Just wish it would have a Celestion G12M Greenback in it not 10in, could be missing it's full potential. i guess you could use it with a cab if you want. Great little Amp for the price.
I know this is an old post, but it's great that someone demo this amp who knows how to dial them in. (Which I didn't know.) Thanks so much for posting.
I will say, this is the best demo of this amp I’ve ever heard. The tones are great and I honestly didn’t expect to hear these tones 😮your great playing didn’t hurt either, thank you!!
I got this amp in the post yesterday. I have had more than a few small tube amps. This one, out of the box, is the best sounding at any volume I have heard.
Have you had a Blues Jr? Does it sound kinda "small" like a Blues jr? I want something that is about the same price/size, but want it to sound less boxy and just a bit more full, if that makes sense
This is the best review of them all. The only one that mentions the importance of saturated power amp stage, control the drive with the guitar volume, I guess it takes an Aussie to show how to play a Marshall by one fo the greatest Aussies! I was still slightly on the fence, but halfway through this and I pulled the trigger! Kerboom neighbours!
People who are complaining about the 10 inch speaker. Please plug this up to an extension cab with a 12 inch greenback. Marshall glory at its finest. 10 & a 12 is a magical combo
Thank you so much, I've wanted to hear a good demo of this amp without someone loading pedals in front of it or not showing the complete range of it. This has defiantly pushed me over the edge to get the amp. Cheers for the sensible review
This was exactly what I wanted to hear, and it verified that I made the right choice. Those are the tones I've been looking for. Thanks again for the great sounding and informative demos!
Finally, someone who knows how to do a good review on this amplifier. I own 3 tump amplifiers currently, I have owned more over the years, and this is currently my favorite Amp. I’m surprised how good it sounds for the money.

You get what the Marshall sound is all about, and as a fan of these amps since I began to play in the mid 80s, I appreciate that. I've been considering getting this amp. I love the DSL as well, but I feel they have a very un-Marshall like focus into deep metal darkness, which is not my thing. I love the classic rock tone that lets the guitar shine through in a musical way which is Marshall at its best. The Marshall sound, which the Origin represents, is very musical at its heart. It's not about covering tone with loudness, but enhancing the musicality of the guitar. This is why I've always prefered Marshalls to Boogies and whatever trend of the moment is all the rage.
I need to truly thank you sir! You’re playing and professionalism always inspires me to turn off RUclips and go play my guitar! Thank you for all the years of your amazing playing and energetic feel. You rock sir!
Are you liking it? I really wanted to like it, but comparing it side by side with new dslcr series, the DSL could get the same tones as the origin plus a better clean and obviously a massive high gain. I'm still curious though. I hear such mixed reviews and really want to give it another shot
Thanks for making time to do this, Brett. I just got the Origin 20 head, and found that dialing in a good sound was pretty counterintuitive. Tonight I got close to what I was looking for, but your video added a few tricks that’ll get me where I want to go. I’m running the head through a 1x12 cabinet fitted with a very old Rola Celestion 12” 8 ohm speaker. It’s classic Marshall all the way. Thanks again for the help!
Brett, I just want to thank you for this brilliant demo. I had been umming and aahing over buying the 20H but your video convinced me. My first valve amp! I've had it a little over a week now and I'm over the moon with it. Best of all, my neighbours are antisocial noisy people, so I can turn it up without fear :) Thanks again.
some of you complaining about the 10" speaker, but it doesn't seem to be lacking for me... another no bullshit, straight down the line video... thanks Brett (".)
Everybody is complaining about the 10” speaker...well for playing out and gigging I can see their argument. Might as well get the 50. If your playing only at home, it’s probably perfect. I think the amp sounds pretty good, as long as the gain is up a little, along with the volume. That tele sounds badass too.
about time someone did a decent demo of this amp. Always frustrates me how many amp reviews you see where they dont touch the master volume or dont touch the gain volume. Just turn the master most the way up and go through the whole band of the gain. simple
50w combo seems like it could be perfect. Enough power to do low gain cleans loud and a 12 inch speaker which you can swap with your favorite high power Marshall speaker (Cream Alnico 90 or Scumback H55 maybe). Just need a delay/reverb pedal. 2lbs lighter than a Deluxe Reverb too.
Todd: Amen to that. I have the 5 watt Origin combo and it's superb. I disconnected the internal speaker and am driving two 8 ohm 2x12's (using a 'cab merger' box to keep the impedance at 16 ohms) and the little guy sounds incredible. I'm using an open-backed Laney Cub Cab and a closed-back Randall RG212 and with an MXR Classic Overdrive feeding an MXR Distortion +, the sound is, uh, "exhilarating" (aka deafening).
@@lespauldisciple3349 It's an amp that you have to get to know. Once you do, it's fantastic. It will be very loud if you want amp gain. It's a great pedal platform, though, which is how I use it. If you have somewhere to crank it, it's glorious!

I listened to another demo on another RUclips channel on this amp and I thought that is sounded pretty thin... but this demo sounds very nice! It has that classic Marshall Plexi vibe. Thanks for an excellent demo! :)
Proper demo is right, thanks Brett! I particularly appreciate the full listing of gear used. Too many reviews don't even mention the mic, which pretty much invalidates the whole thing ...
As soon as you started smashing out those chords, I was immediately back in the London Marquee circa 1976. Balmy summer! A 10" speaker has absolutely no business sounding that good.
Well, now, this does have something of an old school sound. I think I'd prefer a 12" speaker even on a low-wattage amp but this sounds really gnarly. I like it. Great job, as usual, Brett.
I have the 20 Watt Origin head running into a 4 x 12 Marshall 1960A cabinet. No way in hell will the combo sound like this. The secret to the Love I have for this is the Boss SD 1 yellow OD pedal I have in front of the input. Wow wow Wow. Love this amp so much. Comes to life with the Volume cranked up, and gain up there too. The guitar cleans up so well by the volume pot on your guitar its like switching to another channel. ♥
Of course the 4 x 12 will give you much more volume and bottom end , But for PORTABILITY - WEIGHT reasons the 20 Combo is Awesome and definately more than Loud enough ! !
I recently learned about these. I’ve been considering jumping into a tube amp but needed to stay well under a grand. Most I’ve seen in that price range didn’t do anything my solid state Marshall doesn’t do. So far with all the reviews I’ve seen this is probably going to be what I go with. Thanks for the video.
I'm unhappy with my Fender Bassbreaker 45w, I was looking at this amp. Ultimately I'm probably going to go to a DSL. Only because of channels and reverb. Really wanted this tone though.
I just got the head here in Kiwiland for half the new price. I do not think the seller even unpacked it. Still has the tag and all the cables etc sealed in their bags. I am running it into Two Notes, so I can have the gain and master on full. I am quite impressed with the amp and that I can get this sound for so little money. I sold my Laney even though I liked its lead tone, because I just could not get a vintage tone out of it, i.e., Led Zep etc. The amp reminds me more of a 1974X than a Superlead due to the tubby-ness and almost brittle gain. I boost it with a BCC Tony Iommi Boost. That pedal gets it really singing. For something more extreme I slightly boost the TI Boost with a TS808. It gives a fatter version of that singing focused sustain you get from a cocked wah. I can almost get the amp into boosted JCM800 territory. I am surprised the low end holds up quite well and has that omph, but you have to shape the signal before it hits the amp, or you will have lots of flub. Next up is getting a Belle Epoch Deluxe and a bender style fuzz. Get my Jimmy on. P.S. I also bought a mint RG550 Genesis for a good price. I am not sure I like it yet. At first it felt like a toy guitar compared to my Gibson. But now it is getting broken in its tone is starting to come thru and I am finding myself playing stuff that i would find really hard to do on a Gibson. The really flat radius takes some getting used to. The skinny neck is not as bad as I thought though. So long playing nothing but Gibson and the Strat thing of having the volume control so close to the bridge is the thing I find hardest to deal with. I mute the high strings a lot on a Gibson, but it is really hard to do on an RG. It makes me play differently. Undecided if I will keep it, but I do need something that can do Strat like tones etc.
that´s how you do a proper demo. watch and learn, marshall. great showcase of what seems to be a much better amp than one might guess after watching some other demo videos. cheese louise. dig it.
this is my first Marshall amp ,im really happy with it . it has such a nice grit when it just starts to break up and if you put an OD in front its a power house. the three watt settings and ten inch speaker make it perfect for apartments or bedroom players.
Great demo Brett of the Origin. Most of the other videos I've watched can't seem to dial them in too well and I was starting to think they weren't a good amp, as I've been contemplating getting the 50W head. But the sounds you were getting sound typical Marshally - not unlike what I get out of my TSL
This is the best demo of the amp I've seen on Tube and I 've searched quite a lot... I am torn between Marshall DSL 5 cr and this one (they are similar in price, DSL 5 being about 50 euros cheaper).... I understand that this amp produces mild natural overdrive when cranked, and the thing I liked is that you slammed its front with a pedal ... but, would using a Tube Screamer in front if it give it more sustain?
i have some problem now ,do you buy a origin over the DSL 5CR ? i know DSL more cheaper in my country to but i want a decent classic amp sound.but iam affraid the origin its to loud in home practice
Amazing review, I've been waiting for a quality review for this as I've got my name down for the 20w head version at my local music shop. Can't wait for them to get it in now!
Hey Brett if you have time can you comment on the DI Out functionality? I currently run a Torpedo Live out of an AC30 and have the Origin 50C coming and would like to know what that output actually does. Great demo as always man - all the best.
I picked 1 of these up and it’s pretty nice. U do have to watch the low end a bit but, in a band situation, w a Nic in front of it, I think it will b Gr8. I put a Celestine gold in it today but haven’t turned it up yet. Looking forward to cranking it.
I went down to my local music shop to test drive one of these, liked it a lot. I was surprised how much low end there was, in fact more than any other 10" combo I've played through, including typical models from Fender, Laney, Vox etc. The cabinet is larger and deeper than that of most 10" combos, so I'm assuming that's the reason. I bought it on the spot, and since then I've played it at a three-hour standing-room only pub gig with a Stones cover band. As with any amp, the difference between playing an amp at home or in a studio - as in the above demo video - is night and day. By the end of the evening, I was running pretty much everything on 10 to stay in the mix. The Origin sounds really really good played like that, as it turns out. The tone (telecaster) didn't turn to mush but rather soared. No other 10" or 12" combo I've played through has survived that kind of treatment, tone-wise. A Princeton or a Deluxe, for example, completely falls apart at high volume. I was getting just about optimum string-to-string frequency response even cranked. This is another area where small combos tend to have issues. I used to own a 1959 Superlead, and very much as with that beast, the three-band eq knobs on this amp don't do a whole lot. I found I could achieve more tonal tweakage using the Tilt and Presence knobs. Great-sounding amp, and easy on the back when transporting. We'll see how it holds up to the punishing gigs I do. Once the speaker is fully broken in, I'll consider whether or not to replace it. I'll also be looking into upgrading the tubes even though I love the tone as it is so far, just because I like experimenting with different tube arrays. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this amp to any rock/blues/soul guitarist looking for a great-sounding small combo.
@neonthunderbird It was the gorgeous cleans that sold me on this amp in the first place. As mentioned above, I owned and heavily gigged a plexi (w/two 4x12 Marshall cabs) for several years and this combo has much better cleans overall. I also owned two JTM60 combos that had killer cleans but sadly that series had chronic overheating issues. The Origin sounds a lot like the JTM60 and also the much older JTM45 that Hendrix played prior to the plexi era. That's always been my favorite Marshall amp even though I never owned one. People who say the Origin sounds like a plexi probably never owned an actual plexi. This is a warmer circuit, to my ears, much more like a JTM45 or the JTM60s I owned. It's not a particularly bright amp at all, and between the Tilt, Treble and Presence controls, you have a pretty good grip on the frequency range. It has more low end than any another 10" combo I've played. Princetons have a nice low end at lower volumes but the lows tend to mush out at high volume. As the more informed Origin reviews have pointed out, the best tones whether clean or overdriven happen when you crank the master volume. IMO the best way to run this amp is with the MV close to wide open, then adjust gain and guitar volume downward as needed. I've been gigging this amp for a year now and it's held up really well. I was initially thinking of replacing the VJr with a Creamback 10 to see if that would raise overall tone quality, but I've now decided it's not necessary. This is the only amp I've bought in the last ten years that I haven't swapped out the stock speaker. I think Marshall did a great job designing this amp considering the price point and I'm really happy with it. The only issue I've had is that the gain boost knob needs to be sprayed with contact cleaner every two or three months or it develops crackly static. I suppose that's because it's a push-pull knob so dust collects underneath the knob easily.
@neonthunderbird You're welcome. I own both amps, and I play in a band that gigs 6-8 times a month so have had plenty of time to compare them. The Blues Jr doesn't really do the classic Fender tone, mainly because it's powered by a pair of EL84s. Classic Fender tone comes from 6L6s (eg Twin Reverb} or 6V6s (eg Deluxe Reverb, Princeton). The BJr sounds more like the early 18-watt Marshall 1974 (made 1965-68) or a more ballsy, less bright Vox A15, both of which use EL84s. The Marshall Origin 20C is powered by a pair of EL34s, the most classic Marshall engine. The enclosure is slightly larger than that of the Blues Jr even though the latter holds a 12" speaker while the Origin has a 10" speaker. Despite having a smaller speaker, the Origin 20C sounds bigger to me. The BJr is more boxy and constricted sounding to me, comparatively speaking. It's still a very usable amp but the Marshall has more girth and sparkle, plus with the tilt control and built in boost, more tweakability. The one advantage the BJr has over the Origin is that it has real spring reverb. With the Origin I use a Mr Black Deluxe Deluxe Plus, a pedal with excellent tremolo and reverb circuits. I've had the BJr over 10 years and have modified it with NOS Mullard tubes and a more efficient speaker (Eminence Ragin Cajun) so that it's a smooth and powerful little beast. But my Origin 20c sounds better, even stock. The 20C also has more headroom so it has brilliant cleans and takes pedals better. I hardly ever play my BJr anymore. The Origin is also a couple of pounds lighter than the BJr and usually costs less.
Que bueno que esta!!!! Zarpadisimo!!! Me encantó la demo y como lo presentó señor. El equipo suena como un verdadero marshall, y al ser de pocos watt, se puede saturar mejor. Un caño!!!!!
Awesome! Straight to the point, just like this amp basically ;) I assume the boost is fixed, cant fix the level? Anyway, Thank you Brett! (from another Brett)
I was afraid that 10 inch speaker is not enough than I went to guitar shop and try it.And I got pure Marshall sound, fat and loud and I was like wow man this is a beast but is it loud enough when whole band comes in, will it sound thin...than I disconnected 10 inch speaker and plugged this little monster into 4x12 Marshall cab..and magic happened...plenty of headroom, lot of bass, and my sound was all over the room...So I bought it...Guys for this money you get this 10 inch speaker so you could play at home, rehearsals, small clubs without mic or any other venue with mic in front...but whenever you need more sound and headroom just connect it to bigger cab and you will get miracle...for this money you get 20 w head and 10 inch speaker ;)
Apologies: I meant, "Celestion 10 inch...", not 10 Watt.

Forgiven, this time;)
Have you tried with a good OD in front? Great demo by the way.
Why a 10 inch speaker Marshall? What were you thinking??
Agreed, I don't think the 10" speaker does it justice. That's why I have the 20W head on the way. :)

Such a great amp from Marshall. Seems funny that people are skeptical about the 10". So many classic amps have used 10s.

I just made a purchase, thanks Brett. Imagine... a grab & go Plexi!!! I'm wondering if Neil Young knows about the 20's?
Man, what a great demo and now I'm getting one...I had previously counted these out. Thanks!
The same with a 12-er Celestion speaker was great.10-er speaker sounds for me a little to sparky.great amp.i like it.
Can you fit a 12" in the cab?
Great review. You make this sound fantastic. Love that you used a Tele and HH guitar.
This is much better than the Boss Nextone video, it’s defined by its clarity!! Nice 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Cheers from North Carolina, USA. Thanks for the PROPER demo. You nailed it as always! PEACE!
Would love to hear this with old school treble booster.
Exactly.
Love your videos, Brett! This is far and away the best youtube demo of this amp. Sounds incredible.
that´s how you do a proper demo. watch and learn, marshall.
great showcase of what seems to be a much better amp than one might guess after watching some other demo videos. cheese louise.
dig it.
this is my first Marshall amp ,im really happy with it . it has such a nice grit when it just starts to break up and if you put an OD in front its a power house. the three watt settings and ten inch speaker make it perfect for apartments or bedroom players.
When you write 'the proper demo' you need to deliver Jesus man you did that. Just purchased this amp so I'm super happy for your demo.
Cheers. Very encouraging! I hope you love the amp.
@@BrettKingman mate it's awesome. I've lugged a jvm 410c around for a while and it's an amazing sounding amp. But yeah these are just great.
That is an absolutely glorious tone…
Thank you for an informative clear demo of the setting.
Thanks, Baron. That means a lot to me. Cheers.
Love your demo, awesome job! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Another great review, covering all the features and a range of tones, thanks Brett!
Stellar Brent! A little verb & delay is the way I play. Thanks for adding the delay. I'll have mine Friday I went with the 20 W.
Your demos are just the best man. Tell it how it is!
Wonderful review! You helped me to make the decision to buy an Orgin 20 to replace my class 5. I freakin love it
Great demo, Brett (as usual). I've got this amp on my radar!
Best review yet on the Origin amp. Awesome job...Thanks!
Hey Brett if you have time can you comment on the DI Out functionality? I currently run a Torpedo Live out of an AC30 and have the Origin 50C coming and would like to know what that output actually does. Great demo as always man - all the best.
10" speakers always makes me nervous - what did you make of it Brett? Did you try into a 12" cabinet? Sounded great on your video.
I want to know also. want to put a 12" greenback in it if it fits
I agree,IMHO,Marshall shorted the 20 combo with the 10" speaker. All the demos so far you can kinda hear it get "flubby".
The 10” speaker is what’s keeping me from pulling the trigger on one of these.
I picked 1 of these up and it’s pretty nice. U do have to watch the low end a bit but, in a band situation, w a Nic in front of it, I think it will b Gr8. I put a Celestine gold in it today but haven’t turned it up yet. Looking forward to cranking it.
meant a mic, not a Nic...
This really is the proper demo, thank you!
Great review - this thing sounds awesome!
@neonthunderbird Thanks. I don't play it at home much except when testing out a new pedalboard setup, but it sounds pretty good at the 5w setting.
@neonthunderbird Personally I think the Origin 20c has more character and is more versatile/tweakable than the Delta King
The Origin is also a couple of pounds lighter than the BJr and usually costs less.
thanks for doing a proper demo..i dont know why it to so long for someone to crank the master
An excellent demo! Thanks!
Ace demo this is I really would like this amp in my life
Thank you Brett for that really nice demo of a low price GREAT amp ! From Canada.
Today’s episode brought to you by the number 10 and the word “grind” lol
Wow! That's the Marshall tone I want!
Que bueno que esta!!!! Zarpadisimo!!! Me encantó la demo y como lo presentó señor.
El equipo suena como un verdadero marshall, y al ser de pocos watt, se puede saturar mejor.
Un caño!!!!!
What he said!!
Awesome! Straight to the point, just like this amp basically ;)
I assume the boost is fixed, cant fix the level?
Anyway, Thank you Brett! (from another Brett)
Great review, you sound good on this amp. This is on my 'to get' list ...
