"Marine Corps does everything as cheap as possible." Yup, here's a little story for ya:
I was stationed at one of the gates in Camp Pendleton (the midway point between the one leading to Oceanside and the furthest North gate, it's been over a decade, don't remember the name) while I was working with PMO in '07. A huge convoy of brand new Army humvees drives through the gate. 5 minutes later, another huge convoy of brand new Air Force humvees follows. It starts to rain, and 5 minutes later a convoy of Marine Corps humvees come through.
The lead vehicle had strings tied to the windshield wipers, and in order to operate them, the driver would pull one string, and then the front passenger would pull the other to bring them back down. Over and over. My fellow Marines and I on the gate saw this, and we were like, "Yeah, seems about right." It was the perfect illustration.

We had many similar experiences in boot camp and in garrison but the differences came when it came down to equipment and opportunities. In the Army we had all of the latest equipment as where he said they got the Army hand-me-downs. By the time we were halfway through our initial enlistments, I had already been to Airborne and Air Assualt school as to where he was still hoping to fly in a helicopter. Needless to say, the lack of opportunity to go to high-speed schools and other high-speed units was the main reason he did not reenlist after his 4 years was up. I was army for 15 years. The difference are slight depending on the missions and time period. I love my Marine brothers and sisters but I've never lost a fight to one and when we were stationed together on the battlefield we both had a go hard or go home attitude. The Army is just bigger so the perceived weaknesses are due to some support elements not being as hardcore, but elements like combat arms, maintenance, and special operations operate at the same tempo. We do tend to keep more troops that the Corp would probably cut but it's because like it was stated, we're bigger. Dicipline depends on the command. I've saw undisciplined Marines just like I've saw undiciplined Soldiers, but the Army would give more chances.

I was stationed in 29 Palms with 1st Tank Bn. We bought all our Humvees and tanks used from the Army.
We cross trained with the Army at Fort Irwin. All there Humvees were new, and had two radios, a GPS and everyone had NVGs. We had used Humvees and only the section leaders and above had two radios, GPS and only one PVS-7 per vehicle. We were still using map and compass to navigate.
I saw that the Army wasn't as ready to fight as we were. Being a Marine 0352 (TOW Gunner), from Pvt on up we can assemble and accurately fire a TOW missile system. The Army unit we trained with, trains TOW gunners at Corporal rank and above. So in the Army, if the gunner gets taken out the Pvt that is driving isn't trained to fire the TOW missile system. He can only drive away or hopefully there is another Corporal or Sgt that is trained in the Humvee. The Army unit that we trained with didn't know how to navigate with map and compass. We had to give them a refresher course, because there GPS wasn't working. That was the whole problem that I saw with the Army, is that they are too dependent on technology. I always did my navigation with a map and compass, either on foot and by vehicle. I was never issued a GPS. There was one time having a GPS would have helped me. It was at night, and the visibility was low.

The new marine organisation reminds me of modern German “groups” being made from up to 12 soldiers and subdivided into two “troops”. Traditionally one being led by the assistant commander. It seems the hard fighting in the Middle East causes an adaption of more decentralised command structures on the field.

I think the best way to look at the difference between the Army and the Corps is the Marines are like a shock force, while the Armys' purpose is to occupy and hold a position that the Marines cannot because of their lesser numbers. As a retired Army E-7, I tend to look at the Marines as generally better troops, because in bad situations some of the Armys' individuals leave something to be desired. I said "cool" and sat down to relax on the new sofa. It was then I noticed that although the sofa looked new, there was some minor wear with it. The S4 guy was still there and I asked him where the new furniture came from. He said they found out the air force were renovating some of their barracks over at Seymour Johnson and were throwing out all the old furniture. Naturally, we were more than happy to take it off their hands. Gotta love the cheapskate Corps.

    • @jeffnixon4534
      @jeffnixon4534 3 года назад

They only need the 1 call because they’re not technically a “branch”, they’re a subgroup off of the navy. If the army only needed that one call they’d be the same. IF we weren’t talking about general infantry, I’d say the army sf were probably already there gathering intel and such so the marines could have something to work with till regular army gets there, but we’re not talking about sf operations and I’ve never been a marine so idk. I know all the different branches are gonna pick on one another but we’re all working together for the same outcome. Freedom! All these heated arguments are senseless cause I’ve seen marines get their asses handed to them by army soldiers, and same the other way around so it’s basically a pecker measuring contest at that point, some are bigger and some smaller. Every branch is better at something than any other branch and that’s why we have different branches lol, just depends on what you want to do I guess...can’t be a marine seal or a navy ranger

No to much cardio before boot camp. Sprint, Job. Only need PT - pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, dips. Stay lean and eat small. You wont eat enough in boot camp so get used to it., Enjoy the ride.

Go with open mind, shut up and pay attention. You don’t know anything and your attitude will carry the day. Unless your leg is broken in half, don’t be that guy that whines about every little thing.

Get in great physical shape! Don’t run with a ruck or in the sand, no cold showers or anything like that, just make sure you can run for a LONG Time in regular PT clothes without it bothering ya, pull ups and push-ups everyday. Keep your head down, keep moving, NEVER QUIT!!! And you’ll be fine!🙏🏼🇺🇸🙏🏼

I've never had any animosity for the marines I've been stationed with I just felt bad for them sometimes. Nearly was impossible to promote compared with us over in the army (for example one of my best buddies before I enlisted was an e5 before I joined and eventually when I became e5 he was still here). Also the funding for the mission was obviously way less.

Marine Corps, Small Craft Company (infantry on boats), Kuwait, February 2004:
We convoyed up from Kuwait to Al Taqqadum, Iraq, in soft-skinned humvees. We had sandbags on the floors of our vics for "protection" from IEDs. I, riding in the passenger seat, sat sideways, facing outboard, the whole ride to allow my SAPI plates maximum protection if we were to take fire. Everyone besides SNCOs had iron sight rifles - I had an M16A2. We had NVGs but no batteries - I think we barely had enough for the drivers - and, of course, no PEQs, even if we did get into a firefight with NVGs. As the S2, and a LCpl, I had to "acquire" maps from Div without their knowledge before step-off (they claimed they already gave us our allotment).
We made it to TQ and we're waiting at the gate to be let in. An 82nd Army sentry soldier walks up and asks us "did you guys just come up from this road?" point at the direct we had just traveled. He continued, "we don't ever drive down that road... we always get attacked when we do." On TQ I saw female soldiers walking around with pink GLITTER UNICORN STICKERS on their buttstocks! I saw one female soldier walking to the chow hall with a M4, complete with an Aimpoint, a PEQ, and a 203. I stopped her and asked her what her MOS was. She responded with a bunch of numbers and I asked what that was and she said, "Administrative specialist."
    Best times of my life.

@@JamesonsTravels A wise Marine once said, "The Marine Corps isn't what it used to be... and it never was."
This was with regards to the "new Corps being soft." But I find that regardless of time you were in, it was the best of times, and it was the worst of times.
Cheers, brother, and keep up the excellent content. If you're ever interested in joining for a Marine lifestream chat or whatever, let me know.

Twice as an Army Grunt we went on field exercises with Marines as opposition. We out manuvered and whipped them in every engagement. Just saying.
They're tough guys but overly aggressive and have weak leadership. Of course this is just my experience.
