I think Encre Noire shines in the drydown. It is insanely bitter and dry, super woody, so people wouldn't gravitate towards it... But its musky, woody drydown is really something I love, even though it's not a strong fragrance. I usually wear it during rainy fall days, because it reminds me of fallen leaves. Thanks for the review.

The drydown for the Lalique is definitely a highlight, the wood notes are delicate, rooty and herbaceous. I like it!

I really enjoy this comparison videos. I also have a lot of difficulties with vetiver and the only one I enjoy wearing is AEON by Bogue (discontinued now, it was a limited release). Racine Caree by Lebreton is also interesting. Masque Milano never impressed me. Montecristo now is not what it used to be, it is tamed down with respect to the version I tried in 2016. I liked it, but I ended up buying Hard Leather by Mazzone because it was more polished, refined (I have to admit a comparison is not fair as they develop in different direction. Keep up your good work, Daniel.

I’m new to your channel and I thoroughly enjoy your content. I blind bought Encre Noire several years ago solely due to price and hype. I’m familiar with other Lalique fragrances so what go wrong? Surprise, Encre Noire was big no for me. It was too dark, bitter and musty smelling. I could not see myself enjoying or wearing it. It smelled like clothing stored in a cedar chest. I gave this away.
Fast forward to last year, I blind bought Hemingway as I’m a fan of Masque Milano’s fragrances…. I was fooled again. It reminded me of an old dusty cabin; smutty fireplace, old sofa, dust in the air, moisture in the air. There is also a tinge of a dark liquor in the air? The art of it is the photorealistic capture of a place, maybe Hemingway’s home, is captured here. This isn’t something I could wear confidently.

Encre noire's popularity definitely benefits a lot from its price, but I still think it's a pretty solid vetiver. I prefer the sport version only because I use it whenever I don't feel like wearing something potent, but the og encre noire is also great. It smells like a forest and I really love the vibe I get whenever I wear it. My only issue with it is it's probably not as strong as I wanted it to be. The extreme version is also nice and a lot more unique imo. Love your insight on this.

Encre Noire! This reminds me that i was interested in honing into what fragrances can help fit into certain 'aesthetics,' regardless of particular notes or overall structure of the perfume. Instead more like, if you saw someone walking down the sidewalk and based on their outfit and vibe they give off, what scent you would think would match or compliment them.
And so, i noticed Encre Noire has been making waves in the alternative/goth communities, so I started thinking of what would fit for that.and i think the dry, bitter, and woody type nature of it, along with its classic or semi 'vintage' age of it contributes to the perception of the aesthetic.
However even for that aesthetic i still agree with you that it isnt my FIRST choice for the vetiver and herbal approach. I still love anise, licorice, and wormwood/absinthe notes and i think those work a ton in that space, so i focus on the herbs, leaves, and maybe florals: les liquides imaginaires' beaute du diable is amazing on that front imo with a soft spice interplaying with liquor snd floral vibes, stora skuggan hexensalbe is a very bittersweet licorice and herbal concoction, and kilian's l'heure (or fievre depending on batch) verte is a sweeter more refined version of that black licorice + wormwood front. Reminds me of ouzo more than absinthe honestly, lol.
I also find that the content creators on tiktok that suggest encre noire for the aesthetic also enjoy some smoky and floral things, so some feminine amouages like memoir woman fit in there too. I find interlude black iris' alternative opening with the violet, orris, and sweeter smoothness also helps fit in the aesthetic as well. Memoir man too of course, though ive said earlier that it feels more like an edgy approach to a refined fougere, lol.
I think the aesthetic matching is fun to think about and brainstorm, so thanks for helping to remind me and kickstart me to do one on the spot 😂 maybe theres some other ones for you that can be interesting for a video idea, as long as it isn't the played out "suit and tie" "office casual" type things, haha

I have similar feelings about vetiver as a whole. I like it but it just doesn’t feel special enough in most cases. And I love a couple of vetiver focused scents but I just can’t justify spending Frederic Malle prices for something light green and woody like Vetiver extraordinaire or even Bal Eafrique.

Great, I can tell perfume stories. 😊
Encre Noire translate to something like "dark ink". Dark ink brings associations with books. It's a minimalistic masterpiece. It's much beloved by readers who get the library association. It's simplicity also makes it great to wear while reading. Especially after a shower before bed. This is routine for many avid readers. This composition does so well on my skin when activated by heat and perspiration. I sweat at night and 5 sprays under my shirt smells musky and great in the morning.
Now Hemingway is know for being an avid reader. Also know for his short sentence word structuring.
I haven't read too much Hemingway. I liked him in high-school through mandatory reading. I can recommend "The Effect of Gamma-rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds" it's a quick read and Hemingways only stag play. Captures "irony" very well. And us readers know that irony is so difficult to really capture and display

Perhaps Hemingway was known to wear Vetiver? Just a guess…
I was also disappointed with mask Milano… I bought Mandala for a very good price, but unfortunately I seem to be anosmic to something in the fragrance. That is, the scent was extremely light, ozonic and almost nonexistent to my nose. Although this isn’t the fault of the perfume per se,as the people around me could smell it. I really love the quality and design of the bottles though, and so would love to find something from the line to add to the collection. I am also interested in Monte Cristo so I would love to see your review that next!

The homage could as well be for a paddle board… The only reference Google gives is this interpretation of a perfume shop copywriter: “exactly like the prose of Hemingway - where short sentences, straight to the point, were actually pointing at a very deep meaning - the perfumery style of this homage to Hemingway is minimalist in the notes yet very complex in the evolution, particularly on the skin.”

I always thought that Encre Noire smelled like a grey turtleneck at a funeral, but now it's more of a tombstone in a misty cemetery. 😆 Chalk it off to Halloween approaching I guess. Big fan of the Sport flanker since it uses a nostalgic grapefruit-calone accord from the 90s. That's really the only addition to the original. But it's a 50:50 ratio with the vetiver base so it balances out. Hemingway rather overpriced imo.
