the light is at it lightest. Sparkles are never bright enough- thoughts?
Adding glare or sparkle to the water is difficult. If your sparkles aren't bright enough you need to darken the surrounding water. White is the lightest/brightest value on your palette. Keep darkening the surrounding water until the bits of white look like glare/sparkle. Hope that helps!
I could use a GoPro but my videos would look very different. I hold the camera very close to my work in order to show the paint application. The GoPro has a wide angle lens so the work would look too far away for my taste.
Ciao!
