@@rootsandpeaks thanks for the video. I plan on doing some snow camping next month and the mittens are the only area I’m lacking when it comes to insulation.
I need something warmer that the cheap winter gloves that I have been using. Since I like to do overnights and will sometimes have a campfire in the winter, I was thinking of going old school. Unlined leather mitts treated with a waterproofing agent and then rag wool mitts with some glove liners. I know it will probably be heavier, but I remember that combination working great when I snowmobiled as a teen. Oh, a hack that I discovered because of the cheap gloves would often wet out, one time I tried using surgical gloves as glove liners with a pair of wet gloves. They worked great for trapping the heat from my hands and kept my hands a lot warmer than with just the gloves. Downsides was that they caused my hands to sweat and they weren't very durable - single use application.
What about ripping out the liners from the cheap mitts and using them with the decathlon liners? Best of both worlds BTW I found the decathlon silk liner gloves to be warmer than the merino liner gloves. YMMV
Totally could work, but I’d be concerned about the seams where you’d have to rip out the liner. If you were going to do that, I’d recommend cutting the liner out and leaving the seam intact (so have a little liner left). - Great option, honestly. Much cheaper, and I bet it would work.
I can see the appeal of the fliptop but they’re not for me. I want the interior of my mittens as secure as possible. I’d end up getting snow in them. I just picked up some absurdly expensive mittens from Mainers. Hoping to be able to test them in some frigid conditions at some point.
The whole time I’m thinking “just sew the thumb hole shut” and then you go and say it. Great minds. Cheers!
Haha! Thanks for watching!

Love those ideas! Thanks for sharing.

We should take a hike together, you in your sealed mittens and me in my freewheeling pop-tops. Greatest Mitten Showdown #2!
