I'm from England and I probably write this same thing every year when I go through old DMC sets and I'm going to write it again. Klever got shafted. This was not only the best DMC set that year, it is one of the best ever. Being innovative is great but it has to sound good. Plus One's innovations sounded more like my arsehole the day after a Vindaloo. There was a minute at the end that was amazing and a couple of 20 second stretches that were really good through the rest, probably around 2 minutes of amazingness in total. Klever easy had a good 4 minutes of solid quality and highly technical musical performance. He was a clear winner. Being innovative only matters if it is worth listening to and on those grounds Klever was the winner. I could be innovative and lie on my decks naked and scrape the needle over my pubes to makes a scratchy crackle and tap the fader a few times with my ass. Doesn't mean anyone wants to see , or hear it. Everyone has that faulty record where the needle goes off the end on to the paper and dives over so stop the fucking horrible noise asap. Plus One puts the needle on that paper and gets that horrible noise and wins with it. Not discrediting Plus One in the slightest. Absolute world class DJ, as are all the Scratch Perverts. 2001 though he shouldn't have won. Not the only robbery that year. That joke of a performance from the Perverted Allies winning the team championship was pathetic and made a mockery of the competition. The Mixologists got butt fucked out of that crown.
@@trillalvax Part of the problem is that it's nothing new. It's been around since at least the '50s, I had my little play in the'80s, but then you put it back in it's box. . . I used to obsess and study these dmc comp videos back in the day. Thinking of dusting off my hands and getting some new decks and throwing down!! Hip Hop is alive and well. Thanks Klever for the reminder!
Greatest DMC set of all time. The record selection, the scratches, the juggles, the style, the drum and bass juggle to close (45rpm too!). Flawless set. As everyone has said, absolutely mugged of the title.
To be fair at 1:18 and again at 3:00-ish he had minor flubs, nothing huge but noticeable if you have ever done battle sets. Doesn't take away from what is a brilliant set, just commenting that it isn't flawless.
The absolute best DMC set - Klever was absolutely robbed. He should of won imo. The fact they chose plus one over this is just astonishing. Klever's scratching is just so precise, not only that but its damn funky. When i first started scratching i used to study the hell outta Klever's set - trying (badly) to learn the scratches. I still listen to this set few times a year - just to remind myself how bad i am lol..... Klever and Craze - absolute GOATs. If anyone's takes the time to listen to Scratch Nerds 2 - you'll understand.....they are in a completely different league - not only in terms of technical ability but also funk and creativity.
Funny that I saw this in 2001 and keep coming back 20 years later. Didn’t watch the winner’s set twice. Says something about Klever and this insane routine.
At the time, PlusOne's set was considered next level and is the only reason I think he won. I had Klever winning that year though because he's so technically sound. Still liked PlusOne's set. Sticker juggles were actually fun to mess with.
It was a big contrast stylistically. 98 was a tidal change with Craze's composition of sets. By 2001 it was a finals without Craze and Plus One's set was using cutting edge tricks basically. Klever's set was about his power and execution and funk. To be fair, Klever's world finals set was nowhere as clean as his US finals where he absolutely ripped it up. Granted I would never have voted Plus-One I thought his set was so heavy on tricks it forgot all musicality.
It goes by seniority and the point system. Plus One had been around longer and more judges liked him plus the venue. Thats why this man was robbed. This routine is a classic. and is one that made me pick up the art. Thank you Klever.
Let me tell how it when down before Plus1 did his routine everybody ( @the DMC world champion)was telling how dope his routine was and that he was the new champion So before Plus1 did something he was already the champion . And for 3 years it was all about those two crews. And I was there and really for me Plus1 set wasn't the dopes one I was like that's it???
@@andysanger4606 No, not in this case. 2001 was a DMC embarrassment. It was a huge dint in DMC's reputation. I actually started researching other competitions because I didn't want to support them after all the bullshit that year. I'm English, so no reason for me to defend the US. What is sad is that the US and UK robbed the Mixologists, which at that point was one of the only DMC sets that was musically audible from start to finish, for that total fucking abortion of visibly unrehearsed noise from the Perverted Allies. It literally looked like a showcase saying look, do anything unmusical, annoying, stupid and weird and you'll be champion regardless. It's laughable how bad that set was. If that was a song rather than a DJ set and they went to a studio to record, the engineer would say comeback when you've rehearsed and got a clue about what you're trying to do.
Musically and rhythmically Klever’s set was better than Plus One’s, but Klever’s set ended weakly unlike Plus One who had a strong finale. 2001 set new standards all round, a great competition.
I cant believe he lost to a dude that can only do orbits and silly crabs. Plus 1 is such a boring DJ with very limited skill to talk of. Seen him live a few times. When he toured with Craze you could clear see he was way over hyped. I have a reliable source that told me that DMC UK gave the crow to Plus 1 even though he lost to DJ Woody on points. Prince still decided to crown Plus 1 champ. I watched that comp and he was not a worthy champ in my opinion.
To be honest I'm not sure this set is worthy of champion. And lets just say Plus One or Clever could never match Craze. That guy is the greatest of all time.
