- The unemployment rate rose to 5.1 percent in the December quarter, up from 4.8 percent. The Household Labour Force Survey shows there were 32,000 fewer people in work compared to a year ago, which is the largest annual drop since 2009.
Men accounted for 85 percent of that decline, down to substantial falls in male-dominated jobs, such as technicians and tradies.
Meanwhile, the number of young people not engaged in work or study increased by 8,000 since the last update in September. As Zane Small reports, that may reflect a continued decline in hospitality jobs. | Subscribe: bit.ly/2JPg8oB

Imagine how high the unemployment rate would be if 75000 had not left for Australia
As a Master of Analytics student at AUT seeking an internship, for every internship I applied there were at least 350+ people applying for the same internship, 500+ for bigger companies or banks. If it is impossible to even get an internship, then I could imagine what's like for full-time jobs. Now I am applying for AU and Singapore... already got an interview within a week of applying
Recently applied to a low skill full time job. It had 1000 applicants through seek.
@@SgtGoodSgtDHGood But we are still bringing in hundred of thousands of people to fill jobs?
good luck to you. singapore is beautiful.
Hospitality jobs are not really good jobs
They are mostly part time.
We need good productive jobs.
Building, farming, manufacturing
And yet National let those 3 timber companies close with the loss of hundreds of jobs'
That's National for you , and they pat themselves on the back thinking they're doing a great job .
Mining.
The energy costs went too high. We pay like 45c kwh after line charges. Compare China paying 5c. We cant compete thanks to greenie power initiatives. We dont even mine coal anymore, we buy it from Indonesia.
Thanks National. I see you and your coalition mates are doing a great job offering safety nets to men who are out of work. Oh wait, everyone is going to Australia.
The economy crashed because of Labours mismanagement during the Covid period
Yea and who made the trans tasman agreement, it wasn't national
best place to go and work especially for young men and families, nz has been sinking for the last 20 years now
@@roxkrasy8791, Wtf has that got to do with kiwi's going to Australia
The county simply doesnt have the money. We have now turned into a country where we expect us to live way beyond our means. The sad thing is that Labour will most likely be few-elected, and if so, in the next 5 years our economy will be totally stuffed and boy we will be paying for it then. A bit of pain, for gain, is what we need.
I'm unemployed right now; applying for jobs day in day out. Each time I get job listing close notice from sites like Seek, I'm seeing that up to 500 applicants applied for the same job.
That's in chch. The figures I'm hearing from Auckland are in the 5000 range. It's tough out here, seeking employment, if you do actually *want* to be working.
This is what happens when your government invest in non productive industries like 3 billion dollars to property investors.
that's what a NATIONAL government did
3 billion, over 4 years... tens of billions were given away over a couple years during covid. Tell me how productive was the average citizen? 3bil is really a drop in a bucket, of which doesn't do much for landlords or the average citizen. It's just a feature from adjustment to the current system, but of course it's an easy scapegoat if you're unhappy with the current economy.
@chopsticks8204 The average citizen pays taxes. We all know that any other country in the world that landlords pay taxes except here in New Zealand. The reason landlords don't pay taxes is that our Members of parliament have highest amount of property investors in the world. This system is completely broken and is destroying New Zealand.
Thanks for not blocking comments, Upvoted for that :)
Headline from the NZ Hearld dated 11 August 2021 "Jobseekers in control as record number of jobs on offer and unemployment at all time low"
Unemployment rate under 4% . How National have stuffed it up in NZ !..
Yup. Exactly what happens every damn time National is in power
Easy to have a booming job market when government borrows money like it's going out of fashion to pump into the economy and doubles our debt, how long do you think that was sustainable, at some point we had to start paying the credit card back, that's what is happening now, we had one of the most extravagant government spending spree during covid in the world now that's coming back to bite us.
Ah, hold up, this isn't a stuff up, this is a plan.
I don't like national but it is going to take more than 1 term for them to undo the enormous damage that the Ardern government did to this country. Only time will tell.I think that the average New Zealand citizen is on a hiding to nothing either way, and if they don't stop this over the top immigration from China and India ( two of the most corrupt countries on the planet ) we are in even bigger trouble. Our people can't afford housing now so things are going to get worse with the amount of money laundering and scams that are happening here.
We brought in like 225,000 immigrants since then, dont pretend you dont notice when your out and about. This is National and Labours policies
This is how nats keep wages down, they are happy about it
Well of course , Luxon thinks everyone is bottom feeders anyway , typical National , only care about themselves .
Situation is really bad at the moment
Australia is boss, I gave myself a payrise and got outta there
If unemployment is so high, then why are we removing median wage requirements from the AEVW work visa requirements? National cares about landlords, not a sustainabke economy or the future of regular kiwis
You answered your own question.
@@flangekiwiI believe it was rhetorical
Well, I been unemployed for a year and 2 months, looking at my excel spread sheet as that is how I keep track on who I have applied for . 811 jobs I have applied still nothing.
Walking down easy street in Australia. No more worries about nothing
Damn, I am at over 400 applications and 9 months in. I get an interview a month, but so far nothing. I am a professional with 20 years of experience and an M.S. and it just doesn't matter. I have never experienced anything like it. Brutal.
I moved from Auckland to Aus 1 year ago, worked a meat packer job for $40 p/h and recently got a new job flying drones for the navy in Brisbane, which pays just over 110k AUD and honestly its a dream job. Move to Aus if you can, I would need close to a PHD to earn as much as I am in NZ with no qualifications. If you're young no reason to stay in NZ.
Wow is the NZ Media actually talking about how hard modern men have things for once. Amazing, I thought id never see the day.

@@thrasher10000 Timescale is exactly why this is relevant. National inherited a low unemployment rate, yet in a very short time, unemployment has spiked. If their policies were sound, why are we already seeing negative results? 'Understanding economics' means recognising when a government prioritises corporate profits and cuts over real people’s livelihoods.

@turtlesoul Just ignore all the spending Labour did, oh and the lockdowns that ruined the economy
People need to blame National and Labour at the same time. They have both done absolutely nothing
I own a Landscaping/Garden maintenance Buisiness, alot of the time I work with a team of two or three and sometimes alone. The cost to maintain the buisiness takes almost all the gross profits, then basic costs like rent, groceries and fuel leave me with almost nothing, just enough to re-invest into the buisiness. I cannot dream of owning a home before I am 45 -50 and mortgage free by 75, I am currently 33. It is so hard working harder each day for less, paying more and more tax progressivly as my buisiness grew only to be left with less and less and less. Now I try not to push my body beyond its limits to get the job done anymore. I toss and turn if im doing the right thing even though im workiing so hard each day. What am I supposed to look foward to in this country? I want a Home, I want a family and I want to be able to afford those two things more than anything else in the world and I am damn well trying my best

We should be building our own infrastructure. Not contractors.
Great wages get cut or should I say get a lower increase so they are not keeping up with inflation. But the banks interest rate goes down so the banks can essentially print more money and allow people to borrow more sounds like a great idea.
Probably doesnt help with the brain drain and the NZ trained and qualified workers going over the ditch. Its a point where, for a person like me in mid my 20's with a stem degree, the same role across the ditch in the same company I work for is rough approx +60% pay difference.
Australia is boss , I gave myself a payrise by getting on the plane outta nz .
But a) how does that affect unemployment, if anything it should reduce it in NZ and b) if you are in mid 20s, why wouldn't you go get that 60% pay rise? I am 50, also with a tech role, if there was as much as 60% pay rise, heck i would be out of here in a heart bit😂

It’s only going to get worse cause our big companies ie banks are looking to move jobs offshore to India and the Philippines. These are the banks that posted massive profits last year. . And this is all approved by the RBNZ
Need to bring more awareness to being a tradesman
Too many young guys in uni studying communication and psychology when they should be plumbers and electricians
Women outnumber men by about 3:1 in those degrees so your point is false.
During downturns less companies are willing to hire apprentices as they themselves are uncertain of work.
I came back from the UK in 2008 (GFC) after 2 years experience working in an electrical field plus completed a City and Guilds electrical course and struggled to get an apprenticeship here even with good interviews and work experience due to the above reason. Now will be a very difficult time for those looking for one
Bottomline is that the majority of young people do not actually wanna do anything, let alone do labor work. They mostly just wanna be glued to phone and pc screens
$2.9 billion to landlords & slashing Brightline tax period from 10 years to 2, costing the govt $1 billion in lost tax revenue. And who benefits the most from this? Property investors-like our very own millionaire Chris Luxon. Conflict of interest much? It’s almost like the rules are being rewritten with landlords, and maybe a certain PM, in mind.
- $56 million, part of a broader $153 million for charter schools? Do we really need schools with the freedom to spend our tax dollars however they see fit? Seems like a blank check for admins while public schools are left counting pennies. Average salary for the Charter school agency is $159k which is 50% higher than the average salary in public service.
- $216 million to the tobacco industry? Why does a billion-dollar industry need a handout from our tax dollars? They’ve been rolling in profits for decades-shouldn’t they be coughing up instead of us?
- $1.77 billion for Pharmac “to ensure access to essential medicines”? Sure, because nothing screams “help” like a billion-dollar corporation needing taxpayer cash to dish out meds. It’s like they’re holding onto the drugs, waiting for the government to pony up. Come on, do they really need our tax dollars to get their products moving?
Meanwhile, public service jobs are being slashed-what’s the count now? Over 9250 jobs gone as of Dec 2024. Wouldn’t it make more sense to keep these people employed? And let’s talk about the Dunedin hospital-how is there no money for a much-needed upgrade, yet the government can find an extra $800,000 for landlords in the 2024 budget? Priorities seem a bit off when the health of a city takes a back seat to property investors.
Oh, just a casual $38 billion in borrowing from this govt to keep the 2024 budget afloat. Because why not? What’s a little more debt when you’ve already committed to a cool $164 billion over the next five years? Surely, we’ll figure out how to pay it all back later. No rush!
Ah yes, the National government’s brilliant money-saving move-canceling the ferry replacement project at the low, low cost of up to $1 billion (including $500 million already spent and $300-$500 million in cancellation fees). And what’s the grand plan? A “more cost-effective” replacement strategy, with two new ferries arriving in 2029-a whole five years from now. Meanwhile, the current Interislander fleet, with some ships already over 30 years old, will be limping along well past their retirement age. But hey, what’s a few more breakdowns and service disruptions when you can proudly say you “saved money,” right?
One-term government, my fellow kiwis! Let’s show them the door next election. They’ve got their priorities clear: corporates, themselves, and their wealthy buddies. Time to vote them out and bring in a government that actually cares about Kiwis!
