    One of my top 10 films of all time and my favorite Kubrick. I bought this Eureka release and I already own the Kino Lorber 4k.

      the Eureka and the Kino share the same transfer? same thing?

    Paths Of Glory is one of my absolute favorites. One of the few Kubrick movies that I feel as emotionally invested as I do intellectually. The bar scene gets me every time. Can’t wait to upgrade!

    Mine arrived today and I've never seen it. But a number or reviews sold me on it.
    My favourite Kubrick film is Spartacus - and though I may have missed it - critics mention Douglas et al and Trumbo's screenplay. But the focus is rarely on it being a Kubrick flcik.

    I have the Kino 4K and it is excellent. Have just checked the credits and case to confirm it's HDR from the camera negative but neither Fidelity in Motion or David Mackenzie are mentioned so I will buy, on your recommendation, the Eureka disc.
    Perhaps of note, the Kino 4K has an audio commentary by Tim Lucas.

      I am intrigued by the Kino disc to see how it does compare myself. The extra features on the Eureka disc are well worth having too. I think they are all unique to the Eureka discs and aren't on other releases of the film. Thanks!

      I wish you had watched the KL 4K version to compare. I own the KL version and wouldn't be inclined to buy this latest 4K version just for an incremental increase in quality

    • @twcc406
      @twcc406 5 месяцев назад +1

      I now own both 4K versions and have compared, and report as follows -
      (a) the Kino Lorber is DTS-HD 2.0-Ch 48-kHz and has 11 Chapters and the movie run time is 1h27m18s
      (b) the Eureka is LPCM 1.0-Ch 48-kHz/24-bit and has 9 Chapters and the movie run time is 1h27m23s
      (c) both of the 4Ks have alternate artwork on the sleeve and this is based on the 'O' cover art
      The image quality appears to be the same, I prefer the Kino sound, I prefer the Eureka package as there are more extras including the booklet.
      I also have the old Eureka Blu-ray and the 36-page booklet is essentially the same, but the old version has the Kirk and three firing squad 'brown' image on the front and an on-set 'brown' image on the back. The new Eureka book has a b&w battlefield image on the front and the Kirk and three firing squad 'brown' image on the back.
      My preference is the old Blu-ray booklet, and I will keep mine, as the rear cover features Christiane and she was kind enough to sign my copy last year.

    Thanks Elliot, I am a Stanly Kubrick super fan. I’ve seen Paths of Glory many times including in the cinema, second run of course. I have it on VHS, DVD, blu-ray and I, of course jumped on the Kinolorber release when it came out. However based on what you’ve just told me, I have just ordered a copy of this version. I love that slip cover. Thank you for the information.

      You really are a super fan of Kubrick! I need to see Paths of Glory projected on the big screen at some point in my life - I am slightly envious of you that you have experienced that! Thanks for watching

    It's a very powerful anti war film but like his other 50s films it lacks the innovation,the wow factor of his later films. It's particularly frustrating that his early films like Fear and Desire and Killers Kiss get excellent 4k transfers when there is still no upgrades for Barry or Eyes Wide Shut.

  • @bookiester

    Showed it in class all the time. Students didn't exactly think it's a masterpiece.

    I'm really glad that ou think the 4K is such an improvement on the Blu-ray. My 4K Eureka copy arrived last week (I had it as a pre-order as soon as it was listed). I also have the Eureka Blu-ray version, what I don't yet have is a 4K telly or player to watch that and the other 4K films I've got so far. I get 4K+Blu-ray copies of films once they hit my price points, of a minimal price difference between versions. Something to look forward to.

    I have the Kino 4K and the old Eureka blu ray. So I doubt I will pick up the new Eureka 4K. But this is a great assessment thank you Elliot.

    That’s enough for me to order a copy! Been hanging back for some solid reviews, and this is it! It’s a fantastic film.. one of my favourite war films of all time, so definitely worth the upgrade, especially as I’ll be coming from DVD. On another note, have you seen The Wages of Fear on 4K? I was considering picking that one up as well, though haven’t seen any reviews about it. Cheers!

      Hey Daniel. I have indeed seen The Wages of Fear on the BFI 4K. I'm actually planning a review video on that soon but the short answer is - YES it's absolutely a disc worth getting :)

    The 4K Scan & h265 compression are perfect, but I really d'ont like these B&W HDR presentation that were not originally graded with this type of luminance level. They should have stayed with a standard 100 nits reference level of luminance or just keep a Rec.709 10bits profile. It's not as bad as The Rule the Game french 4K disc, but still, the movie was not finished with this type of brightness. Nevertheless It's a solid presentation from Kino Lorber. The grain structure is pristine.

    Paths of Glory along with Spartacus are the only Kubrick films I do not go back to. I have the Criterion BD so I’m going to be holding onto that one for the foreseeable future. If it goes down in price then I might upgrade.

    Always a good assessment Elliot. But the constant camera movement in and out I find extremely distracting. It's difficult to concentrate on what you are saying. Surely there's more value in the message than in minor difference in the focal range.

    • @ElliotCoen
      @ElliotCoen  5 месяцев назад +4

      Thanks for watching and for the feedback! The reason I do it is that it helps audience retention, according to the channel analytics. I can't pinpoint why but it's true, people stick around and watch for longer when there is more movement within the frame or of the frame itself. I'm sorry you personally find it distracting! By all means, just listen to the audio in my video, as all of the information is conveyed in my words. I'm only really holding up the case in the visual side of the video! Cheers
