Several years ago a large super yacht was docking in Ibiza when its controls failed. The very experienced captain decided it was better to hit (and damage) a small tourist pleasure ferry than to go bow first into solid concrete. The following day he was able to continue his charter. The fact that the yacht belonged to a Middle Eastern head of state probably helped matters.
If it can be shown that a skipper put preservation of own property over the lives of 3rd parties, then he is likely to face prosecution for reckless endangerment. You can't crash your Ferrari into a school bus because it is 'softer' than a brick wall, and get away with it.
A beautiful yacht indeed, I saw her many times at Voilles De St Tropez . There are videos of her sinking immediately afterwards, she is on her side on the bottom now...years of arguments with insurance co now for the owners I am sure.
O boato é que o dono do veleiro teve um caso com a mulher do comandante do rebocador e ele se vingou. Notar que não foi falha no comando do motor ,pois após o choque dá máquina avante normalmente!
A bad day for both. The captain of the motor as well as for big sailing yachts world. She was adorable masterpiece. I have read there was a technical problem with throttle stucked in reverse and the captain did his best to stop his vessel including anchors in water but did not help to stop it.
The fact that it manages to go forward after the hit is suspect, but anyway it is so unbelievable that pros make such a mistake manouvering in the harbour, that a tech failure has to be taken in account... if such a salvage ship had the reverse engaged at the hit, I think it could have passed easily completely the sailing boat hull reaching the concrete. I'm more of the opinion that they just, for some tech reason, weren't able to engage the forward in time... unless they had someone working with the "mouth" on them while manouvering... 😁😁
@@alienfudgepacker8317 well let's say that something about it I understand, because I'm an instructor and I teach also how to manouver a sailing boat in a marina with the engine.
@@robi5722 there is a big difference between manoeuvring sail boats with an engine and "ships" with multiple engines, shafts, generators, dynamic positioning etc. I would hazard a guess that the electro hydraulic control system for the controllable pitch propeller failed at a crucial time. These things do happen and usually at the worst possible moment. They tried to let the anchors go so the staff were aware of what was happening.
@@alienfudgepacker8317 yes, agreed, as I wrote in my first post, a tech failure has to be taken in account. Now that you say me about their anchors, it's even more believable the tech issue, because such a human error from pros it's difficult to understand... usually pro seamen on salvage ships are really pros.
I think you're right, no need to be backing up to that quay so fast and he would be looking so as not to hit the dock, disgusting if that's true really low blow
The sailing vessel is the only one in camera view moored to the quay. Yet, the motor vessel chooses to go astern at just that point, at a fair speed and accurately t-bones the sailing vessel. And how come someone happened to be filming - and it's not a wobbly "quick must get this" type of video. I don't think we know the whole story.
This unfortunately can happen with electronic controls. They sometimes hang up. Especially the wireless remotes.... Even after engine shutdown the inertia carries the vessel on an uncontrollable path. No fault of the Captain, or crew.
@@cmwolf8866 he didn't drive forward. The supply boats engines where off. The forward motion was simply a bounce back in the opposite direction. The laws of inertia....
@@jeffrichter5735 when the vessel was going astern you can see the wash from its props midships. A considerable time after contact, say 15 seconds, the vessel moves ahead and wash can be seen aft of the vessel. Not inertia in my opinion.
Eleonora, a beautiful 1910 Herreshoff replica, one of my favorite sailing vessels of all time. So sad to see. I truly hope she will be restored.

si y no están sonando el horn ni tiraron el ancla, evidentemente la persona al mando habia dejado el puente.
That Salvage ship creates it's own salvage operations...

This is a disaster. It was à beautiful boat. They should pay for that.
The captain has big responsiblity for this tragedy, he should not hands-on the boat again. He should pay or else get into prison.
he managed to go ahead AFTER he hit it...
Presumably, that sharp collision knocked some sense back into it.

No había justificación. Tuvo que pillar la baja por depresión.
