    This is executed extremely well-what an amazing video, thank you so much for sharing, and I'm glad you were able to relay the pitfalls and learnings so clearly (like upgrading from a Pi 3 to an older Dell laptop so guests didn't have to wait so long). I could see a company building out a more reliable version of this and renting it out for events, it looks great!

    MOIIIIINSN! Nice Project and what a unique wedding activity!! - We're currently developing a 3D-Photogrammetry-Scan-Rig at the University in Kaiserslautern and I see a lot of parallels to your Rig! Especially finding a proper solution for powering and triggering the Cameras (we're currently use 18 Canon 2000Ds with the prospect/aim for a number of 32 and more!). I really dig your channel and the well done content foremost your enthusiasm, storytelling and the animations! Keep it up :)

    You could also use a laser lever to line up all the camera lenses during setup, just keep the lenses cover on while you do it to not damage the optical sensors.
    To prevent guests from bumping into it, ask the venue if they have spare velvet rope to setup around the area or bring your own.

    I resonate with your concerns on USB, and potentially switching to SBCs with ethernet connections instead. I'm planning for a similar transition with one of my own projects, but that comes with it's own challenges huh! Keep up the great work!

    • @ThereOughtaBe

    • @ThereOughtaBe
      @ThereOughtaBe  Год назад +6

      Physically moving a camera actually has an advantage over a camera array: You get "correct" motion blur and I would imagine that the motion therefore looks smoother. Of course asking the wedding guests to swing a camera around their heads might cause a few other problems...

    • @uhxrjb
      @uhxrjb Год назад +1

      Swinging a video camera around might not work well with rolling shutter... even just a fast pan with most cameras makes everything look like jello. Unless that could be corrected in post too?

    • @ThereOughtaBe
      @ThereOughtaBe  Год назад +3

      Good point, that would certainly be an issue with my a6400, which has terrible rolling shutter effects. I had only read the title of that insta360 thing during some search for my project. I don't suppose it has a global shutter?

    Googles NeRF Neural Radiance Fields method should dramatically reduce the number of cameras needed to do this effect.
    You can probably get away with 4-5 cameras and still get a smooth artifact free bullet-time effect. And the exact alignment/exposure/whitebalance of cameras doesn't matter either, as long as they all capture approximately the right thing.
    Processing is very slow, so you'd still need something else for the preview. Perhaps the "Direct Voxel Grid Optimization: Super-fast Convergence for Radiance Fields Reconstruction" paper, which has published code, and can do a NeRF-like reconstruction in 8 seconds to reasonable fidelity?

    • @ThereOughtaBe
      @ThereOughtaBe  Год назад

      Hm... If I find some time, I would love to play with some of these algorithms. I mean, running the 100 clips from the wedding through NeRF is probably equivalent to paying for those 12 Canon DSLRs through my utilities bill, but this looks fascinating. Are there any examples with so few images like the 4-5 cams you mentioned? The NeRF paper as well as the Mip-NeRF 360 paper seem to be using something in the order of 10 to 50 images if I am not mistaken (just skimmed through them).

    Hi nice project, it's always fun to make something for the wedding. Could you tell me where did you get those big buttons?

    • @ThereOughtaBe
      @ThereOughtaBe  Год назад +1

      Just from amazon. In German they are called "Pilztaster" (mushroom button) or "Grobhandtaster" (coarse hand button). I think I have seen the English term "dome button" somewhere, but I don't know if that is a common name for it.

    Pardon the question. Is there a reason the software won’t trigger all the cameras via USB? Please help, about to purchase.

    • @ThereOughtaBe
      @ThereOughtaBe  Год назад +2

      If you want to trigger all cameras via USB, you need to run the gphoto2 commands in parallel like for example the configureAll or retrieveAll function in my current code. You will notice that those examples only run with four parallel commands because I had some trouble with cameras becoming unresponsive. When I tried to trigger all 12 in parallel this way, I could clearly hear that the shutters were not always in perfect sync. My impression is that this is a bit too much for the USB bus - trying to control 12 devices in real-time is not the same as achieving a high transfer rate from a USB drive and you have to keep in mind that these are cameras from 2006 with USB 2.0.
      This might work better if you implement the USB communication yourself with multiple cameras in mind and it might also depend on the hardware (USB host and hub), but you definitely want to make sure that the cameras trigger within 1/100th of a second. At least I figured for my self that 1/100th of a second is the acceptable shutter speed for people jumping and moving in front of the cameras. If they are just standing there, the cameras may be slower and less synchronized, but with 1/100th of a second I still had some jumping scenes (not shown in the video because I do not show kids and guests that I do not know personally here) with noticeable motion blur - so if they are not in sync within that 1/100th of a second, the position of someone jumping will also fluctuate visibly, which will lead to a rather jittery bullet time effect.

      @@ThereOughtaBe HI There thank you so much for your reply. I don't currently have the software, trying to price it all out and decide on a camera. It seems all the highest recommended cameras use sub 2.0. The T7, T6 T3 etc. Those come recommended by the software seller. You mention trouble triggering simultaneously and the fix being "gphoto2 commands". Are gphoto2 commands part of the software? Sorry haven't heard of that before. I will only be triggering 6 cameras in this initial set up. When you said "implement USB communication myself", What did you mean? I am under the impression you can trigger image capture from the laptop or from a wireless power point device. Sorry for all the questions. I'm a first timer with this and your video and help has been really helpful and I am grateful. Just trying to make sure I'm not buying the wrong camera for some reason.

    • @ThereOughtaBe
      @ThereOughtaBe  Год назад +1

      @@CBeyerPhotography Sorry, but I think you might be mixing something up. I do not know what "the software" is, but as you say that someone is selling it, you seem to be talking about some comercial solution. The setup I present in my video here is a DIY solution with my own Python software (see there.oughta.be/a/bullet-time-video-booth). And gphoto2 is an open source library to communicate with different cameras that I use in my project, so my answer applies to that. If a commercial software implemented its own communication for specific cameras, it might be able to consistently trigger more cameras via USB.
