    When taxes and fees are factored in there is no better choice than a market index for any extended period (say 10 years or more). The best analogy I can give you is the following: I am telling you BEFORE a 15 horse race starts which horse is guaranteed to finish 2nd. If one is foolish enough to say "I will ignore that advice as I think I can pick the winner" than so be it. You can make a hell of a lot of money knowing which horse finishes 2nd.

    Just curious, but is this return people speak of based on the rising of prices or some type of dividend? The dividend on S&P500 ETFs have very low yields and often drop 30% in recessions (which takes years and years to gain back). I know it's a combination of both, but what is the main source of gains over time? Price-change? or dividend?

      That's a good question which I don't have a good answer to. What I can tell you though is that the fraction of the growth from dividends has been trending down over time in the US because the US tax code advantages growth from the stock price and has done so since, I believe, the 1980s.

      I think people do listen to them, but find it hard to stick to their methods. Buying an S&P 500 index fund and holding it for 20 years is very effective, but pretty boring, so many people tend to start meddling with their investments. Buffett & Munger's leave technology stocks alone maxim, while very sensible also strikes many people as boring and they want to invest in the latest AI stock to try and get a multi bagger in a year or two.

      You can have infinite growth on a finite planet. It's called taking the value of the dollar down to zero. Print baby print. Or nowadays quantitative easing - just make a bank account with numbers in it. Once we divide by zero theoretically at least some of us will hit infinity. Depends which assets you hold at the end.

    • @user-nu8in3ey8c

      I am invested in infinite growth: some of the companies in the index fund I invest in will likely be some of the companies to make use in, or use directly, orbital infrastructure........and space is nearly infinite. So if any of the companies in my index fund make it into space and keep expanding, then my index fund will have "infinite" growth.

    Is there a difference between holding an S&P 500 ETF vs non ETF?

    • @stefang2014
      @stefang2014 4 года назад +1

      Not really. An ETF can be easily bought/sold during market hours as (the name suggests) they're actively traded. Whereas with an index it can be bought/sold once at market close - that'll be the final and only price until next session market close. So, an ETF will have price fluctuations throughout the day. But careful when picking ETF's in and within specific sectors or securities as liquidity may be an issue. But for tracking a major index like the S&P not really a concern.

      You only know this by looking the hindside. You will never know when you are in the turmoil. Just keep buying and average up or down through the course, which is the way to go. If you think you can time the market and buy low and sell high, good luck! But most likely you are delusional......

      Even if you were dollar cost averaging on a monthly basis, it would have still taken you 15 years to break even during the great depression and 10 years during the tech bubble and the 2008 financial crises. It's not a problem if this happens during your early investment years while you're young and still have a lot of time left (though it might discourage you when you see your portfolio loosing 50-60% of it's value). The problem is if this happens during your last investment years, just before you were planning to retire. You'd have to work another 10-15 years just to be able to retire comfortably (if this happens when you're 65, you'd be 75 or 80 just to break even). If you are still planning to dollar cost average, your best bet is investing on an annual basis, it gives much better returns than investing every month, has smaller drawdowns and much faster recovery to break even (3-5 years in worst cases).

      Dollar cost average into equities and dollar cost average out on the glide path to retirement. We don’t change a portfolio all at once during either the accumulation or withdrawal stages of our lives. Take the depression and other catastrophic examples and average them in with all the other points on the continuum of history of the markets when we might have entered the market. We can’t predict ahead of time what the markets will do. Critics of Mr. Bogle’s approach are often brokers who earn by their clients stock-picking and buying/selling frequently.

      Technically it is possible that stagnation could occur. What's funny is that Japan far outstripped the USA between 1950 and 1988 40 years later, growing WELL above 10 or even 15% annualy on average, and since then, over the past 30 years, they still haven't even come that close to equaling their previous peak. Strange how it happened that way.

Both combined hold but a fraction of that held by foreign countries, which is but a small fraction of the total. So a few percent. Maybe. The vast majority of analysts and economists believe a major crash is coming (and it 100% is), so why on earth would it make sense to buy right now??? Why not lock in gains, sell, then buy once the crash is over?
