South Lombok beaches are amazing, the waterfalls of the north were beautiful, Secret Gili Islands off SW Lombok were stunning as were the Gili Islands itself. And beautiful mosques as well especially Lombok Islamic Centre in Mataram. I also stayed at Senggigi as well

Joel, it's misleading to suggest to first time travelers to go to Lombok instead of Bali because the latter has so much more to offer. Unless the person only wants a quiet beach holiday and the flying time isn't that long, even Lombok's best beaches and vintage view points are not worth flying all the ways to just that island. There is a reason why so few international tourists visiting it, retiring or relocating to Lombok as there are very few attractions and culture heritage there. In Malaysia, we have Langkawi island which is also quiet and have better beaches and even more so in Thailand and Vietnam that offer even better value for money than Lombok. Why fly to Lombok? I have only been to Lombok once, staying in Sengiggi, Lombok's Kuta and the 3 Gili islands. I won't go back as there is nothing memorable about the main island, it will be just plain boring for a second visit. If you are already in Indonesia, Lombok can be a side trip to see how different it is from Bali. In Bali, if you are looking for a quiet beach break, there are Eastern (Amed, Candidasa, Virgin Beach), Western (Balian, Medewi) and Northen (Buleleng, Lovina, Menjangan) Bali that offers not only clear sea and clean beaches, you still get wide range of comfortable hotels, variety of food options, quiet bars and plenty of sightseeing in term of temples, waterfalls, hot springs and vintage view points. You will notice drawings of living things, Francipani trees and statues of living beings are missing in Lombok hotels as they are "haram" in their religion. Yes, Bali has traffic issues and narrow roads even in rural areas. That is because many areas have been settled for hundreds of years. Do you know some of Ubud temples dated back to almost a millennium? Lombok has wide roads just like Langkawi because the beach areas were developed just decades ago. You can try venturing into the capital city Mataram and see if there is crazy traffic.
Currently the Indonesian government is promoting as a new Bali with the construction of the Mandalika circuit so that the wider community knows the island of Lombok which is has a natural beauty that is not inferior to the island of Bali
Both of the dish names you mentioned derive from the teocheow dialect in Chinese which means mixed vegetables. Both countries have most teocheow among their Chinese dialects.

Hi Dani, I can't speak for Joel, but maybe my experience can help you. We took the ferry to Lombok because we wanted to keep our scooters. It's fairly cheap but takes a loong time. We have a video about traveling from Bali to Lombok if you want to get a better impression. Have a great day :)
Of course, even gili islands look better than bali. Bali is just a hype among some youtubers and a place to open restaurants and charge exorbitant prices. The saddest part is the environment suffer a lot as you have noticed. Personally, thailand and phillippines are better if you like sun and sea. My friend visited ubud 6 times. Still good there. Probably undeveloped north part is better.
You have absolutely no idea what make millions of people visiting Bali. It is its living, breathing traditional culture amidst scenic landscape and stunning architecture and gardening, the beach is just an extra. Even long, wide, quite beach can be found in Nusa Dua and still open to public. Gili islands are 💯 for tourists only with no local residences. The sand may be whiter and the sea clearer but you get that also in Nusa Penida which is part of Bali as it should be as the culture is also hindu. I have been to 9 countries within Asean and hundred of towns, Bali is the best overall where you can get a happening place but just a few gangs/streets away, you can find typical indonesian neighbourhood with local warung and shops. Mostly importantly it does not have the boredom associated with that religion like in Malaysia and rest of Indonesia but yet not the whorishness of Thailand. You shouldn't be jealous of people who can afford luxury or have instagram look, but you can make an effort to find cheap food and hotel by some doing research. Philippines is a dump with no culture, poor accommodation standard and bad food, you only go there if you have visited other pure beach islands like Ko Lipe, Phuc Quoc, Perhentian, Komodo, etc.
Lombok = Indonesian's Phuket.... Yeahhhhh.... Damn I love Lombok Road bro.. Don't forget Visit Manado, bro, it's amazing too... The Culinary is amazing and the people are wow amazing too

You should try and check out South West Lombok. Area called Sekotong. It has amazing islands. Gili nangggu, Gili Gede, Gili Kedis.
