I have had both of these Cameras. I sold my 7d to a friend and bought a 1D Mk3 and used it for several years, then drifted away from photography for a few years. I just came back and bought a 1D Mk Iv and didn't even think of another 7D, there is nothing like the 1D, and if you have one, you know. :o)
Agree on those points you make, I also had a pair of 1D Mk 3 bodies then managed to switch over to a 1D Mk 4 and I truly loved that camera. The extra resolution and deeper buffer helped me get pictures I could not easily get with the older Mk3, and having 1D autofocus as well as better low light helped make it a better choice for me than the original 7D and even 7D Mk2.
Spot on. I have one and nothing like it. Bought it used a year ago from B&H. Perhaps I should buy another one! 1.6 crop sensor cameras are just children to 1.3 sensors especially 1DIV. Moreover, Canon killed the 1.6 sensors by squeezing too many tiny pixels into it.
Great comparison as these are the two I am considering (as a backup to my 5D3). So good that you posted the comparably priced 1D4 instead of the much more expensive 1Dx (mark 1 or 2).
How great it was to find your site. I was looking for a good reason why changing to Canon was a good idea . I found your segment on the Canon 7D Mark ii to be outstanding. Your segment gave me every reason why I wanted to change.

Great video Grant. I was considering trading my 7D MkII for a 1D IV to backup my 1D X and 6D. The video helped clarify my decision to stick with what I have for the time being. Well done.
Thanks for the detailed review Grant.I am also debating about these two cameras so it certainly came in handy.I know the 7dmark2 may have a couple of more features but it is not until you hold and actually use a 1d body that one can truly appreciate how good they are and why the initial retail price was so high.A few years ago i purchased a 1d body used and compared to other canon bodies with a similar spec it was obvious the 1d body was some serious piece of gear and more suited for professionals.
I guess it really comes down to personal preference, as in performance they are both quite capable. Always hard to go back from using a 1D body though, as you say, once you have gotten used their response and overall 'feel' !
Absolutely spot on Grant! I Own both of these models and can agree that The 1D Mark IV does hold a slight advantage when it comes to the Image quality, even though it has less MP, it is just a tad bit sharper in my opinion. Love the 7DII for the extra reach when needed but i find myself wanting to use the 1D Mark IV more often. The only bad thing about the 1D Mark IV is like you said...The menu system is a nightmare to get use to. Keep up the great Videos!
I Shoot wildlife with the 7d mii and the sensor has much improved low light capabilities. Canon improved noise levels between the original 7d to 7d mark ii. Making images far superior. Changing focus points is so simple with the new multi function lever on the rear I can change from single to multi point with my right thumb while shooting with my right index finger. Not to mention custom recall function...making changing light problems a thing of the past. Many other reasons why 7d mark ii is by far my choice of these two you show here.

Hi Rick, the 1DS Mark 3 ought to produce very good quality images, roughly comparable to any modern Canon full-frame body at, say iso settings up to 800, and if you get your exposure more or less correct. You can get usable images at iso settings much higher than that with that camera, for sure up to iso 2000 for print and perhaps 3200 for web use. At lower iso settings it will produce its best quality images. Autofocus is very good, quite close to the 1D Mark4 I used for this video. That camera also has an excellent viewfinder with a well-positioned 45 point AF grid, still my favourite AF grid in all my camera. Where it might feel a little dated is the low resolution of the rear LCD screen, and the lack of Auto Iso capability. For continuous shooting, it has moderate capability, but for portraits and landscapes that is usually less of a concern. The CF drive in the camera is also much faster than the SD card slot. To max out the continuous shooting capability, shoot only to a fast CF card. I cannot recall anything else to watch out for?
I know this video is old, and I love your videos, Grant Atkinson. But, you made a comment that is somewhat misleading. Somewhere around the 3:00 mark you state the only way to change the focus point on the 1D Mark IV is to go into the menu system. This statement is incorrect. Perhaps you misspoke? The 1D Mark IV has the same [AF GRID] button that can be found on just about every Canon DSLR that I have looked at. It works like any other Canon DSLR, including the 7D Mark II. Press the button, and use the joystick to select an AF point, or the “ring of fire”. You have to go into the menu system to select an AF tracking mode, which you would still have to do on the 7D Mark II. Because the 7D Mark II has “Zone AF” modes, which are available as AF point selections, you can alter the AF tracking mode without going into the menu. But, like the 1D Mark IV, you must go into the menu system to configure the AF tracking behavior of “Zone AF” modes.
Thanks for pointing that out, and you are correct, of course what I meant was that one had to go into the menu on the 1D Mark IV to change focus point groupings (aside from switching between a single point and all points) whereas on the 7D Mark 2 you can do that by pressing the dedicated control button :-)

Great video Grant. Whats your views on the 1d mark 3 as a second camera for dog sport photography along side my 750d ? Also it will be used for normal wildlife photography. The 7d mrk 2 would be a better choice but tempted by the 1d mrk 3 as the second hand price is good atm and im drawn to the higher fps. The main lens i will be using for both will be my 70-200 f2.8 is. Thanks grant.
I found the 1Dmk3 to be a very solid performer when it came to AF, both in speed and accuracy, also fps, response, minimal shutter lag, minimal viewfinder blackout..and I preferred it to the 5Dmk2 and 7D original bodies i had been using up until then. Problematic for me was the buffer used to fill very rapidly and even more so if using the SD drive, so i learned to use CF cards only in it. I found image quality excellent up to iso 800 and then still usable at iso 1600. Also with only 10 megapixels it works best if you can fill the frame and avoid cropping too much
Thats a tough question, the conventional 'best' approach would be to get L f4 glass and the older, less powerful camera body (40D). However, in recent times, some of the modern cheaper lenses have gotten better than cheap lenses used be to ten years ago. I also think that image quality from the modern cheaper lenses is also quite good if you are able to get quite close to your subject matter. The 1D Mark iii is superior to the 40D by some margin in image quality, specially if you are shooting at iso settings from 800 to iso 2000. The 1D Mark iii also has far superior AF, better response overall and battery life, and is a more exciting body to shoot with.
Appreciate all the great informational videos as I have watched a lot on teh Canon 7D Mark II but I am now lookng at teh Nikon D500 as them seem very simluar but one thing is battery life and focal points plus low light and the back dial. What is you input on the two please
From what i have experienced, the Nikon D500 can outperform the Canon 7dmk2 a little in image quality, most especially at high iso settings. That is the important differentiator for me. Obviously it is a newer camera and also costs quite a bit more, depending on where you live. AF is pretty good on the 7D Mark 2, and its battery life also so if the Nikon is better in those departments, that is good, but the 7D Mark is not bad at those things. The D500 has a deeper buffer as well for continuous shooting. Then I am not sure what you referring to with "back dial". Both are pretty good for APS-C cameras.
In my opinion it outperforms the 7d in every aspect. The biggest difference is the buffer in my opinion. The D500 has a buffer of 200 stills in raw, in contrast, the 7dm2 has a buffer of 35 stills in raw. Not even close in my opinion. Image quality, dynamic range, high iso performance etc. It is way ahead of the 7d.
I see you must purchase the hights XQD card to achieve the 200 shots per the buffer stopping I was impressed witht he video on it as well I must consider cost and how it will work for me as my wife and I will be able to swap out lenses witht he canon as of now but still may go rogue
I loved the Mark IV. And then years later I understood that the 7DII was simply a better camera for a hell of a lot less money. From DPAF and a built-in flash (plus compatibility with the newer, wireless radio-based RT system, which the Mark IV lacks) to a much more quiet shutter with all of the speed and even more pixels. Hi Jason, it can be a bit hard for me to give an opinion that is valid as I don't know which lenses etc you use nor your exact scenario but the main things that the 1D Mark 4 does better than a 5D Mark 3 would be its tough build, better buffer capacity and continuous shooting speed, and a faster shutter lag/viewfinder blackout. But on image quality, AF, and low light the 5D Mark 3 is a superior tool. Also the 5D3 and 1D Mark 4 are not massively different to configure but there are significant differences in the menu names and locations of things, but they can both operate quite similarly to one another. I bit the bullet and have just ordered one. I know it won't be quite as impressive as the new D500 but I'm invested in Canon glass and happy to make a few compromises. Should be a great companion to my 5d mkiii (7d ii for birding and 5d for macro).
Hi Jesse, all the focus points on the 1D Mark IV will work only as horizontal type sensitive with an f5.6 lens attached, though I never found this to be a drawback in use myself and did not concern myself with it very much :-). I learned from experience with the camera to trust the AF points regardless of their specification
Hi Ultarmx I never owned one but i do know them. I thought it was about the same as the 5Dmk2 (similar if not identical sensors), so I found that 22mpixel sensor gave great quality at iso up to 800. At iso 1600 some noise was present, and i tried to stay below iso 3200. However if you are not cropping much then the full frame sensor has an advantage in the 1Ds Mk3 over the smaller sensor in the 1Dmk4 and the even smaller sensor in the 7dmk2. The three cameras are roughly similar in output if equalized for viewing or printing.
Cannot recall if i covered it in the Pt 1 video, but if not, from my website comparison: Battery The 7D Mark 2 uses the LP-E6N battery, which gives me at least 1000 shots on a charge. The battery is shared by a number of other Canon dslrs, like the last two iterations of 5D, the 6D, 7D, as well as the 80D, 70D and 60D. The 1D Mark 4 uses the LP-E4 battery, which typically gives me close to 2000 shots on a single charge. The LP-E4 can also power both the 1DX bodies, as well as the 1D Mark 3 and 1DS Mark 3. I shoot raw only, turn off unnecessary processing steps in camera, and spend only a minimal amount of time looking on the back of my cameras when in the field to get those kind of numbers. For travel, the smaller size of the 7D Mark 2 batteries is a plus, as is its charger, which is very compact. The 1D Mark 4 has a double charger, which is bulky and heavy. The 7DII is a much newer camera positioned against Nikon D500. It is well known that the latter is miles ahead in every department. Again, I've seen my fellow photographers having their 7DII suddenly hung while shooting. And my known rental shop had some of their 7DIIs the main board crashed. These issues were not seen with 1DIV. This pro body is far more reliable and durable for still photography. I'm not into videos so, couldn't care less about that.

one thing you forgot was battery life

The 7D Mark 2 uses the LP-E6N battery, which gives me at least 1000 shots on a charge. The battery is shared by a number of other Canon dslrs, like the last two iterations of 5D, the 6D, 7D, as well as the 80D, 70D and 60D. The 1D Mark 4 uses the LP-E4 battery, which typically gives me close to 2000 shots on a single charge. The LP-E4 can also power both the 1DX bodies, as well as the 1D Mark 3 and 1DS Mark 3. I shoot raw only, turn off unnecessary processing steps in camera, and spend only a minimal amount of time looking on the back of my cameras when in the field to get those kind of numbers.
For travel, the smaller size of the 7D Mark 2 batteries is a plus, as is its charger, which is very compact. The 1D Mark 4 has a double charger, which is bulky and heavy. Charging time is a little longer for the 7D Mark 2 batteries, and that big charger for the 1D Mark 4 also allows for a second battery to be loaded up and charged automatically after the first one gets done.

The 7DII is a much newer camera positioned against Nikon D500. It is well known that the latter is miles ahead in every department.
Again, I've seen my fellow photographers having their 7DII suddenly hung while shooting. And my known rental shop had some of their 7DIIs the main board crashed. These issues were not seen with 1DIV. This pro body is far more reliable and durable for still photography.
I'm not into videos so, couldn't care less about that.
