It was written & recorded in 2015 when his health was at its lowest point. He was painfully thin and had suffered some psychotic episodes. Bibi was his GF at the time and he was afraid that he was going to lose his mind, and also Bibi. He had still not been diagnosed with Lyme Disease and he expected to die. He knew he needed Bibi's support as his "crutch" but at the same time he didn't want her to witness his deterioration. It is a heart-breakingly beautiful song and it amazes me that he was able to create it when he was so very ill

Bibi who was his girlfriend at the time and once he was finally diagnosed with Lyme she helped REN raise the money to come to the USA where he got his first stem cell transplant that was the first treatment that brought him back to the land of the living. He wanted her to come to the USA with him but she didn’t. While he was away for treatment their relationship began falling apart and eventually ended. This piece is very intimate and he lets us in on another terrible situation resulting from his health problems…his “Troubles”
Bibi says “I can be your crutch until we both grow old and the curtain’s closing. He hates that his illness has so weakened his body and mind that she is in his crutch. He doesn’t want that for her or their relationship. The fact that she is obviously not there at the end of the song looks like she didn’t keep her promise, but in a way I think she did. At the beginning of the song he is literally down on the floor barely able to stand/walk. He is on the verge of what he believed was him losing his mind and possibly his life. However in the end, when she is gone he is standing on his own two feet and he no longer needs a crutch.
The over arching theme is how illness, mental and or physical makes long term relationships so very difficult.
Bravo REN for having the courage to use your pain to help others heal it is a beautiful thing. He is a such a light and force for good in this world and I feel blessed to be alive to witness the artistry and magic that is REN✌🏽

It always hits hard knowing he thought this was his last song.
And it's beautiful, this and Penitence both tell the story of this relationship's beauty, love and the pain of separation for his illness and her sanity.
It's Ren singing the metal bit, he's done this style a few times in Big Push songs. The ending I think is literal she was the crutch that lifted and held him up, but they knew a split was inevitable for her health too. Love to all the carers out there, hardest job ever. ♥

Bibi was instrumental in getting his first gofundme started.
At the end of the vudeo, he is standing, even if he is alone.
This is not Ren looking back. This was right back there where he really thought he was dying and losing his mind, having psychotic episodes and too sick to be lovable.
I usually recommend this one. There are so many! Ren is 25 i think here. Ren is singing

The fingers-clawing-at-a gap-in-the-flooring-in-desperation depicted in this video refers to a significant incident on his kitchen floor which he's mentioned in at least two interviews and in the lyrics of Seven Sins: "I lay broken on the kitchen floor / I clawed at the laminate / Pain wandered my body, an uninvited guest / Bones were a home where the devil could rest / I cursed the gods, cursed my messiah, cursed my maker / I cursed all of creation / There I lay, feeble and thin /(Sick boi, sick boi, seven my sins)".
He's was about 25 here. He's said he did not think he'd reach 30. (Have you watched the 8 "Chapter" story he narrated about his early history and difficulties?)
While the description Ren wrote for this video makes it clear the song was about the pressure of his condition on his partner and their relationship, this is a work of Art so the receiver is free to come to different interpretation(s). The "empty hands", while signifying the collapse of their relationship under this pressure, could also be interpreted as the reality of his situation. That is, he was actually facing this alone, and the presence of a "crutch" was just a creation/hallucination of his tortured mind, trying to cope with it.

Same. However, it does not mean several thing cannot be true at the same time. It takes a tremendous skill to be able to write a song that is universal enough to hold a number of possible interpretations. It is something that I see time and time again while watching reactions to Ren's songs.

What always amazes me when I watch these earlier videos from Ren is just how bloody great he was, even then.
Without his illness, he'd definitely have been a completely different artist, but there's zero doubt in my mind that he would have been successful.
However , here's in interesting mental exercise for the Renegades. If you could make it that Ren was never ill, would you? Knowing that we'd never have Hi Ren and everything that's come since ? I personally think that his journey through illness has turned him into someone the world needed.
But, I still wish that he was well.

Thank you for the reaction, excited to see you cover this one! I also feel that it's a severely underrated and overlooked one. I guess the low/simple production level and being an oldie not part of recent projects might explain it. So thank you for picking it up!
@sammyd8860 already laid out the context of the song, the only thing I was not sure was whether Bibi was still Ren's gf at the time of the video. The theme is deep and revolves around Ren's deep health issues and the equilibrium between those and a loving relationship. Although I can't imagine the troubles, I also feel we can identify with it in some level, and I do.
It inspires me how well they navigated this beyond-hard situation, and the pure art they left us with like this video song.
As for the high part - I feel it's Ren through and through, but I don't have a trained ear, and it does sound like either of them! I'm basing myself on the fact that on the last part it's evidently Ren, and I don't find a transition in tone from the first part - that coupled with the insane falseto Ren has. I feel he played with it in extreme levels here also to show the lack of control he was feeling and explaining in the lyrics. So emotive, but cleansing - he seems to end up alone, but standing on his feet. We're still here to see another day, another breath, another chance.

Love your energy. Sucks when negative comments get to you, as you spoke about after coming back from a short hiatus. You're sweet, pretty inside and out, and I wish I could befriend you or someone like you in person, to geek out about musicians doing musician things. You've said you don't play guitar, but for some reason, I imagine you as a performer(I need to watch your personal stuff on your channel) being like larkin poe, southeastern blues with a mandolin, in any case just that southern bluesy, soulful rock is what imagine you thriving on. I'll have to educate myself.

The (Crutch) being referred to in this song is that loved one in your life, (GF, BF, family, friend etc.) that you can lean on during times of struggle mental/physical & how they can help you get through it all. 💔You'll still carry the fear that it'll all be too much for them in the end & you take the risk of losing them in the process. Bibi says it before the drop comes in, "I can be your crutch until we both grow old, And the curtains closing"".
FYI - Bibi was Ren's actual girlfriend during that time & this song turned out to be very prophetic, because his health issues ended up being too much of a strain on the relationship. 😥
Let me give you a solid piece of advice Lynzi. When reviewing a Ren video, ALWAYS look to see if Ren has left a message in the description or pinned in the comments, sometimes he wants to give us his thoughts on the song. If Ren writes a message it's because he's more than likely wanting to make sure his audience isn't misinterpreting the messaginging in his lyrics. I'm NOT saying you were way off the mark in your breakdown because you did fairly well, but when you read what Ren wrote the song really hits different. 😏
(THIS IS IN REN'S VERY OWN WORDS FROM THE DESCRIPTION SECTION "CRUTCH")
"This was shot with no budget at the end of a frickin ' freezing October, felt like I was going to get hypothermia lying on cold slate for a few hours, serious case of mind over matter but so happy with how it turned out :)
The song came about after a nervous breakdown following lots of visits to emergency room after some scary health problems. It's a song for anybody who has faced any kind of mental challenges, depression, anxiety, or health struggles while in a relationship and all the fears that come along for the ride with that. It is also a song for the courageous and wonderful people who support their other halves, family or friends during times of crisis :) In whatever context I hope my music can help take some of the weight from anyone suffering and help people feel less alone."
P.S - Get some new headphone luv, the singing when the electric guitar comes in is all Ren, with very little distortion & it sounds nothing like Bibi. You can say Ren is letting his inner Axl Rose free. 🤘🏾😝🤘🏾😂

The parts I omitted about the character of Walter White (Heisenberg) weren’t super important to the comparison I made, so I didn’t want to bore everyone with further elaboration. Basically, Breaking Bad is a really great show (in my opinion) about a man who is a father and a chemistry teacher who finds out he has inoperable lung cancer and he begins manufacturing drugs to save money for his family. His motivations become a bit different throughout the story. BUT, the visual that made me think of the show at all was when the fellow was very sick with cancer and he goes in collapses on the bathroom floor because he’s so weak.
