Four sarcophagi, and four columns, but the columns are not portraits, because they all look the same. Would you not have had more fun doing individual portraits? That's an advantage of carving over moulding - each piece of a set can be individual. Also, if the scenario led the PCs to be looking for the pillar of Haldruin the One-Eyed, then there could be more potential there. Good stuff, though. Tempted to have a go. The carving gloves look awkward to me. Perhaps they could make them to cover just the highest-at-risk bits of your hands.
oh wow! Thanks for the comment Lindy :D .. Thats a good point actually! I guess I was keeping it as simple as possible just to show the techniques... the attached tutorial is for this specific face shape. You should definitely give it a go. To be honest I never really wear the gloves, but with youtube I often get comments from 'Health and safety" / "PPE" nerds. So just demonstrating it for people not used to handling knives. Thanks again for watching and the comment ;)
Oh a Lindybeige and Nat 1 Videos collab is a priority would be great!
There hasn't been that much of a dwarven massacre since Smaug! 😂 Fantastic as always! These look amazing 🙂
haha comment of the day! Thanks mate ;)

Below...am I doing this right? Those are awesome, you've got some legit carving skills!
haha yes you are! Entered ;) And thanks for watching :D
Those pillars are so impressive! It's amazing what you can do with foam, such a versatile material.
Thanks! Yep, XPS foam is great! Such a useful material :D
I just started getting into painting miniatures and I’m thinking about trying my hand at DnD as well. I love your tutorials because they are great starting points to show it is possible and it doesn’t have to be super extravagant or complex to look good.
Thank you ! yeah exactly, you can make some pretty cool stuff with a few simple techniques... and most of all it's fun to do also :D
Loved having your kiddo in this one. So sweet!!! Very cool project!
Thank you! haha she is trying hard to sneak in to my videos...
Love the dwarven commentary! 😂 Baruk Khazâd!
Glad you enjoyed!
I don't think I've enjoyed a build video this much in a very long time! The commentary from the dwarves, the great techniques, and a wonderful giveaway all made for an awesome experience.
Awesome! So glad you enjoyed it :D
A lovely hidden gem of a channel that I’m glad I unearthed ☺️
Always learning neat little tips and tricks.
Thank you so much :D
Found my way here from the guild on facebook. Wicked cool stuff, new subscriber here.
Also, the bit with your kid was the most ADORABLE THING EVER.
Thank you! A fellow guild member, nice :D haha thanks, she is my little apprentice :D
Thank you for sharing you skills & Knowledge. Excellent work! I'm new to this hobby, but I will definitely try making Drwaven ruins.👍
Thank you! I am just so glad people find the information helpful :D
Great video mate... awesome work on the dwarfish collumns. I particularly liked your knife support commentator.
haha Thanks :D
Please tell us where you get your XPS foam blocks from. We can't find where to get it!
It is hard to source it some times... honest answer is I got a friend in Germany to send me a box. There is green stuff you can get in the UK called Styrodur and it is great! But... you might only be able to buy it in bulk. Search for underfloor insulation sheets in the UK and then check that it is XPS foam ;)
What a fantastic video! I start learning the Proxxon hot wire cutter and know how to use a retractable blade but CARVING xps foam?! Woah, why didn't I think of that. Thank you!
Awesome, thank you! Glad it was helpful :D
Carving XPS with a carving knife is a great idea!
I love it !!
Especially your longer viedeos inspire me to try some new projects with my fishtanks
If I get to it I'l make some pictures and send them on Instagram
Maybe they will also inspire you for new projects
Nice work, both on the carving and the video! Speaking as somebody permanently scarred from a model knife mishap 35 years ago: always use carving gloves! :-D
Thanks! Yeah, the knives are sharp... this is great advice!
Tossing my hat into the ring for the giveaway - my husband and sons just watched this video together and it seems to have ignited a new passion (“This is like an elven Stonehenge. What is that troll accent? Can we watch Lord of the Rings or is it too scary?”). I like to imagine how much they’d appreciate a win from the best wife and mom ever.
haha thats cool! Well you are in the running now. Fingers crossed eh :)
Hi Erica! Soooo you won the draw for the wood carving knives! It will be announced in my video coming out today (Sunday) But I thought I'd contact you here incase you don't see the video today. Can you find me on instagram and send me a message please? I will need a postal address. Congratulations :D
@@Nat1videos Amazing!! Thank you so much. :)
Great video! Inspirational! Particularly love the tomb setup! I think they had menhirs in Asterix?!
I think so! Yes, Obelix !! He is always carrying one on his back haha
Hey, that's a great idea, using the wood carving knives on foam. Probably easier than the Olfa for detail work. Nice job!
Yes! Its a much sturdier blade, takes a lot longer to dull the blade and the blade is also a bit longer... also the shape of the handle is really nice to hold in various positions , so very useful for this kind of thing :D
Just stumbled across your channel.
So good to find new inspiration for xps foam works
Shout out from outback Australia!!
If I win, I'm definitely trying my hand at those giant statues.
Amazing! Thank you. Fingers crossed eh ;)
I'm not scottish. I'm not dwarvish. But somehow I felt offended!
I guess because I still have a lot of not painted XPS stuff and kinda wanna try this now but shouldn't..
haha sorry about that... Why shouldn't you though? lol
Sounds like a proper and precious assistant you have there, buddy....thanks for the vid...really nice results....Jim
Thanks Jim! Yeah she's great. This was a good activity for her to help with ... randomness is good for this kind of thing :)
fab video as always, I think your dwarven lord should be called "Frank" Why I don't know just sounds cool LOL
haha thanks! I like that, lets go with Frank lol
Why did you not carve the four pillars to be noticeably different? Then they could've represented the four buried kings. Otherwise - fantastic looking set!
Thanks so much! That would have been a really cool idea actually! Not sure why I didn't think to do that... I will in future for sure! I have carved this set for people a few times :D
I watched the start of this and was going 'ooo blocks of XPS foam!' - it's worrying that I'm so excited of blocks of foam! I bought a hot knife after watching your last video, I haven't got round to using it yet, but it's on the list - the ever growing list of projects!
Oh and a Discord request from me too, please 😊
Nic
Thats super cool! Sure thing, here is a link for Discord ;) discord.gg/Mh9EBRBf
Instructions unclear: I now have a sentient army of dwarven pillars trying to kill me. I've locked myself in a cupboard, but it's only a matter of time before they get me... Wait, I think they're gone... I'm gonna ope
hahaha can you get to the carving knife...?
Oooohhhh! I’d love to try my hand at carving some Dwarven pillars, and that prize pack would be amazing!
Fingers crossed ;)
This is absolutely awesome! Love it and love how your daughter is getting involved. Perhaps she will become a storyteller herself, with all of this encouragement!
Thank you so much! I hope she does, I would love that more than you know :D Thanks for watching !
Beautiful work, Michael. That poor column, destroyed for nought but art, alas!
haha thanks Cross! Had to be done... ruins look great. I think the longer ruined one is my favourite actually
Fantastic build and I remember how much fun I hab when I carved a spoon from fresh wood when I was a kid. Thanks for your inspiration. :-)
Thank you!! I still haven't tried a spoon myself actually ... perhaps I will!
I do alot of painting, but not much terrain building. Still, I cant help but watch your excellent videos. This one was excellent, one of my favs.
Thanks so much :D
The little voices are amazing ! It made my day so much better ! Also great work, i wouldn't dream of carving foam this cleanly.
Thank you !! A little practice and anyone can do it ;)
Channel is coming along nicely. I first found your channel from that dwarven carving tutorial. Keep up the great work and hilarious voices.
Thanks Lucas! We are getting there slowly... I think I need to find more interesting titles and thumbnails to get more views. But I can't complain, any growth is good :)
I love this build and how it turned out. I'm pretty new to terrain building. So far I've been focusing on things that could be interchangeable between fantasy and historical war gaming - Tutor houses, wooden boats, things like that. I have not tried building anything Dwarven myself yet but this definitely gives me some ideas. I look forward to trying some of these techniques.
Awesome! I'm glad you found a little inspiration for new ideas :D
Hi Nat, So impressed with the Dwarven Totems.
Such a shock when you started breaking them up!
Thanks! haha it had to be done sadly... for the cause of art haha
Awesome! I recently moved and am now displaying my ol dawrf army. This was so usefull!
Thank you ! I am glad it helped :D
I actually cringed when you cut into the talking columns. What was it you had in the shaker jar? (Along with the bark pieces)?
Was just bark that I stuck in a blender and made very very fine :D
Those 4 Dwarven head columns are magnificent. Im gluing up some foam today and will attempt to recreate a few. 👍🏼
Awesome! Just a wee disclaimer to say, go slow and be careful. Over the years I have given myself a few nasties...
I've just recently gotten into modelling with foam, this was a great video! Definitely subbing for more
Awesome! Thank you. I hope you find the other videos of use :D
Not sure why this popped up on the frontpage, but I'm glad I clicked the video. Results are stellar!
Thanks so much! So glad you clicked the video :D
I've done a lot of foam work in my day, but not as much freehand carving. My grandfather did woodcarving that actually resembled the dwarven face stones quite similarly, definitely have to try out the techniques on a small scale!
Cheers Ben! Yeah, I learned the technique by carving woodspirits ... just transferred over to foam with a few added details to make the pillar shape :D
Durin or Dain and ... hmmm ... can't link the letters M - R and L to another king ! Dalin ? :-)
great piece !!! love the dwarven pilars !
You got one right !!! Thanks Tine, as always :D
Oh wow, it feels like fate, I'm just ordering some foam for carving and I find this tutorial. Thank you for helping us all learn how to craft cool and affordable scenery for our tables.
Awesome! It's fun to do, I hope you enjoy making some cool stuff :D
Really like the build, gives me some inspiration for next DnD session, and the accent was very interesting and made me laugh.
haha I'm terrible at accents... I think Scottish is the only one I can do well, it's not so far aff my own accent really
Those pooer dwarven stones! What a massacre :D! Great job as always, never saw anyone else using a carving knife for xps foam.
Thank you! I have seen a few people do it with some great results... saw one guy carve the Argonath and it was pretty impressive !
I’ve been wanting to get into tabletop rpg’s and creating terrain pieces, and these videos have been really helpful in letting me figure out how the hobby works.
Also I kinda need some good carving knives.
Awesome! Glad you find the videos helpful! Fingers crossed for the draw ;)
I just now found your channel, and I'm so happy I did. Your work is stunning!
Thank you so much! And welcome :D
Looks really good, I'm inspired to make my own. Hilarious massacre of dwarven statues too!
Thank you! Definitely give it a try. haha yeah, I had fun with that :)
Nice job,
Very impressive carving dwarf !
Do you have a step by step tuto?
Yes! The link is in the video description :)
Wow, these pillars look amazing! Not sure I could ever do such precise work, but well done.
I think you would surprise your self! Just a little practice ;)
just found your channel. Awesome videos and tutorials! Subscribed for sure
Awesome, thank you!
I really like you share your passion with your family. And something for middle earth (wargame or rpg) is always welcome 😁
Thanks! I love it when the little one wants to be involved... I hope her interest grows and grows :)
I want to carve these pillars for my AoS Dwarfts :o such an amazing work dude!
Nice! I think they would work really well for that !
Awesome terrain as alway. Every time I see one of your videos I think I’m gonna give terrain ago, then I don’t and do another miniature. If I win this prize it will be the kick up the arse to actually do some!!!
Miniatures are great too though! Make a small diorama to display one of your nice paint jobs ;)
I would never have thought about using wood carving tools, and there was me fighting with using a cheap retractable knife. Brilliant tips and tricks for a near beginner x
The carving knife is so useful. I do have a stanley knife also but I rarely use it ...
Sometimes I think crafters forget how much can be done with just a good knife, foam, pins, glue, and some time.
I know right!? You can achieve a lot with very little :D
Amazing build, love these. Just started getting into terrain building, and your videos are awesome.
haha sounds like a smelly evenings work lol
Ooh knives and stuff 😁. Haven't finished the video yet, just making sure I leave a comment just in case 😊
haha well your in for the draw now! Fingers crossed ;)
Just found your channel looking for some cool LotR terrain. Definatly going to check more of your videos!
Awesome! thanks for watching. I hope you enjoy my other videos :)
Just stumbled upon your channel and I really enjoy what I see. Subscribed!
Welcome aboard! Thank you so much :)
These look great. Do you think you could get away with using a knife and those shifting lands templates to recreate your Moria pillars?
Thanks! To be honest I have never tried that.... I think if you where patient and careful yes you could
Randomly found your channel. Love it!
Starting the hobby here too in NL! :)
Awesome! Welcome aboard!
Great video - thank you for posting! And another thank you for a cool giveaway!
Thank you James for taking the time to watch and comment :D
"some heavy books" - proceeds to stack an entire library on a poor little block of foam. Great stuff dude, bet it's nice to go back to basics sometimes!
Cheers Dene! Yeah was super fun to get carving again... might think up some more neat projects :)
Found the Channel. Really nice Work. :) And i need more time to Check the Rest of your Videos :)
Thank you !! I hope you enjoy the rest :D
I used to carve wood spirits out of bass wood.i hadn't thought about them in years then I saw this vid and now I'm digging in my closet looking for my carvers.your channel is awsome and thank you for inspiring me once again
Yes!! Dig them out :D Such a great tool :D
Amazing how having a wee helper adds to the experience. Lovely terrain always excited to see a new Nat 1 Video pop up in my feed.
Awesome! Yeah I do love crafting with her... it's fun with an activity like this where she really is helping!
Wonderful tips to make some cool dwarven art. Still have to try to make a few dwarven ruins yet myself.
Cheers! Ruins are so fun to make, mistakes just become part of it lol
Just came across this video. What a wonderful set of sculpts. Totally made me sub to your channel for more.
Thank you so much :D
200th like was me. Yay. Nice to see you getting back into carving! Love it dude
Thanks man! Need to think of something else other than Dwarven pillars to carve now lol
This video was great!
Easy to follow tutorial, great jokes and a curious young helper to top it off
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching :D
Nice little knife. Where do you get your small XPS blocks from?
I cut them down from larger sheets of foam...
It always amazes me how you're able to carve those columns so exact every time. If you told me they were printed or moulded, I'd believe you.
haha believe me they are all quite different, I wish I could do it better... But to be honest I should probably have done each face with a different expression to each other. Maybe for a different project :D
Amazing Job, Michael!
Best wishes and hugs from Brazil!
Thank you! It amazes me that people on the other side of the world are watching my videos haha :D
The Dwarven pillars are so nice. I’m not sure I trust myself with some of those cuts though ...
It does take care... just work slowly, don't rush it ;)
I think if I carved something as nice as those pillars, I wouldn't have the heart to destroy them.
haha I have had a few comments like that! I think the ruins look good too though... had to be done lol
Sir, you have really mastered carving! I am not just saying that as an entry into the giveaway. It is so cool seeing skills being transferred from one seemingly unrelated hobby into another.
Thank you so much! Still lots to improve... I really am still a beginner. I see what other people can do and I'm like... wow
I have nether thought about using traditional wood carving methods and stuff on foam for terrain ... this opens a whole new world of possibilities! Now I need to look for those tools - i think my kitchen knife might not be up to the task xD
haha yes, a kutchen knife will not do ... I left a link in the video description where you can get this exact set by the way ;)
Love the back to basics tool work. Great looking knoves for carving/shaping.
Thanks! Honestly such a useful tool. Its the shape of the handle I love too, so comfortable :)
Listening while doing dishes. Partway through forgot about dwarves. Skit comes up. I start wondering why you're doing an impression of Pratchett's Wee Free Men xD
haha that may have been part of the influence...
@@Nat1videos Siiiiiick!
This is the first hand carved foam video I have seen. I usually come across hot wire tool videos but using a whittle type knife is brilliant.
You can do a lot with the knife! I may have to do some more tutorials on it now.... people seem to like this :)
I have always thought those were the coolest carving knives on the market. Which are in your top 5 for use and value of that use?
I just love the whittling knife... I use it for everything
Love the dwarven architecture, and brilliant that you could do that with a handheld knife - Great job!
Thanks so much :D
Every time you make a terrain set like this, it makes me want to spend the weekend making some as well. This is going to be a good weekend for it and I have some inspiration too! Well done.
Awesome! Go for it!! Put it this way you only have something to gain from the experience, so get crafting :D
Great vid, can't wait to give this a crack for my Witcher TTRPG game!
Thanks! Awesome, I think it would work well for that :D
This looks really relaxing, until you hear the panic rise in the Dwarven voices.
haha sorry about that... I got carried away lol
Happy to see the return of the dwarf faces. And the tomb is tempting to build.
Thanks! It's a fun little project :D
My favorite moment of all the tutorial: ruclips.net/video/Qd-dRs9OxSs/видео.html ; "And they will get at the price!
hahaha
Huzzah,, that's my comment. Top Notch build
haha I like that as a comment! Nice ;)
Just dropped in by pure luck, so new sub here. Awesome tutorials you make!
Thank you so much ! And welcome aboard :D
Really fantastic tutorial. Look forward to trying with my son. 🤞
Awesome! Have fun :)
Love the blending of carving techniques and foam crafting!
Thank you :D
That looks fantastic! The skit had me laughing and feeling bad for those last two pillars!
Thanks! haha Maybe I shouldn't have personified them so strongly lol
A lovely video once again. Lovely to see G taking an active interest too! Thanks for the shoutout to my sconces!
Thank you dude! No problem, people love those sconces!
Wow…I’ve got to have me a go at carving some pillars…they are amazing!!!
Thanks! Yeah, definitely give it a shot :D
Dwarven statues are usually differentiated by helmets/beards.
According to which source ...?
This is the first of you videos that I've watched and it has instantly unlocked a new desire to carve! Great work 😀
Awesome! That makes me super happy :D
I appreciate the complex shapes you use. Non 90 degree angles are underrated.
Thanks! I got a bit bored with squares and circles haha
That was a really fun video man. Subscribed!
Thanks so much !
