It's all about the statistics - there is no fixed duration, but the longer you are exposed to radiation the more likely it is to cause damage. They don't wear the dosimeters for fun, though.. if they say get out then you get out.

People forget that it isn't a automatic death sentence standing there , you could stand there for hours without harm , someone could stand there for days and another for 20 hours and both could have different outcomes .
You see people reading it with the radiation metres and dont have kits on them , just normal clothes . Like guy isn't wearing a massive suit . It just depends how long ya want to stand there .

From how I've seen many former Soviet citizens speak, I'll bet there really were quite a few real volunteers. They understood duty back then, and from this crisis came the opportunity to truly show their love and care for their fellow people (not for the government). They're all heroes for that (again, for the people, not for the state).

I got most of my knowledge of Chernobyl from the TV series and a little bit of research I did after.
I have a question for you, if you’re willing. It’s been said that the reactors, after the incident, were retrofitted so an incident like Chernobyl could never happen again. If this is the case, how did they go about this?

I went there in Feb 2020, apparently thats about the best time to go. Its not too cold and all the trees haven't grown their leaves so you could see things much better according to the tour guide, who said in the summer lots of people are disappointed as its all overgrown with not much to see but trees.
But the tours are pretty well organised, Kyiv is a nice place to stay and get around too. The drive from Kyiv to the exclusion zone took about 1 and a half hours.
They even set us up with a meal in the power stations canteen which was a little eerie eating a meal and it dawning on you that Reactor Number 4 is about 100 yards away.
But I would highly recommend Kyiv and the tour if you get the chance. Its a really great country and great people.
