I'm still trying to get the pop up on my longboard, hoping bosu ball training will aid me in my quest as Im no wear near the ocean and its a good 10 hours to get to the nearest one to go surf. I'm also 315 lbs, 37 years old and have a bad left ankle but my heart mind and soul are committed to surfing, already had my first big fail as I tried to tackle a 7 foot wave got 92% of my pop up and the board nose dived on me and I did a double flip and my chin got rashed by the sand under the water.
Hey, James yer the pop up takes time, how did you get on? sounds like you had a hardy first experience with the waves, with time it will come just keep practising on land and in the water. nothing quite like practising in the water though. possibly start in smaller waves and you might have more luck

Yet another video by a surfer who thinks he understands Kinesiology. In no way , shape or form does "STATIC" balance practice translate to "Dynamic" balance mastery. In fact, unstable surface training originated in the Physical Therapy world to help injured patients re-gain nervous system function, not performance, AFTER INJURY. Here's a quote from an article put out in the Harvard Medical Journal that explains it a little deeper. "The muscle activation required for a given movement depends on the environment. For example, producing a swimming motion on the pool deck is not the same as doing it in the water, and picking up a glass of juice requires a different motion when your arm is weighed down by a heavy bag. . Individuals learn to accommodate varying physical dynamics, making errors when encountering new situations, but quickly improving with practice. The brain builds internal models of these dynamics, producing patterns of muscle activation that account for external conditions". By training like this on dry land, you are actually training your body to react completely different than it would when in motion. Want to really get good at surfing? Stick to doing the small things well rather than the complicated things poorly.
Hello "diabolical", So what would you recommend ? "By training like this on dry land, you are actually training your body to react completely different than it would when in motion." are you saying that there are no exercise to train surfing outside of the water ? Isn't balance something that could be perceived as general ? the more you learn about balance outside of the water, the easier it will get for you in the water ?
@@bennigouls I would recommend the book "movement" by Grey Cook. No, Balance isn't perceived as "general". You have "Static" balance (standing still) and "Dynamic" balance (in motion). Few people are good at both.
@@diabolical1976 This is not what I meant. I was asking you , regarding your previous comment that is clearly criticising the video and saying that the different exercise have no use ? (Or maybe I did get your message right). So I was just wondering why training on a Bosu ball for dynamic stability couldn't help for surf ? Thanks for the book
@@diabolical1976 I disagree. Many surfers also do yoga and are plenty good at both. And while yes--surfing is the best way to get better at surfing--there's not a pro on tour who isn't doing similar exercises to ones shown in this video. Also, do try and mellow out...you come across as a bitter know-it-all.
