- Shawn Kemp, known as the “Reign Man,” was an electrifying force on the basketball court.
Anyone who witnessed Shawn Kemp on TV, or if you were fortunate enough to watch him play live, you just had to tell a friend about what you saw the night before! His athleticism was unreal and his love for the nuances of the game was infectious.
Shawn Kemp was on par (or close, all due respect) with prime LeBron James as a big man athlete. For a man of his size (6'10"), his agility and speed were unparalleled. Kemp played with a raw emotion that was palpable. His dunks were a combination of raw power and finesse, often leaving defenders and rims in his wake.
Kemp once said, "Sometimes I don’t realize the things I do on the court", reflecting his instinctive style of play. He also stated, "I get excited after I dunk. I yell and scream, but it’s not yelling and screaming at other players to show them up. It’s the way I play. What I do is have fun on the court". This quote encapsulates Kemp’s love for the game and his competitive spirit.
Despite his achievements on the court, Kemp remained humble. He once said, "I am not a savior", reflecting his team-oriented mindset. Shawn Kemp was a team-oriented player, who didn’t often put up a high volume of shots. He found his attempts within the flow of the offense. In the modern day NBA, had Kemp opted for a more ball-dominant style like we see in today’s game, he could have racked up Triple Double type stats at will. Kemp had the ability to do it all! He too, could have made an early career transition to ball handling, like Giannis, but what sense would that have made when Gary Payton's your teammate? But he certainly COULD have.
Kemp’s career peaked in 1995-96 when he and Gary Payton led the Seattle SuperSonics to a franchise-record 64 wins and their first NBA Finals appearance since 1979.
On the defensive side, Kemp was all in, always there to hype up his squad, and never failed to put on a show for the fans with his athletic skills. One of the most talented bigs in NBA history, and would have been a champion if it weren't for Michael Jordan & the Bulls.

Kemp was a beast!
Imagine had the SuperSonics gave Kemp the money they'd given to McIlvaine they might've been contending up to early 2000s.
That bad McIlvaine deal cost them their future and eventually their stay at Seattle.
