A couple weeks before my mom passed away she gave me a plant and said “Here, take this home and keep it alive. I’ve had it since you were little.” I still have it 17 yrs later but yes, it’s a lot of pressure but also neat that I still have it. It’s a palm. It was in a Pyrex dish and looked pretty sad… now it’s a giant tree.

I had a planned c section at 4pm so that morning I went to a pop up plant sale to take my mind off of the nerves. I bought a little Syngonium that I promised would be “her” plant and I would try to keep alive as long as possible. I almost killed it while caring for a newborn but I’ve since brought it back to life and it’s made it 9 months so far.

    • @ShannonRose99

I had a syngonium that I neglected over the winter and it lost every leaf, but I cut it back to just stems and put kieki cloning paste over almost every node and it’s done amazing! They are incredibly resilient if you just don’t give up on them. Good luck on your new baby and your plants. ❤

Hi Becca, my Mom planted a purple clematis vine around the light post near our driveway the day before I was born and it still grows (or outgrows) the post now. It is so beautiful…. A perennial, so it comes back year after year more beautiful than the last. 😊

I think if you do plant something, an outdoor perennial (bulbs are great), is a nice choice…. Then, you don’t have to worry about killing it.. and i totally get why you wouldn’t want to get a houseplant at the same time.

You should switch to chache pots! Especially for your maranta. You won't have to lift heavy pots off the shelf and you don't have to repot when you want to switch out pots. It'll lengthen time between watering too!

I gave away spider plant babies at my baby shower and ended up with an extra that unintentionally became my son’s baby plant! I had no plans to have a plant grow up with my baby, but they’re both 16 months now and the spider plant is ready to be repotted for the first time! I’m glad his unintentional baby plant is the easiest and most forgiving plant ever so I don’t have to stress about its care lol. I also had my son’s name picked out way before I ever even met his dad and planned for him. Props to all the dad’s that just go along with the first born’s name. They really are the MVPs

For a baby plant, maybe take a propagation of a plant you already have & like as "their" plant. Birth month it's a 1 node/leaf water prop & it grows with them.
Less pressure on care & you can track their growth together

I can't remember who but someone in one of my groups said her mother took a cutting of her grandmother's pothos when she was born and grew it out and now that she's had her own daughter, she has a cutting of her mother's plant to grow. I like the idea of that. A simple enough plant to care for but one that's shared down generations.

I RESONATE WITH THIS. We had a ficus moclame tree in our wedding ceremony, and they are so dang finicky. It is acclimated now, but when I got it home it lost every single leaf. I felt like it was a sign for our marriage. 🤣 (I also make everything way too deep.) My husband actually laughed as he overheard you talking about this!!! I am so the same. (I will say the tree is nice because it doesn’t get big too fast!!)

With a new baby on the way they decided to start another baby snake plant for when the baby is born. It’s a good plant pick for this because they are so easy! So as it gets handed down it’s pretty sure fire to keep alive 😊

Hi Becca! We received an azalea when my first was born. We dug it up and moved it with us when we moved. We lost a bunch of trees during a storm one summer and it looked like one of our trees had fallen on the shrub. I was devastated. BUT! The tree was about two inches from squishing the plant. We are so happy to have our 'Dominic Bush.'

The best type to buy as a “daughter’s plant” is a tree. Bonsai or slow growing, easy care etc. Or you can dedicate one specific type of plant so that if it does die, you can just repurchase the same plant and the symbolism remains. My favorite to purchase is the ficus elastica because of its resilience.

We moved away from that house, and I'm pretty sure one of the new owners cut one of the trees down, but they were super cool when we were growing up! We used to try to climb each of our trees and, eventually, that's how we did learn to climb them! I don't know what type of trees they were, but we called them flicker trees and other people called their seeds helicopters.

I like the idea of a plant to grow with baby girl. But I would definitely pick something easy & forgiving. Like a pothos, heartleaf philodendron or Hoya. While I see the benefit of an outdoor plant, I thought you were thinking of moving soon- I would want something to take with me. Plus with the plants above, if something happens to the plant you can always propagate a portion- much less stress!

As far as getting a plant to commemorate your daughters birth, why stop at one plant? You can start a small terrarium at for her as a newborn, and then, as she gets older, you can change to another type plant and so on and so on that way there’s no pressure.

Beautiful calathea. Speaking of names, do you think you'll name your baby after a plant theme like Ivy or Fern? I know it's probably a secret but any hints?

Why not keep the prayer plant in nursery pot and use the terracotta as a cover pot?
