Born and raised here in the Denver Metro area. I’m 53 years old now, and never thought I would see the day where you could catch trout in the Platte through Denver. Cool to see!
Northside born n raised here myself at 53. Good to see a fellow 'native'. Rainbow, browns, cutties.. I caught them all in the south Platte at and below Confluence Park in my teen years during the 80's.
@ Great thing about the 80’s, no social media. A lot of spots could be kept on the lowdown. Never knew there were trout in that stretch, just huge carp.
@@Kjack2023 No other decade like the 80's, man! Thems my stomping grounds in Globeville and also Clear Creek from Denver to Idaho Springs. There's a creek that breaks off from the Platte at the Riverside Cemetery that passes UNDER Sand Creek (check that feature out on GoogleMap!) and feeds into Barr Lake. This creek helps form the many gravel ponds along that Platte stretch. I used to catch humongous carp at that creek break-off that was mere feet from the Suncor refinery. I would later train these carp in that section with dog food, no kidding. For 3 summers at least a couple times a week, I would bring dry dog food and toss into the water at a quiet spot, eventually gaining their trust and eventually being able to hand feed and even pet a few of the brave carp that got used to my presence. Ol Rubberlips, in my opinion, is the smartest freshwater fish there is! Wishing you the best Thanksgiving and Christmas season ahead, Kjack!
@@Kjack2023 Got a neat story about my favorite Platte River fish, ol rubber lips. In about the late 90's, I "trained" a family of carp in a small section of stream that shoots off from the Platte at Riverside Cemetery. Over the course of one summer, I switched from fishing for the carp there to bringing a grocery bag of dogfood to feed them. Living right nearby, I did this consistently for 3, 4 sometimes 5 days a week. By the end of the summer, they knew I was coming and would race along the river bank with me to the spot I would feed them- just under the Suncor/Denver Wastewater bridge. I gained their trust enough that I could stand in the water with them and hand feed them while they slurped the kibbles out of my loosely clenched fist I held under water- about a dozen carp at any given time. They let me pet them, and some of the bigger ones would even let me hold their bellies from underneath like I was lifting them. I did that for 2 springs and summers into fall. After that, I never purposefully angled for carp. I now wonder if that family of carp would recognize the scent of dogfood and come to it if thrown in the water? A memory to last a lifetime 🐟❤
I carry a water temperature thermometer to check the temp of the water so if its too hot you will know not to fish. I mostly fish early morning when its cool and stop around 11. Never fished the south platte, only the north platte, big T and Poudre. will need to give it a try next year.
try to fish early morning and get oof around 19-11 am, when the water is hot, otherwise the fish may not recover after the fight. Avoid fishing spawning beds as well, (all fish)... or not... just something for each sportsman to consider.
I’ve never river fish before, but I’m from up north in Platteville was wondering if there’s like certain areas where you could only fish the platte in Denver?
Honestly by the time the river gets to Adam’s county it’s mainly carp and there’s pockets of walleye I’ve only seen trout from like the skate park to meow wolf
@@99RyanFTW They'll stock trout from the skate park all the way up to Chatfield, I've caught them all along that stretch. But not much further down. Lots of carp like you said and plenty of smallmouth further down.
Honestly I always recommend just giving the river a try! I've seen fish in some weird, very urban places so truthfully always worth a cast or two to find out if you get a nice pool!
Honestly trout unlimited has been doing lots of work to cleanup and improve water quality over the last 10 years! Of course downtown you might see some crackheads but I've personally never had an issue, also people are literally swimming and tubing at the Confluence so idk haha could be worse?
@SetDahHook awh man, I'm sorry to hear that dude that definitely sucks! You'll be back soon brother🤜🤛 hate when things don't go as planned but it always works out🎣
Awesome fly fishing trip. I’d fly fish before back in Florida for bonefish and redfish. Once you catch those a little trout on a fly rod is no fun anymore lol but good job.
Man haha I bet, after fishing for bonefish on the fly you're ruined😂 I apologize I am terrible with these comments at times but I always appreciate you!!
@@fishingcolorado yeah I am ruined with fly rods, but that doesn’t mean I give a fishing all good. I enjoy your videos. Would love to get with you and do some fishing.
