- always imagined myself settling down in a quiet, picturesque neighborhood-the kind with neatly trimmed lawns, white picket fences, and friendly neighbors who exchanged warm greetings in the mornings. So when I finally closed on my house in Maplewood Heights, a charming suburban community with lush greenery and winding streets, I thought I had found my sanctuary. At first, everything was perfect. I spent my mornings sipping coffee on the porch, admiring the towering oaks lining the sidewalks, and taking leisurely evening strolls where I’d wave at other homeowners tending to their gardens. My neighbors seemed pleasant, the atmosphere was serene, and I felt like I had made the best decision of my life. But what I didn’t realize was that I had unknowingly walked into the iron-fisted domain of Diane Caldwell, the Homeowners Association president who ruled the community with an almost dictatorial grip.
I first met Diane on the day I moved in. She approached me with a rehearsed smile, a clipboard in one hand and a cold, calculating gaze that made my skin prickle.“Welcome to the neighborhood!” she chirped, her voice dripping with manufactured sweetness. “I’m Diane, the HOA president. We like to keep things in order around here.”
She handed me a glossy, 50-page HOA rulebook, her manicured nails tapping on the cover.“I suggest you read this thoroughly-we have very high standards in Maplewood Heights.”Something about her demeanor unsettled me, but I chalked it up to her being overly protective of the community. Over the next few weeks, I settled in, making small adjustments to my property-planting flowers along the front walkway, repainting the mailbox, and installing a simple wooden fence in the backyard for privacy. That fence would be the beginning of my nightmare.
One afternoon, I was in my backyard when I heard the clack of high heels on pavement, followed by the distinct clearing of a throat.
turned to see Diane standing just beyond my fence, her arms crossed, lips pursed like she had just sucked on a lemon.
“This fence,” she said, gesturing with disdain, “is not HOA-approved.”
I frowned. “I checked the guidelines. It’s within regulation height, painted in an approved color, and doesn’t obstruct any sightlines.”
Diane’s expression didn’t change.
“You didn’t submit a request for modification,” she said coolly. “And that’s a violation.”
I stared at her, stunned by the absurdity of the claim.

I'm living in an HOA, but that HOA has no power to decide anything on the lots, the HOA has the obligation to do snow removal, maintaining the roads, supply drinking water, taking care of the pool area.
There are very few fences, mostly just those who have dogs have fences.
There are no way to even issue a fine, if someone does something really offensive they would have to ask the municipality to take actions, i doubt it has ever happened.
we are 192 houses and we pay the equivalent of 1090USD per year per house, water and snow removal of streets and sidewalks is included, along with road maintenance.
That doesn't sound all that bad!
