    Rust converter applied and finally primed and painted the frame. Took forever because the weather would not cooperate! Sunshine during the week while I'm at work, them rain every weekend for months on end.

    hey do what you can with what you know and with the money you have. me and my friend both had 66 F100 short bed 352 3 speed on the floor. not to much rust. not really bad trucks. but I spent everything I had and did 99% of the work myself even the paint job. and had maybe $2500 in it. but he has money and spent over $20 on his. and he sold his for 27K I was down there in my truck as he was selling his and the guy that came with the guy to buy his bought mine for 19k. and mine had a/c. so just because you send a lot of money getting stuff done don't mean its going to bring you more money.

    Corroseal is the way to go for rust conversion IMO. And at $48 a gallon Prime, it's cheaper too. Plus it is an etching primer/sealer, so you can paint right over it without any prep, and water based so no problem with brush cleaning (your hands are another story, it sticks to them for days). But it looks perfect on a frame as is. Looks factory new. I've experimented with leftover on scrap metal laying around, and this stuff is awesome.

    • @troysgarage
      @troysgarage  4 года назад

      I’ll have to give Corroseal a try on my next project. Thanks for the tip. 🙌🏼

    • @MrLegendL2118
      @MrLegendL2118 4 года назад

      I agree, I 1st tried corroseal to see how long it would last by itself by 1st wire brushing it then degreasing an cleaning the whole underside of my 4" lifted E350 4X4. It lasted for about 3-4 years before little tiny bits started to come through & I could of just left it, but this time I just cleaned the underside and reapplied the corroseal & it went a lot smoother not soaking up as much. Then I applied Rustoleum Professional High Performance Enamel in Gloss black #7779 with a brush for $30 a gallon, and I used half of it(I still have do do my F350 dually). I rolled around on my creeper for a about 4 hours getting everything, from inside and outside the C channel frame, rear end, front end(4x4), steering stabilizers, rear leaf springs, cross bracing frame brackets, steering knuckles, took spare dire down etc...and it looks waaay better than brand new. I was told from a body shop guy to use the Rustoleum cause all the garbage "undercoating" just peels, which I see all over on my 06 F350 dually. The Corroseal with also change different colors also it it wasn't prep right, grey if it need more, brown streaks if the metal was wet, and speckled discoloration bc of mineral salts and other chemicals, in other words you didn't clean it right haha.

    Naval jelly is a pretty good substance to fight rust. Brush it on and remove with water within 15 minutes. It provides a protective coat for the paint to adhere to. It encapsulates the any left over rust that you missed. Pretty good stuff to use.

    Doing it within your budget is great and its how I approach my builds. I use the same methods as you but it doesn't cost any extra to strip it down further and do it complete one time rather than having to revisit it. Thats my only criticism is a few shortcuts were taken that would have only cost you time not money.

I used rust converter (phosphoric Acid) let dry 24 hours. i then painted with rustoleum spray paint. I did not do as good job as the video. It has lasted 20 years now living in salty air near the beach and the paint looks as good as day i put it on with zero return of the rust anywhere. The places where the rust had eaten holes in the metal before I did the rust treatment and paint did not reform rust either.

    Nice work, I loved what you did right up until the "GLOSS" black.. In my humble opinion, never use gloss black on anything that isn't 150% block sanded perfectly flat, otherwise it highlights every single problem and looks like a pile of melted crap. If you sprayed that with a "matte" black it would have looked much better and hid that pitting much better. Just my advice, love the project wanna do my own similar project on a bricknose F-150!

      yeah, that's probably true, it does light up every bump and imperfection. Oh well, this is a learning experience. I'll be starting on my next project and use what I've learned on it soon. Picked up a 66 F250, I've dubbed "Wallace the 66", named after the original owner. Follow #wallacethe66 to see that project once I get started on it this summer.

    how has the paint been holding up?

    • @troysgarage
      @troysgarage  4 года назад

      We keep the truck under a car cover when we aren’t working on it or driving it. So far the paint is holding up great. No rust breaking through anywhere I’ve seen.

    Where's the boy? Thought this was a father & son project. Looks like father is doing all the work.

      The boy is out service as a Full Time Missionary for our church. He’s headed from North Carolina back to Santiago Chile. He’ll be home and working on the truck again in September 2021! Miss him but love what he’s doing! 🙌🏼

      Working a couple evenings and then 2 Saturdays. So I guess it took 2 weeks. But total hours was probably like 12 or so.

    How come your doing all the work??? If the kid don't have hard work into it he won't appreciate the truck or the grueling work it takes

    • @troysgarage
      @troysgarage  3 года назад

      You have to remember that I used to own this truck too. I'm a little more invested than he is, it's true. However I've told him several times, and he knows, that I get first right of refusal if/when he ever decides to sell the truck. Essentially it's in his name, but it's MINE!!!! hahaha

    I’m dumb but what about the front of the frame?

    • @troysgarage
      @troysgarage  4 года назад

      You aren’t dumb for asking. We are hoping to get to that at some future point. We don’t have the space or the time/money for a complete frame off restoration. We are doing the best we can with the budget and space we have available.

    Them wire brushes are brutally dangerous lol.

      You aren’t kidding! I didn’t show it on camera, but I had little metal spikes sticking through my pants into my legs. One hit my face but didn’t stick me. A face shield would be a good thing to wear when doing this! Glasses and gloves are a minimum for sure! 😱

    • @troysgarage
      @troysgarage  Год назад

      I hear ya! We are doing what we can with the resources we have. No space for a total frame off so we are treating what we can as we get to it. More details in the next episodes. Hope you follow along the whole process. It’s been slow but rewarding.

    Too bad you didn’t have a portable sand blaster to do it instead of a wire wheel.

      Work with what ya got right right? It’s still looking great today. May have some rust to deal with again at some point. But for now I’m still happy with it.
