If you ask me he could've skipped out on explaining the ICE. Lots of explaining that would barely teach anybody anything considering how he explained it. Like how he got down to business though. Hopefully the project moves along quickly

i thought about the same thing but then i remembered that tesla used to have a problem with the batterie being mounted under the car. it would get punctured by rocks and start burning so tesla designed a puncture proof liner undet the car, that would be hard for zack to build

Another method is to put a Subaru emblem on it and do one or two sick launches from the gas station parking lot. Then all you have to do is remove the oil plug to drain both your oil and coolant!
it's kind of mind-boggling the differences between fuel-powered vehicles and EVs, including the efficiency level. i also didn't realize before watching this video that EVs do not have to shift. very cool project!
Most electric machines will have a fixed gear ratio between motor and wheels, instead of having a gear box with multiple gears. This is because electric motors have a much wider rpm range in which they can work efficiently and provide torque, compared to internal combustion engines.
This takes me back quite a bit. Was a mechanic in the Army in the late 90's and did quite a few engine replacements on Humvee's while I was in. Made me laugh when you were taking out the starter and complained about how heavy it was. Definitely my least favorite part of the job, especially putting the starter back on by yourself. Can't wait to see how this turns out in the end. Great video series.

I learn a lot of disassembling parts of the phone and now i learn a lot by disassembling parts of a (HMMWV; colloquial: Humvee) thanks to this channel👍
Just a little tip to give when planning out the battery placement. Besides taking in the weight, consider the distribution of the weight throughout the vehicle. The suspension and therefor the stiffness of the springs was optimised based on the original distribution of the weight in the vehicle. So, if you make one end lighter compared to the other end (for example by putting more batteries towards the rear), you will see a differentiation in ride height and the humvee will look like it’s either nose-diving or rubbing it’s butthole on the carpet. To prevent this, visualise and calculate where the weight originally was compared to the axles. Use this to map out where you want what percentage of the weight (and so what components) to go in your new packaging. This will give the humvee the ride it was originally designed with and will help prevent weird behaviour when cornering or at higher speeds. Also, by keeping the 4wd with the transfer case, converting the vehicle to electric won’t limit any of the capabilities the vehicle originally came with and will most likely improve it’s capabilities compared to original. Hope you get to read this as I feel this could be quite important. Good luck with the project and I’m looking forward to see the result!
Hummers, especially the military HMMWV have terrible diesel engines so a motor swap is a popular option. Electric motors can be more powerful for less weight.
@@snarkylive You aren't wrong there... for anyone wondering, the 6.2L V8 Diesel (which is one hell of a hefty unit) that a lot of these came with only made 150hp and the 6.5L Turbo only made about 190hp. Sure they made some decent torque, but it hit peek torque at 2000RPM's or less making them about as nippy as a slug. Honestly an electric conversion would sharply wake up one of these things.

Just a Quick knowitall Moment, cause im studying electric mobility. The Etron Gt and the Porsche Taycan both have 2 Gears so they are changing gear. And Opel (also known as Vauxhaul) has made a Prototype which actually has a normal 6 Speed transmission with an 136hp electric engine :D
Yeah you don’t really need gears in an electric motor. You just gotta improve the motor to handle the loads you’ll be putting on it. Just look at what Tesla did with the plaid, 1 gear that goes all the way to 200mph, motor design is important!
@@franky9928 A manual would actually be really awesome in an Electric Car, as well as more approachable for the average person. There is no idling, so no need to worry about stalling, the RPM range is huge in electric motors, so shifting is more about preference than need, and manuals tend to be more fuel efficient than automatic, so if you are going to have a transmission in an EV, manual makes the most sense.
@@undead890 except shifting, whether manual or automatic is overall less efficient. No sense in wasting efficiency because some might feel it is "more approachable". Just because we are used to one way, doesn't mean it was a good idea, just the best we had at the time.

And more fuel efficient isn't so true anymore anymore cause normally ur automatic transmission has 8 or like in the Mercedes 9 Gears or even 10 in the Ford Raptor I think and the most manual gears are probably in a 911 with 7 Gears

It's not really a proper shift though. Like, it is a gearbox, but it's clutch less and operates more like an automatic gearbox, changing to a different final drive ratio.

I used to watch a lot of Pimp my Ride and I've almost gotten through 3 seasons of Car Masters: Rust to Riches, so this type of content is really engaging for me. Keep it up, and I can't wait for the final reveal of the complete conversion and the epic drive tests.
11:30 I mean, the motor is technically the heart of the vehicle and the brain is the computer. Gas tank/battery(digestive system), exhaust -and everything related to aeration (respiratory system), wheels (limbs), oil (blood), etc.
I would recommend putting them where the gas tank is. It is designed to protect the gas tank in case of an accident or attack. The sides seem to be too vulnerable in an accident and possibly cause a fire. But IDK much about electric car batteries. Just an idea.
5:02 key difference is that coolant is waterbased and is used to keep the engine at operating temp, whereas brake fluid is hydraulic oil and CANNOT have water in it. If theres water in your brake fluid, it will boil and you’ll loose your brakes, plus corrosion.

Just fyi, your lift probably wasn't rated to lift the hummer with the engine and transmission still in it anyways. It's something to consider for safety. I laughed at your optimistic outlook on not spilling fluids 😂😅. It is not possible to remove an engine without spilling some coolant there are just too many small ports that can't be adequately drained in the vehicle. I enjoyed watching you work. The gear that connects the engine crankshaft to the torque converter is called a flexplate for automatic trans and clutch/pressure plate on a manual. I'm looking forward to seeing every part of this build! You are doing what we all wish we could!
@@Fightre_Flighte positive, automatic transmissions don't have flywheels. It's a flexplate. It's basically the same thing. And yes, a clutch and torque converter serve a similar purpose
@@rognio3 Kinda odd that it has a different name in an automatic than in a manual, though I'm not surprised. Let me guess, it's called a flex plate because it also serves to absorb the shock of changing the speed of the torque converter.
oil is actually a golden or clear color, its only black because of the carbon that its detergents are designed to absorb to clean the engine and keep it running without all of that turning to sludge and solidified carbon buildup, which can cause extra friction or straight up stop the parts from moving as far as they need to, and if its bad enough, keep the pistons from allowing the engine from turning over usually though, it will get clogged at some point and the bearings will spin and the rod connectors will wear out to the point where it wont be able to idle nearly as low as you may want it to, because otherwise, it has too much space, which reduces power, because its like trying to hit a wall, but first, you have to smack a spring attached to that wall, or another analogy, you have to shoot through a wall, that is already behind another wall
Lots of hard and physical work... Different then your usual miniature mobile parts during teardown.... Great work... Looking forward for the end result
Twin motor Humvee? Hear me out, that center channel can hold the battery packs and they can be protected by a skid plate with ventilation holes in it. The top of that channel can by modified to create an access panel if needed. Replace each diff with a motor and connect axles from wheel to motor. Humvee would be awd. Use the engine bay to channel air into to the center channel to keep the batteries cool. If each pack is slightly separated from each other even 2mm, the air can flow in-between each pack. Plus you can probably fit more batteries under there and the gas tank area. The roof is big and flat so blending in a solar panel or two plus another one on the hood can possibly charge the Humvee while it sits. Also, weight reduction could help so the motors have less to haul around like a fiberglass hood which are available in the Humvee replica market. Not sure about carbon fiber body panels but doors, hood and roof can be made lighter. Also, consider looking at kreisel electric hummer, it's the same Humvee body. Just my 2 cents.

If you *replace* each diff with a motor, how are you gonna distribute the motor's output between the wheels? You either still need the diff or you have to add a motor for each diff replaced (4 motors for no diffs, 2 motors for 2 diffs).
@@Chamieiniibet Tesla drive units have two output shaft , for reference look up Tesla drive unit cradle and compare that cradle to the Humvee one. It's very similar, I'm talking about the center cradle not the suspension arms.

This is so great! Question...aren't Tesla batteries normally housed together with a contained cooling system? Curious as to how you will keep the temps down if they are spread throughout the Hummer?
I wondered this too. There could be some natural heatsink effect with the body of the vehicle because of the spread out arrangement. Less dense cluster of the massively hot battery cells, maybe a front and rear system with separate reservoirs too???
Once they are packaged in a box useful for this layout they can all be plumbed back together for cooling. Most conversions do this and just work around how they will be laying out the packs for their vehicle.
Great video, however, your description of how a diesel engine works wasn't quite correct. Glow plugs are there to get the process started but once the engine is running they are not in use. Air in the cylinders is compressed to such an extent that it self ignites and at that moment the diesel fuel is injected. Energy that is imparted to that cylinder in turn drives the pistons in the other cylinders upwards again. "Surplus" energy is taken from the engine in mechanical rotational form from the output shaft.
Currently is not a good time for electric vehicles for an average person. There are only handful of garages who repair them for you and those repairs. And those repairs cost an arm and leg lol. Also they are a fire hazard. There is no way currently to easy douse a battery fire. Maybe in 10 years it would be good to buy one.
@@lesstoxic5619 he means like, its way easier (maybe not cheaper) to diagnose and repair an electric vehicle than it would be a normal combustion one If an injector or spark plug is broken, a broken tube with harsh oil flying out, tranny shits itself and does a free welded diff installation, thats all tiny shit the average person wouldnt know Obviously this all goes over your head because you cant look 2 inches past your own space but in the LONG TERM, yknow later on when the rest of your life is happening, electric vehicles will be far more reliable because of small little things that can break on a combustion engine Sure theres no electric garages and they overprice and shit sucks but GUESS WHAT, thats how things work ITS CALLED INFRASTRUCTURE, WE HAVE NONE, Always the same arguements too by simple minded farm folk going "oh but theres gas stations every corner and only 3 chargers in the city" like yeah you genius did you think the early settlers just got their water from the Tap and went to the grocers for food??? Best place for the batteries is the transmission tunnel, low CG and being at the centerline better weight distribution.

@@naeintebadsalt9142 They literally just put a steel plate under the cars. Adding a protective cover would be the easiest part of this build.
Just make bash plates like most 4x4 install under their cars

Top tip: next time you need to drain the coolant, remove the radiator cap and it should drain a lot faster!

Most electric machines will have a fixed gear ratio between motor and wheels, instead of having a gear box with multiple gears. This is because electric motors have a much wider rpm range in which they can work efficiently and provide torque, compared to internal combustion engines.
The model 3 for example has a roughly 9:1 fixed gear ratio
This takes me back quite a bit. Was a mechanic in the Army in the late 90's and did quite a few engine replacements on Humvee's while I was in. Made me laugh when you were taking out the starter and complained about how heavy it was. Definitely my least favorite part of the job, especially putting the starter back on by yourself. Can't wait to see how this turns out in the end. Great video series.

I learn a lot of disassembling parts of the phone and now i learn a lot by disassembling parts of a (HMMWV; colloquial: Humvee) thanks to this channel👍
Just a little tip to give when planning out the battery placement.
Besides taking in the weight, consider the distribution of the weight throughout the vehicle. The suspension and therefor the stiffness of the springs was optimised based on the original distribution of the weight in the vehicle. So, if you make one end lighter compared to the other end (for example by putting more batteries towards the rear), you will see a differentiation in ride height and the humvee will look like it’s either nose-diving or rubbing it’s butthole on the carpet.
To prevent this, visualise and calculate where the weight originally was compared to the axles. Use this to map out where you want what percentage of the weight (and so what components) to go in your new packaging. This will give the humvee the ride it was originally designed with and will help prevent weird behaviour when cornering or at higher speeds.
Also, by keeping the 4wd with the transfer case, converting the vehicle to electric won’t limit any of the capabilities the vehicle originally came with and will most likely improve it’s capabilities compared to original.

Hummers, especially the military HMMWV have terrible diesel engines so a motor swap is a popular option. Electric motors can be more powerful for less weight.
@@snarkylive You aren't wrong there... for anyone wondering, the 6.2L V8 Diesel (which is one hell of a hefty unit) that a lot of these came with only made 150hp and the 6.5L Turbo only made about 190hp. Sure they made some decent torque, but it hit peek torque at 2000RPM's or less making them about as nippy as a slug. Honestly an electric conversion would sharply wake up one of these things.

Just a Quick knowitall Moment, cause im studying electric mobility. The Etron Gt and the Porsche Taycan both have 2 Gears so they are changing gear. And Opel (also known as Vauxhaul) has made a Prototype which actually has a normal 6 Speed transmission with an 136hp electric engine :D

Yeah you don’t really need gears in an electric motor. You just gotta improve the motor to handle the loads you’ll be putting on it. Just look at what Tesla did with the plaid, 1 gear that goes all the way to 200mph, motor design is important!
@@franky9928 A manual would actually be really awesome in an Electric Car, as well as more approachable for the average person. There is no idling, so no need to worry about stalling, the RPM range is huge in electric motors, so shifting is more about preference than need, and manuals tend to be more fuel efficient than automatic, so if you are going to have a transmission in an EV, manual makes the most sense.
@@undead890 except shifting, whether manual or automatic is overall less efficient. No sense in wasting efficiency because some might feel it is "more approachable". Just because we are used to one way, doesn't mean it was a good idea, just the best we had at the time.

And more fuel efficient isn't so true anymore anymore cause normally ur automatic transmission has 8 or like in the Mercedes 9 Gears or even 10 in the Ford Raptor I think and the most manual gears are probably in a 911 with 7 Gears

It's not really a proper shift though. Like, it is a gearbox, but it's clutch less and operates more like an automatic gearbox, changing to a different final drive ratio.
Also no oil in the differential as it turns out from the video.
as an army vet i love this project. you really know what your doing. i remember how heavy some of those humvee parts are. former mechanic.
He is making a lot of money to buy all of this because of youtube, but also he is very hard working and every time is open to learn new stuff as much as possible which many of us cannot do.

I used to watch a lot of Pimp my Ride and I've almost gotten through 3 seasons of Car Masters: Rust to Riches, so this type of content is really engaging for me. Keep it up, and I can't wait for the final reveal of the complete conversion and the epic drive tests.
11:30 I mean, the motor is technically the heart of the vehicle and the brain is the computer. Gas tank/battery(digestive system), exhaust -and everything related to aeration (respiratory system), wheels (limbs), oil (blood), etc.

I would recommend putting them where the gas tank is. It is designed to protect the gas tank in case of an accident or attack. The sides seem to be too vulnerable in an accident and possibly cause a fire. But IDK much about electric car batteries. Just an idea.
5:02 key difference is that coolant is waterbased and is used to keep the engine at operating temp, whereas brake fluid is hydraulic oil and CANNOT have water in it. If theres water in your brake fluid, it will boil and you’ll loose your brakes, plus corrosion.

Just fyi, your lift probably wasn't rated to lift the hummer with the engine and transmission still in it anyways. It's something to consider for safety.
I laughed at your optimistic outlook on not spilling fluids 😂😅. It is not possible to remove an engine without spilling some coolant there are just too many small ports that can't be adequately drained in the vehicle.
I enjoyed watching you work. The gear that connects the engine crankshaft to the torque converter is called a flexplate for automatic trans and clutch/pressure plate on a manual.
I'm looking forward to seeing every part of this build! You are doing what we all wish we could!

Let me guess, it's called a flex plate because it also serves to absorb the shock of changing the speed of the torque converter.

oil is actually a golden or clear color, its only black because of the carbon that its detergents are designed to absorb to clean the engine and keep it running without all of that turning to sludge and solidified carbon buildup, which can cause extra friction or straight up stop the parts from moving as far as they need to, and if its bad enough, keep the pistons from allowing the engine from turning over
usually though, it will get clogged at some point and the bearings will spin and the rod connectors will wear out to the point where it wont be able to idle nearly as low as you may want it to, because otherwise, it has too much space, which reduces power, because its like trying to hit a wall, but first, you have to smack a spring attached to that wall, or another analogy, you have to shoot through a wall, that is already behind another wall

Twin motor Humvee? Hear me out, that center channel can hold the battery packs and they can be protected by a skid plate with ventilation holes in it. The top of that channel can by modified to create an access panel if needed. Replace each diff with a motor and connect axles from wheel to motor. Humvee would be awd. Use the engine bay to channel air into to the center channel to keep the batteries cool. If each pack is slightly separated from each other even 2mm, the air can flow in-between each pack. Plus you can probably fit more batteries under there and the gas tank area. The roof is big and flat so blending in a solar panel or two plus another one on the hood can possibly charge the Humvee while it sits. Also, weight reduction could help so the motors have less to haul around like a fiberglass hood which are available in the Humvee replica market. Not sure about carbon fiber body panels but doors, hood and roof can be made lighter. Also, consider looking at kreisel electric hummer, it's the same Humvee body. Just my 2 cents.

If you *replace* each diff with a motor, how are you gonna distribute the motor's output between the wheels? You either still need the diff or you have to add a motor for each diff replaced (4 motors for no diffs, 2 motors for 2 diffs).
@@Chamieiniibet Tesla drive units have two output shaft , for reference look up Tesla drive unit cradle and compare that cradle to the Humvee one. It's very similar, I'm talking about the center cradle not the suspension arms.

The old driveline tunnel looks like a perfect spot for batteries.
but.... he still needs to put the transfer case back to be able to awd or else he has just fwd/rwd with only one motor. so technically less and fragile space for those Tesla battery modules. interesting series indeed!
Even with the transfer I think the batteries will fit in that tunnel. Nonetheless a plate will be needed to protect them.
I had the same thought. Especially if you go with a motor per axle (or hub motors), there would be a cavernous space in there.

This is so great! Question...aren't Tesla batteries normally housed together with a contained cooling system? Curious as to how you will keep the temps down if they are spread throughout the Hummer?
I wondered this too. There could be some natural heatsink effect with the body of the vehicle because of the spread out arrangement. Less dense cluster of the massively hot battery cells, maybe a front and rear system with separate reservoirs too???
Once they are packaged in a box useful for this layout they can all be plumbed back together for cooling. Most conversions do this and just work around how they will be laying out the packs for their vehicle.

Great video, however, your description of how a diesel engine works wasn't quite correct. Glow plugs are there to get the process started but once the engine is running they are not in use. Air in the cylinders is compressed to such an extent that it self ignites and at that moment the diesel fuel is injected. Energy that is imparted to that cylinder in turn drives the pistons in the other cylinders upwards again. "Surplus" energy is taken from the engine in mechanical rotational form from the output shaft.
this is something to show to everyone complaining about EVs and how they will all break all the time and somesuch. Thanks a bunch for making this.
Well they do break so....
Currently is not a good time for electric vehicles for an average person. There are only handful of garages who repair them for you and those repairs. And those repairs cost an arm and leg lol. Also they are a fire hazard. There is no way currently to easy douse a battery fire. Maybe in 10 years it would be good to buy one.
