"This is a picture of the tsunami taken in a residential area of Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai City on March 11th.
You can feel the fear of the tsunami rushing into the residential area. Fortunately, there were no casualties around here, but the floor was flooded."
Duration: 11:26
Format: SD Video
Location: Wakabayashi Ward and surroundings.
There were countless vehicles carried out to sea on receding waters, unfortunately, many were occupied!
This also applied to buildings!
People were also washed out to sea, some clinging onto floating wreckage, but the majority were dead, either drowned, fatally injured after being struck by debris from the wreckage field, or having succumbed to hypothermia in the freezing cold waters!
Those swept out to sea in slowly sinking vehicles suffered horrific deaths, with no hope of rescue or escape.
Likewise those in buildings or clinging to wreckage, their time limited to however long buoyancy or their grip strength could be maintained.
People from virtually every coastal area were never seen again, likewise their vehicles, homes and workplace structures.
The numbers of people reported missing after the 2011 Japanese Tsunami would be lower than the real number of those never seen again, including entire families.
This is due to the system of reporting a person as missing in Japan, which makes it a requirement for relatives to make the report, but when those relatives are themselves missing, no report can be filed!
Given the magnitude of the destruction and complete loss of entire coastal communities, including their records, buildings, structures, vehicles and people, its not a surprise that the numbers of reported missing persons differs from the actual number of people that have literally vanished from the face of the earth...
This must be the inner reach of the wave as it's shallow these were the lucky ones
