Why I Quit Teaching After 15 Years (and Why I Invest in Multifamily Real Estate)

  • A year ago, I quit my W2 job as a high school teacher after 15 years of teaching math and physics in East Honolulu to pursue real estate investing full-time.
    My real estate journey began in 2008 with my family’s house in Anaheim, CA. From there, I explored various markets, including a 3-unit in Indianapolis and multiple properties in Pittsburgh. The game-changer came in 2019 with a 52-unit property in Saginaw, Michigan, marking the birth of Tri-city Equity Group. We sold it for a 123% total return in 3.4 years.
    During the pandemic, we closed on a 48-unit property in El Paso, Texas, and sold it in under two years for a 74% return. By the end of 2020, we had three more deals, all yielding impressive returns. In 2021, we bought and sold several more properties, consistently bringing significant returns to our investors.
    Meanwhile, I was helping clients buy and sell real estate on Oahu, using commissions to reinvest in multifamily deals. We renovated and sold a condo in Makiki and invested in a pre-construction unit in Ward Village.
    Real estate proved more lucrative than teaching, allowing me to reduce taxes through passive losses. The birth of my second son in 2022 made me prioritize family over a W2 job.
    To all teachers feeling the same, explore other careers if you’ve lost your spark. Life is too short to do something you don't love.
