This song first plays in the level Jolly Roger Bay, and then the level Dire Dire Docks later on. My best guess is that they chose DDD as the official title on the soundtrack because of the nice alliteration, and maybe because it goes well with some of the other song titles in the OST. :)
I feel such a connection to SM64; this game/soundtrack it is a meaningful part of my life. When I was just recording this on piano, I was getting feeling-flashbacks to the hours I spent pre-youtube, learning this song and trying to get it down. I would record video of myself trying to get it all in one take, and it was part of why I do what I do now. DDD was the first song I ever played in front of my friend, who encouraged me to keep going. And Dire Dire Docks was one of my first videos I posted here, too way back in the day! I had no idea what I was doing relative to now, but I was just so inspired by this song. I remember feeling like this is what I really want to do, and I still feel that way. When I play SM64, I get such a happy and nostalgic feeling (I just started a new file last week too)!
I had to relearn some of the piano from what I play by memory, and that’s because back then, I didn’t learn songs as closely, I used to just get the gist of them. So, it took some time to break old habits! I did play it my “old way” a couple times within this cover though! :)
I am grateful to Koji Kondo for giving us this song, and so many other iconic songs that we love. I’m also grateful to you for listening - thank you!

Has this song or it’s opening motif ever actually been in Super Mario Galaxy or 2? I seem to remember it being there, especially with the high echo sound on piano existing as some spacey sound from one of the games. I’ve looked but can’t find what I’m thinking of, am I just crazy? It’s been a long time since I played those games.

When the vocals kicked in a single tear rolled down my cheek, the combination of musicianship and nostalgia really moved me. This game helped me through a rough time in my childhood, when no one else was there, Mario was :)

When I was a child, about 11, one of the highlights of my day was playing Super Mario 64. It was one of the moments I was not unhappy. Its soundtrack may not be the best or most iconic of the Mario Series, but it is full of good and warm memories, and this version really makes me emotional by recalling those childhood good times. Simply beautful and moving perfomance from Michelle.
It’s soundtrack may be not the best in the series but it is far from being bad.
64 has so many iconic tracks.
And just like Odyssey has an outstanding OST nowadays I think 64s OST were outstanding for its time.

I always thought - since 1997 - the part here at 0:45 is mostly reused for the interlude in Zelda's theme. Also for part of the credits music in Star Fox 64. Same chord progression at least.

I thought about it and my best guess is that they chose DDD as the official title (even though the DDD level comes later) because of the nice alliteration, and maybe because it goes well with other level/song titles like Cool, Cool Mountain, Lethal Lava Land, Bob-omb Battlefield etc :)

Perhaps they came up with the DDD name earlier (in-theme) but decided the name worked better for the later level with the sub.

As of why I personally think they chose DDD and not JRB might lie within the fact it is submerged with Bowser in the Fire Sea and that it's a FAR less boring of an actual stage to play

People wonder why I love video games so much. At this point of my life, people ask if it's the game play, the story, the problem solving and more. To a point all true, but and it's a *BUT* of epic proportions. The music that is tops it off.
