This came out in 1986 and Dan painted this with water colors. It is a beautiful piece of work, and his inks are among my favorites. Dan, along with Terry Austin and Tom Palmer, were the first three inkers that stood out for me when I first started reading comic books. RIP DG.
I was looking at an old Frank Miller interview and was getting ready to watch this after learning Dan passed. Very influential to me. Very sad. One of the greats❤
I was able to get scans of some of these painting so we will be able to crack the code to the approach for lettering this book! stay tuned for part 2 with TONS of Dan's amazing inks over a bunch of the best pencilers in comics. It should be amazing. thanks.
Bruzenak was a Steranko assistant, so he probably knew a lot of production tricks. His lettering is so sharp here, I think it might've been done on an overlay. It's possible that the margins and borders were done on a separate sheet with lettering and laid over the painted art. Green could've had pencils, which were used to write the script and Bruzenak would've done the lettering before the painting was actually done, and the overlay would've masked any rough borders. Sounds deranged, but I think the Marvel Graphic Novels were done with blueline on the more conventional comics, so they'd be doing lettering overlays as a matter of course. Glad you made it through the crappy weather, Rich.
Sad to hear of Dan's passing. A great inker but this book was a revelation to the depth of his talent. I bought a copy of it back in 1986 & was amazed. The book is worth buying if only for the art, but the story has a subtlety to it. The Wi-Fi password in the first Doctor Strange movie was based on this title. We old readers caught that.
Great Video Rich!!...I had no idea Dan Green even did painting let alone a solo projects...I'm definitely familiar with his inking works!..enjoyed his work on alot of my Favorite Marvel titles!..Rip Dan Green🙏🏼
Thanks for making this video Rich .. .. I think I first saw Dan's inks on John Byrne's run on Iron Fist , before inking John Byrne & George Perez on Avengers .. then inking a Great run with Buscema & Silvestri on Wolverine . ( RIP Dan )
I feel like DC really gets props for for putting this kind of stuff out in the 90’s - 2000’s. I like Chris Platt Batman book he did in a similar style.
I had the honor of spending time with Dan Green before he passed away. The IDYL poster, that you mentioned, is his wife as the model. Dan was an incredible human and he touched my life forever.
Oh, man. I'm very sorry to hear of Dan's passing. He was such a major part of my youth, during the 80's especially, wherein I collected comic books during the 80's, especially Marvel and the X-MEN and I loved his work.
I just realized he passed away. I absolutely loved him as an inker, but was blown away when I picked up Doctor Strange: Into Shamballa. I've carried this all over the world with me. RIP to this great artist.
Rich by the texture this looks like linen finished Watercolor paper and yup this is all watercolors and the lettering looks to paste one. The originals on Heritage have no lettering on them.
It’s possible that’s it’s diluted oil paints. Gurney used the technique on his Dinotopeia books to emulate watercolor. Edit: I saw another comment that states it was watercolor.
Dan Green was my favorite inker of all time. His inks over Marc Silvestri on Wolverine is some of my all time favorite comic art. RIP.
My goodness. It's such pretty art.

Just looking at the reds I’d say the color is really washed out. Back then reproducing blues from paintings was tough. Never knew this existed.
Sad day! Thank you for sharing!
@richardfriend Dan used watercolors for the Shamballa book.

For my sanity I’ll think there’s some gouache finishes on these pages because if it all is watercolor that’s some real finesse technique.
Please tell me you're doing a dark Halloween episode this year!
I knew Dan and he was very proud of this novel. The paints used are watercolors. Dan Green was an amazing artist and a wonderful soul.

R IP I love his work

I wanna say this is oils, but there’s a lot in the art that keeps making me think it just might be watercolor, or some sort of mixed media…
