The animation of the pilot is remarkable. Peter Chung's beautifully grotesque take on human anatomy is fine in this pilot. There were several times in the show where they attempted to emulate Chung's style with extreme close-ups (starting at a microscopic level as it pulled out) and showing the inside of mouths. Some people are like "ew why'd they show the inside of that baby's mouth?" Because that's how Chung rolls. Check out the Liquid Television shorts of Aeon Flux. Chung is a little obsessed with teeth and tongues... though it's somewhat more innocent and cute in this pilot.
fun fact the blue shirt was actually a ploy to catch out bootleggers that would steal simpsons art for their bootleg merch so you knew that if it had a blue shirt, it was a fake, since they changed it to a red/orange shirt later. tommy's red/orange shirt is just his pajama shirt and his normal one stayed blue
I was 5 when these shows came out. I grew up with Nickelodeon and remember these cartoons and the such so much more then anything else. Nothing could compare to the animation, comedy and plot of Nickelodeon toons. It was different and weird and I loved it
I finished watching the original 65 episode run of Rugrats and I loved it. Entertaining, funny, charming and creative with so much substance. I'm about to start watching the later seasons which I heard you either like more or less than the first 3 seasons.
Yet, Germain cites them as the driving force behind the series, even though Tommy's the original protagonist, Chuckie's the deuteragonist, Angelica's the tsundere antagonist/sometimes protagonist, and Phil & Lil are there to provided gross-out humor (when together, as they're known for eating bugs, worms, and gooey things that wiggle & they originally hated to be separated, despite their constant back-and-forth arguments usually resulting in tussling between them) before their growing individual characteristics (not just physical differences like Phil having ear lobes but Lil does not & of course, Lil being a girl in a dress to Phil being a boy in training pant overalls, with each of their clothes being a variant on their standard outfit showing white-yellow ducklings on the side that has the constrating color scheme of tortqoise & pink, in reference to the whole "Blue [of which tortqoise is a shade of] for Boys, Pink for Girls" stereotypical theming in newborn infant's bedrooms that is used when Dill is about to be born but none of the parents yet know of the new child's gender, so Tommy & Dill's room is painted half blue & half pink to allow for either possibility to be a choice, although it seemed at first that the newcomer would be female until the movie revealed that Dill's a boy), like Phil as the resident deadpan snarker who speaks what's the audience is typically thinking ("Out of the way babies, only the smartest & prettiest girl gets the front seat!" "Then why is she in such a hurry?"; "Tommy, we 'forgotted' Angelica!" "You say that like it's a bad thing.") and Lil as the tomboy who grews into becoming more traditionally feminine, differentiates them.
@@OisinEmerald Fine. Here's the cliff-note, TDL;DR version... Yet, Germain cites Chuckie & Angelica as the driving force behind the series, even though Tommy's the original protagonist (i.e. main hero), Chuckie's the deuteragonist (read as: sidekick/secondary protagonist & the group's morality chain), Angelica's the recurring tsundere antagonist but can occasionally be a protagonist too against greater threats (not unlike Helga on _Hey Arnold_ in many ways, since Craig Bartlett co-created them both), and Phil & Lil are there to provide kiddy gross-out humor before their individual personalities began showing up in later seasons.
Patricia, I finished watching the majority of Season 4 and a little bit of Season 5 (even though I have watched Mother's Day a number of times) and I can see where you're coming from. The premises noticeably became more simplistic, the baby talk was increased and occasionally noticeable, and Angelica isn't as mean to the babies as before. I can understand why some fans may not appreciate these changes in hindsight. Personally though, I can forgive these changes. I can look past the increased baby talk as it isn't noticeable unless you've watched the first 3 seasons often. I can even get used to the more simplistic premises of the episodes as it does feel very fitting for a show centered on babies (you could even argue it's a sign of the adults improved parenting), and I can get used to Angelica growing to be more likeable especially considering that one of the last episodes of the original run did have Angelica admitting to the babies that she likes them. Not only that but I loved Season 4 and would even say it has my favourite episodes of the series so far, in particular Chanukah, Mother's Day, Vacation and The Turkey Who Came To Dinner. Plus some very fun episodes like The Lympics, Angelica's Last Stand, Heat Wave, Educating Angelica, Car Wash, Angelica Orders Out, Angelica Nose Best, Psycho Angelica and etc. Also, the love the animation, it looks more clean, consistent and colourful than the previous seasons. Season 3 was already a good looking season (so was the 2nd half of Season 2) but Season 4 looks even better especially thanks to the higher budget and more expensive animators. Those are my brief thoughts on Season 4 for now. Now I'm moving on to Season 5.
I don't know if someone already pointed this out but in the episode real or robot Tommy again had on a different color shirt at night I think it was red.
I remember discovering this pilot on RUclips as well as seeing it on Netflix when I was 7 and boy, does the art style look surreal when compared to the rest of the show.
actually Tommy wears the Orange shirt twice obviously the first is the pilot episode and the second is during the first season episode 9 I believe where chucky spends the night at tommy's house and they think that stu is a robot.
Same happens with any animated show, they slowly refine things as go on finding ways to cut corners and streamline the process. Sometimes for the better, other times it gets worse. Look at the first seasons of the Simpsons, or SpongeBob.
so I'm the only one that noticed that the pilot style is the style they used in the intro?
Nah, I kinda noticed that too.
Broncos running wipes pilot to final product

the pilot and opening were animated by peter chung. if you watch aeon flux, also animated by chung, it has a really similar style.

Long live the Rugrats
Ty
yes, I remember seeing that rug rats promo but I never knew it was from parts from the pilot.
Bart simpson's pilot blue shirt changed into a red shirt. What universes have we crossed into?

No, the pilot wasn't shown to the public until the year of 2001, on Rugrats 10th anniversary.
Interesting Pilot. I noticed neither Chuckie nor Angelica were even featured in it as opposed to the first episode.

Why did they have to show the inside of Phil (Or Lil)'s mouth...
It's Phil
The show always played with unique angles you'd never see typically.

love all 3

Alex Miranda also in the episode reptars revenge in season 1 Tommy wears the same outfit he wore in Tommy’s First Birthday
While Stu, Didi and Grandpa Shout to the background
James Duval Who caused the Bathroom mess
I wasn't even born when this debuted.
Me neither.
Same but I loved it when it was tounder
I was born 2 years after Rugrats ended :(
August 11 is 1 day BEFORE MY BDAY AWSOME!
great vid :)
I've seen Tommy with an orange shirt a few times
Have you seen the baby maybe episode when Ben and Elaine visit them?
Look its mee!
It wasn’t just Peter Chun who animated this. Brad Bird (Pixar/Simpsons director) also animated the food commercial
RUclipsr: The pilot from 1990
Me: 1991, anyone?????
Um uh ok
Pilots are usually aired the year before a series debuts. Everyone OUGHT to know this by now.
A girl can every girl can every girl can be a princess
I love the aniamtion in the pilot it's gives it a 3d vibe
I am actually watching this august
School starts august here.
the show came out when I was about to start preschool 😁
honeynation Rugrats came out when I wasn't even born. But at least I discovered it and it was one of my childhood shows.
I wasn’t born yet, either. Lol ‘94
How did they know what color was?
Oh And You Forgot To Mention, Chuckie Is Nowhere To Be Seen In This Episode.
Jo Cox because he wasn't put in yet, they added him and Angelica in after the pilot
Yeah.
3:23 So we're just gonna ignore the fact that they had very flexible disturbing looking necks!!??!
Actually, the pilot was supposed to air on nick with 4 1/2 more minutes of new animation since the original version was only 6 1/2 minutes long
Nickelodeon likes adding new footage to their pilots and airing them. Doug, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko, Hey Arnold, and a lot of other shows did that
The Rugrats pilot reminds me of the baby Herman short in the beginning of Who framed Roger rabbit
The cartoon was so colorful befor
No rugrats is known by at least a billion people
Chuckie finister shouldve been in this episode because it wouldve taught how to use the potty
I want you to do the Oggy and the Cockroaches pilot racist final product!!!!
Can someone tell me why the first season feels and looks so different to the rest of the series?
