Personally I LOVE finding a used book with annotations in it. It feels like a pen pal you’ll never meet.
right!!! 🥺👉👈
I saw someone say they would like a club of sorts where one person started annotating a book and then passed it on and then that person would annotate and so on - the sisterhood of the travelling annotations, I think they called it :D Thought you might enjoy that idea.
@@Swaymus I adore this idea, may have to start this up in my area!
@@Swaymus I adore this! I might have to introduce this idea to my friend
@@Swaymus yes I love this! I read Pride and Prejudice, annotated it and sent it to my friend as a present
Love this! Sounds like your green tabs are for allusions. Allusions are literary references to previously existing literature, art, history, mythology, etc. Can also be references to the pop culture of the author's era.
Oh EXACTLYYY 💖💖💖
I love those. We call those intertextual references in Danish. I love when Danish authors use allusion for some foreign work :D
@@Swaymus ooh, I love that term "intertextual references." I'm going to start using that to teach my students about allusion :)
Oh that’s cool! I’m sorry to ask, but if you are comfy to say, what grade do you teach? If you aren’t comfortable, you don’t have to answer! Because- (IDK IF THAT IS TMI LOL)! Thank u!
Annotating is so fun and helpful.. with a classic, my pretentiousness just comes out (I love to convince myself that I’m a genius with in depth thoughts). I find that it also helps me pay more attention to the text and remember more as opposed to when I don’t tab something. I haven’t ventured as far as writing directly in my books (at least with books that aren’t classics), but I’ll get there eventually.
I think classics are my favorite to annotate as well because my inner nerd comes out and I can live my academia fantasy 😂💖
As a teacher, I've spent years trying to get students to write in (their own) books. I wish more students did this--it encourages critical thinking and engagement. I love it. When a kid shows up to class with a highlighter, I'm always like, "Yep, that one's going to meet me in the middle."
Be annotation I next to never remember what I read, but now it's a habit I remember so much now 😁
We were encouraged to do this! Our school called it “active reading” or “active reading notations”
"It becomes so much more than a simple book when you anotate in it." YES! Someone needed to talk about this.
I have ADHD and writing a small summary after each chapter helps me stay in the flow. It gives my eyes a break from just reading, and gives my hands AND brain something to DO. I do it on post-its on the title page of the chapter, and after finishing the book I'll combine all the notes into a bare-bones storyline in a reading journal. As a summary of the whole plot, story, and it shows me the pacing, too.
This is me!!! I seriously loveee making a separate little journal for the books I feel fondly about. :)
Yep this is the best way I've found for myself as well...
This is actually a really good idea, I'll try this.
I’ve done a page of books I read on notion because I want to help keep myself remembering what I’ve read and what I thought ☺️ really enjoying it!
Thank you for sharing - I love this idea!
Regarding highlighters…there are “crayon wax” type highlighters used to highlight Bibles. I use them in all my books. Bible pages are typically thin paper so these don’t bleed.
I do the same thing for my Bibles! I love the mildliners too! They're very light on the thin pages 😊
hello! can you recommend a brand?
@@hallelsandoval4731 sharpie
I found that erasable highlighters do not bleed through for me. I use the pilot frixion highlighters
oooo same bro, I used to totally bleed my bible when I used regular highlighter 😂😂😂
Girl don't hesitate to unhaul an annotated book! I have found them in my local thrift stores. I've gotten used copies of books online that have been annotated. I can still read the book so I don't care that it has markings on it and it's kind of interesting to see what some other person that had it before me felt necessary or felt moved by! It almost in a sense gives a feeling of buddy reading even if you don't know who that person is.
I won't buy them when they have writing in them. I don't want other peoples scrawl in my book. I am in a reading group if i want other opinions .
@@racheldemain1940 don't buy them then, somebody else will 😌 it's okay to not like annotated books, but many many readers will love it. especially introverts who don't engage with people easily irl. personnaly i would buy a book i didn't want to buy in the first place just because someone has put pieces of themselves in it...🌻
I also commit piracy:D
I love when books have notes on it, is funny to try to understand what the people wants with it
i would also buy it. i almost picked up a copy of one last stop because it had tabs in it (im assuming they were reading goals for a book club maybe?) from a tiny library but decided against it. i would definitely read someone’s annotations, even if i disagreed with them lol. it’s like reading with someone
7:10 Fiction books annotation.
Pink - fav qoutes/line/passage
Orange - funny
Yellow - important moments/info
Green - angry moments // analzye historical context.
Trying to understand what it means/symbolize-->further research. Dissecting/analysing
Blue - sad moments
Dark/light purple - fav moment
Every 100+ pages = post it note. Of summary.
There is no right or wrong in annotation just have fun with it it's all for you and not for anyone else.
Treat it as you own diy book pleasure.
Thanks!
I love to annotate, but I was scared to write in them too. Eventually, i started to realize that the book is just plain, but annotations make it YOU! My sister loves reading my annotations when she steals my books. Such a great way to interact and become a better reader.
Highlights than NEVER BLEED THROUGH: pilot friction highlighters . They have pastel colors too! Because you can erase them they kind of seat on top of the paper and don’t “soak in”. Those are best of the best if you worried about highlighter bleeding through
Thank you thank you thank you thank you
Spelled “Frixion” but pronounced “friction.” 😉
Also gel highlighters or Bible highlighters don’t absorb into the page either, they sit on top.
Personally, once I realized I was the only one that would see my annotations until I'm gone and my books are in a thrift store or something, it became a lot more fun. Poking fun at spicy scene word choices, a meme a line reminded me of, etc. I accepted I'm not always going to come across as an intellectual in my annotations and that's okay, because I'm having fun with it!
At first, a friend of mine said "Is a sacrilege to damage your books, I can't stand seen books with underlines..." and I was starting my reading habits, so I didn't annotate nothing on my books.
Later, when discover Booktube and this big world, I realize that it was in a big mistake to acquire someone else thoughts without thinking of what makes me get fun while reading a book.
Love your video and now I have another ideas of annotating 👌
I love that for you!! 🥰🥰
Hhdhgfhejjggrhhhyrhjhhhrojjjdiggrjxhvxjhbnd
i recently started annotating and i think annotating made me read every single word with deep focus , it helps with my english learning and connecting the dots
I loved how part of the definition for annotating was to help the reader feel closer to a book. I completely agree and I'm glad that nuance was included. It becomes such a personal experience when you annotate.
I love your tip about writing a post-it every after 50-100 pages. I will definitely try doing that with my fantasy books!
they're a maaajor help!
Annotating a book is like finding gold in a cave. The book is the cave, your favorite moments are the gold and your annotating process are the tools.
Really loved this video! Your process isn't overly complicated and this video approved my own annotating system lol.
From a 43 yo bookworm- thank you for introducing me to the wonders of this idea! I read very quickly, but sadly “dump” the book info out of my memory banks very quickly as well. It’s been a huge irritation to me for years. I think doing this will help with that and be fun as well. Thanks again!
You’re absolutely welcome 🥹💗🫶
Same and I am 65
I tend to annotate books when I am rereading them, I try to reread a book every 2 months or so and I love filling up my favorites with my annotations. I tend to just use a black pen, color coding is too stressful for me and I don’t cate for sticky tabs, but i just underline with my black pen and write my thoughts in the margins!
I do the same exact thing.
agreed! the hassle of switching colour pen when highlighting is driving me crazy
The green one is seriously the best idea ever! Sometimes I don’t get references and this is a great way to understand Jen and put it right there in the margins
For highlighters that don't bleed through I suggest the Tombow brush pens, the pastel ones! 🙋♀️
Uuu I need to try those out!! Thank you for the suggestion 💖
Most definatley, :) the lighter colours are awesome :)
I tried these and the color bleeds to the back
I don’t really like annotating too much because to me it feels like when you’re studying and you highlight a whole assignment (which defeats the purpose lol), but I’m planning on starting “The Tale of Genji” and I think annotations could be super helpful since it’s massive and super old!
i recently annotated war and peace and it deeefinitely helped a lot in enjoying / understanding the story!
Yess, I really don’t enjoy redundant highlighting. I make sure to use it on small parts that are important
I've always been a "DON'T TOUCH THE BOOK" person too and kind of trying to keep them perfect, but you reinforced what I've been thinking for a few weeks about anotations as a way of telling stories. The major reason that changed my mind was bc now my books are filled with humidity and there's no going back for that lmao but it can be beautiful as well depending on how you see it. Besides that, you inspire me so much, you transmit such an incredible peace, i really love your channel
you're too kind, thank you so much :")
your annotated books look so stunning! honestly, I think I started annotating books because I saw you doing it and just told myself to just go with it, so thank you for that.
you’re so welcome 🥺💖
I always enjoy this video no matter how many times I see it. It’s interesting to see everyone’s different process
Honestly, thank you so much. I’ve always wanted to start annotating and I just use tabs at the moment and this video had honestly helped me a lot so thank you
I’m so happy I found your channel. I can’t wait to try the highlighters and tabs. This video is so good!
I’ve just started annotating and I LOVE it!! During the summer after a pretty terrible school year bec of being pretty much broken and betrayed by what I thought was a real friend I was just so unnecessarily stressed and anxious for no reason at all- I saw lots of people on tik tok showing off their annotated books and I thought it looked fun plus I used to love reading and really needed a distraction from the mental state I was in , and I didn’t know how to start at all. I watched loads of videos and yours finally gave me the starting points I needed, and I started annotating a book I’ve read before which btw turned out to be such a helpful thing to do- when u start annotating u focus so much on the actual annotating bec u don’t know how to do it than the actual story so if u annotate a story u already know what happens it gives u the time to actually focus on HOW to annotate or else u don’t normally understand the story as quickly bec ur not focusing on it as much, after annotating a book I’ve already read I pretty much got the “way” I guess of how I want to do it and then I began annotating new books no regrets at all and I feel so happy doing it too which was the main goal 💕
I started annotating with The Picture of Dorian Gray. In fact it started because English isn't my main language so I only used it for traduction. But that book is SO SAVAGE that I couldn't stop myself from annotating. TIP FOR BEGINNERS: use pencil instead of pen so you can erase it if you want to sell it. I also used symbols and braquets in the sides to express feelings (heart, :(, and so).
YESSSS DORIAN GRAY IS SUCH A FUN BOOK TO ANNOTATE!!!
Yes! I know this is an old comment but that’s the book I’m annotating right now.
I love it tons and it’s so fun.
I also find the book more amusing than it should be probably heh :)
I also wanted annotating an I buy Dorian Gray ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You could try out ball point coloured pens too! Fibre point and gel ink usually bleed through easily but since ball point ink is essentially dry as soon as u write it might work out for u :)))
I started using the gellyroll moonlight pens in the neons. They’re nice for underlining because the colors stick out and there’s no ghosting and bleeding. You just need to be careful of smudging if you get the 10s ☺️
It's so satisfying to see you flip through your annotated war and peace book 😍
I love how detailed this is! Made me ease into annotating, been wanting to do it but my anxiety to ruin my books kept saying otherwise. Glad to have found you, Isabella! 💜
I love love love annotating books! I've only just recently started, so there are very few books with annotations, but I find I remember more and have a deeper enjoyment since I'm forced to slow down
I feel like this video is what I've been waiting for. I've always wanted to annotate but was super confused. I'm reading Murakami currently and I've just started annotating, your video was so awesome!! It's definitely gonna help me in my process :)
I love all the pens you use, they're my go-tos as well. Also, I use zebra brush tip midliners to highlight -- they don't even bleed through dictionary pages. Also, I haven't tested any of them out, but they make specific highlighters for bibles which have very thin pages, so I imagine those highlighters wouldn't bleed.
oh my gosh stuuuunning 🤍 I love !! I love when you show us your annotations so this is perfect
You’re so very welcome 💖
i love annotating in my books, is like they are part of me in the instant i put a highlight on the pages. is more like personal then everything. and i loved the video, thanks for sharing your thoutghs!!!!
I feel the same way!! I’m so happy you enjoyed 🥺💖
For highlighters that don’t go through the page, I recommend erasable friction ones because the ink doesn’t sink into the page. I don’t know how long lasting they are, but they’ve worked well for me
Careful using those pens. They are erasable because they respond to heat and friction, so over time they may fade or disappear.
hoe about wax crayon?
I looked into other annotation videos and this one is my favorite. You did a great job at explaining the tips and you generalized your process really well that it was quick and concise but also information. Great work! I'll be subscribing.
thank you so much!!
I love how you picked the picture of dorian gray to show us examples :D I literally started reading it today and I’m tabbing every single page 🥲 it’s just SO good 😫
I’ve been annotating my books since I was in elementary school and it’s honestly really fun and enhances the reading experience so much.
I wish I could read other people’s annotations, I just think it’s really interesting and beautiful how everyone relates to a book in a different way.
Also thank you for sharing your tips! I’m definitely going to try writing my thoughts every 50/100 pages. That’s such a brilliant idea! ❤️
@TimTim How did you annotate your books in elementary school ? I am trying to figure out how to do it and maybe seeing how someone did it elementary school might help me to figure it out.
@@logann-mackenziefroste563 honestly I didn't even know there was such a thing as annotating. I just had these tabs and whenever I was reading and felt like I wanted to look back at a certain part later, I'd tab it. at first I didn't write in my books, I just tabbed, then I started using sticky notes, then pencil and now I write with pen and underline and highlight.
I also don't annotate everybook. I just read and tab for the first 50-100 pages and if it seems like a book I wanna annotate, I go back to my tabs and write my thoughts.
remember not to pressure yourself. annotating is supposed to be fun. read for enjoyment and slowly and step by step annote books you know you're gonna love and keep.
@@timtim2247 Awesome. I tabs and pencils ✏️ to underline while reading Harry Potter just for my favourite parts.
Annotated version of picture of Dorian gray >>>>> Picture of Dorian gray
We should start a book exchange club except with only annotated books, and then (If you know the other people well) you have to guess who the book belonged to 😂
You are so inspirational the last speech was so good and heartwarming
Your annotations look so great! I love annotating, it’s so fun to go back and see my thoughts
Thank you so much!! 💖🥺
I like to annotate books on the second read which maybe defies the point but i find it more fun. This video gave me so much motivation thanks queen
i've been rereading books lately and adding new annotations on top of the ones i did the first time around and it's been so fun 🤧💗
I always TRY to annotate my books but I never end up doing it because im always carrying the book around wherever I go, and it's not that easy to write on a post-it on a moving train! But this helped a lot and I now know how to organize and colorcode my things I use for annotating my books! Thank you
Whatever works for you honestly!! Sometimes when I can’t annotate I just tab it or write down the page in my notes app for future annotating
@@throneofpages ooh that’s smart! I’ll do that from now on thanks! :))
This really helped me feel more comfortable in trying to annotate. I'm gonna try this when rereading an old one to start off:)
Okay, this was so helpful as I’ve never annotated any of my books before but definitely taking your advice and starting easy with tabs !! Thank you, queen💛
you're so very welcome 💛🌷
I totally agree with you writing in books is just beautiful its not for everyone but it really makes reading that book unique, also i hope your hand is okay much love 💗
It’s getting better!! Thank you for asking 💖💖
If you’re hesitant about writing in books this is THE BEST tip ever, you can buy clear posted notes and place them on top of the text and annotate on there it’s all see through so you can read the book fine. You can also highlight the text on the posted note . Another options are erasable pens and highlighters they are honestly great and you can rub them out.
Do you know where I can get the clear post it notes 👀👀
@@throneofpages i saw at target, office depot, walmart, five below and apparently amazon 😂
Thank you so much for this tip! I’d never heard of these before but I’ve just ordered some from Amazon which will change everything for me regarding annotating. Thank you ☺️💛
Always an inspiration! 🥰😍Giving me the motivation to annotate my books, more classics books actually!
annotating classic books is sooo fun!
Dude when did the comment section become my new teacher?? You guys have taught me so much about literature and definitions plus tips in like five minutes. This video was also SO informative, I was talking with a professor and they sent me over to your channel. I'm impressed!
i discovered your channel 2 days ago and I was this 🤏 close to comment asking if you could explain how you annotate- so this is literally perfect. also I love your videos

The moment I started playing the video, I felt so comfortable again. Even though Im way more simple with my annotating and im happy with a marker, I still LOVED watching your video once again!!!🤍🤍
you're so nice please 😭✋i'm so happy you enjoyed!!
Another great video!! I love seeing your system of hows and whys, as I'm still trying to figure out my own personal annotating system...all I know so far is that there is nothing more fun than attacking a book with a highlighter 🤣
ATTACKING A BOOK WITH HIGHLIGHTER 😂😂💀
I love the idea of reflecting on the book every so often. I think I’m gonna use that thanks!
I've never annotated in books and I feel I'm missing out which is why I'm here😂. I love how you say you get to see your own character development when rereading books you already annotated💖 This video was super helpful for me. I took notes!!!
i just CAN'T annotate a book, it doesn't;t work with my OCD with books.
@@racheldemain1940 That is very understandable!! Can you add tabs to show your favourite passages, or is it more that you can't have anything on the pages at all? I can understand needing your books to look as beautiful and pristine as when you first opened them😊
I love your shirt!!! Also I love to annotate my books! I haven’t been doing it lately but I need to start again 💕
I feel so motivated to annotate thanks to this video! I've been taking notes on a notebook of my favorite series the air of the folk! Thank you luv

I used to write the page numbers of my favourite moments on the title page, but your method is much easier, I love it!
happy i could help!!
this method is also used by Robert Kiyosaki
I have a notebook by my side and have no need to ruin a book
Love what you said on how it's for you not anyone else.
It was so fun and interesting, actually I think I may start doing this tomorrow! Especially with fantasy and classics books, I have yet so many ideas! Thank you queen 👑
YESSSSS HAVE FUN!!
Very useful information. I have been on the fence about annotating for a while now. Thanks to your video, I'm going to finally give it a try!
Glad it was helpful!
for the bogged down question:
i take pictures of pages i want to go back to and annotate if i’m not in the mood to do it in the moment. plus it lets me go back and revisit those moments once i’m finished with the book.
It gives so much motivation 😭💗
Such an amazing video Bella 💗💗 inspired me to pick up my sticky notes and pen again, much love
i'm so happy to hear that 🥺💛
These days I am trying to learn how to annotate. I started writing my thoughts for king lear the shakespeare play and you come along with video I wanted to watch. Thank you !
You’re very welcome!! I hope it helped 💖

I love that 🥺💖

literally, I love you sm. You say such helpful things, and this really helped me. I'm going to start annotating now, byeeeee!
Ahh I’m so happy I could help!! 💘✨
I LOVED your whole video but I just have to say that song you used for the end of your video Ahhhhhhhh I’m so happy! I’ve never seen anyone else take interest in the song and I just love that show so much. 😆😆😆
I love seeing how ppl annotate their books, that’s partly what motivated me to start doing it too! If anyone’s worried about starting to annotate, I would recommend using a pencil. That’s what I do (I started writing in my books pretty recently, i tried using tabs at first but i didn’t vibe with it) and i keep erasing and rewriting my notes so it’s great for me :) plus if worst comes to worst you can erase all your notes (carefully, it can rip pages and if the book’s ink is not very good it can fade under your eraser) to resell the book. You can probably do this with colored pencils but they tend not to get erased as easily. I also use post-it sometimes for longer thoughts if it doesn’t fit on the page. Since i tend not to use tabs, or color code, i put a cross in the margin next to the most important quotes so i can see them more easily when flipping through the book + i more often than not write little comments so i can remember why i underlined that part ^^
Seeing books annotated this beautifully made my heart flutter
this is the best video i've seen on the topic! thank you for sharing
you're very welcome :')
I love when it comes to people who make it all cute... my adhd as* makes me underline and box things just to retain a little bit of the book. Even if I don't love the book I have marks all over just so I can follow along and actually remember the details rather than letting it all go
Annotating is a very personal experience it doesn’t need to look good or pretty or cute!! Whatever works for you is the way to go 😭
@@throneofpages It also helps if people feel like they're being unproductive if they're reading! I have tangible proof I was doing something and it always makes me feel a lot better :)
I love seeing different coding systems with colors.
I personally do yellow for important plot points because it's the basic, blue for beautifully established places or prose, green for favorite parts or parts that ellicite strong emotion for me, pink for strong character development or growth, things that I know I might go back to to make sense of something a character does when the shoe drops, and then orange for moments that make me laugh.
I just found your channel and I'm literally obsessed w you ♡♡♡
Thank you so much 🥺👉👈
i watched a lot of videos on annotating ..but i was so confused and i came across this today.. thank you for explaining simply and making it not look intimidating. also i loved the summary post its idea because sometimes i leave a book in the middle

i'm so so happy you found me too 😭💞
Amazing video! I love writing on books. It's such a cozy moment :) thanks for sharing.
I have these same tabs. I started tabbing away because of you lol. I also realized before seeing your other video I won't annotate in the beginning either because I need to know for sure I will love or like the book enough to keep it. My first book I started at chapter 12. After I am finish I will go back and annotate. I also tab pages I need to go back if I don't care to write. I love it.
Yes!! Exactly 💖💖 when you get that feeling of “oh I definitely need to annotate this” it’s such a wonderful feeling
I love your explanation of annotation. I have two “journaling” bibles one for my in-depth bible studies and the other for just meditating on the text. There are so many people who think you shouldn’t write in bibles but I like having ones dedicated to that purpose rather than a separate notebook. I use Microns (only black at the moment) and high quality colored pencils as highlighters. Much like you “feeling” like highlighting or underlining I use colors for highlighting based on what color feels right for the occasion lol.
I have been thinking on annotating for normal reading, thank you for your thoughts! Great video
thank you so much!
i LOVE annotating books, especially classics!! i personally don't have a set method to annotating, i just annotate what feels right with the book. for instance, a book may be more character-driven, so i take note of the characterization (personality traits, how the mc interacts and evolves, etc.), while another book may be rich with themes. i would love to use highlighters, tabs, and colored pens but i'm so inconsistent and often lose commitment lol, that i need to use few materials as possible so i only use black gel ink pens to underline, circle, and scribble notes on the margins.
i could listen to you talk all day everyday!! amazing, exquisite, chefs kiss, you are inspiring and beautiful, only you could make my adhd brain interested in talking about pens and tabs and annotating! now can i put you in my annotating pouch 👀🤭❤️
i have been jared 19 for so so long and reading mainly webcomics and manga, but your excitement for annotations makes me want to pick up a physical book and honestly even read more classics!!!

Love your video and it gave me more confidence in annotating my books. I just started annotating and I'm afraid if I don't like the book I can't unhaul it, really like reading at least 100 pages, tabbing and writing on sticky notes, great idea! I also like your meaning of each tab color.
I’m so glad my video helped you out!! 💖
@@throneofpages I'm annotating my first book. I'm tabbing, underlining and writing notes directly in the book I'm reading, I love it! It's true for me and as mentioned in your video, it really does personalize the book, and how I was feeling during certain scenes. It's great.
My method is quickly tabbing first and when I'm done reading I go back and underline and make notes, found this works so well for me, and relaxing at the same time.
@@throneofpages hi! QUESTION : what are u circling with a black pen for example here 8:50 in the purple paragraph u circle the world had become wonderful why did u circle BTW I love your videos
6:54 this looks soooo good omg. I feel so motivated
17:35 For highlighters, I use the mildliners by zebra and unless you press hard or go over it the text a lot they don’t bleed through thin pages they do ghost through a little ( where you can slightly see the color through the page) but they don’t bleed though.
that's amazing because not only you put yourself through the book but also you mull over through it and make your experience so beautiful however i personally find it kind of difficult cause it need lots of work and attention,i don't regularly annotate my books in the specific way you do but i try underline the impressive parts and sometimes write my thoughts on it wich sometimes feel good on the other side i get worried about the probability that someone read my book and finds my thoughts pointsless or ridiculous 😅😅anyway what you do is admirable you should keep going this way excellent 👏👏
thank you so much!! for me annotating is a very personal experience and since they're my books i don't really think about what others would think if they read my annotations, after all i'm not trying to impress anyone just annotate my books :)
@@throneofpages i see it is something special i reckon it makes you understand your perspective better so it would be easier to change or improve our thoughts wish you luck👍👍
this was so interesting! i'm still on the stage of annotation with just post its but i want to actually write in my books at some point.
regarding highlights that don't bleed through, apparently bible highlighters are good as they are made to not damage the thin bible pages
Ohh thank you for the tip!!
Your videos make my day ❤
The queen of annotating has spoken and we have been blessed ✨
