I recently walked into a bike shop, near me, with over two grand in my pocket and a snotty tw*t shouted across the store with a "Can I help you!?" sounding like I was bothering him...I answered "No, I'm fine"turned around, walked out and just bought online. I don't know what happened to the humble LBS 🤷🏻♂
The shop i worked at wasnt perfect. And how we treated department store bikes were the bill would come out bigger than what is was worth. We would be honest with them. And tell them it wasnt worth it. If it was minor repairs and basic tunes we had no issues. The interactions ive had with people were mostly decent with people apreciating the honesty. Then theres the people who didnt care that the bill was bigger than the bikes worth and decided to fix it. Theres different grades of bike shop and what they try to promote themselves as. We were an inner city shop who sold lower end to mid grade bicycles. As were we had Pro shops around us who stocked the upper tier cycles. Higher end shops will be more likely to turn down department store bike repairs vs the inner city shops who deal with family bikes. I guess the analogy would be. Bringing a ford focus to a Ferrari dealer. As the only mechanic at the shop. I had issues with bikes you could clearly tell were dragged out of a dumpster and the work load and bill would be way to much. At that point we were fortunate to sell lots of used bikes, and show them the options we had. Theres alot of snobery in the cycling world. Thats for sure. And in my younger racer boy days im sure i was part of the snoby problem. As ive gotten older and can apreciate all styles of cycling. I just love seeing all bikes and people on bikes. This is why im subbed here. Your a non duchebag pro get out and ride knowmatter what you have place.
@thefreebikes4kidschannel279 being an inner city shop we had no choice but to do used because the entry level bike from the brands we carried were to much. Used was a way for us to cater to a much wider base.
Name and shame.. there attitude pongs at the end of the day work is work never push work away the work.that needed wasnt major. I do bikes for people don't charge a penny only cost of what parts are needed Great to keep bikes going and used I did work for our local council the council brought the bikes from the tips and we whould make a good bike up from parts off bikes the kids faces at Christmas was enough I did itvoluntary . They say use local one of the bike shops near me charge double for parts and there attitude stinks you can understand why there closing.all the best and great the young girl had her bike back to safe use.all the best 😊
My project is all about getting unwanted or broken bikes fixed up and off to new owners....for FREE. As you say the look on the kids faces is enough.....this kind of bike is a dream to many kids!
Couldn't agree more. So much snobbishness surrounding bikes. Surely the goal is to encourage people to ride bikes, not to put them off. Makes no sense
Exactly !

Sometimes the attitude puts you off within 5 seconds of walking in doesn't it.
Like you say....its as if you are bothering them.

Good that you had used options though.....a lot of bike shops nowadays have nothing under £600 !!
A crazy entry price for most people.
