I'd say the set design is second.. Recognizing the streets from the game is a treat you don't often get (though it's easy when it basicly exist in real life)
"Is Date part basset hound?!" Please assure me that was an intentional nod to the fact that Date's English voice actor from Yakuza 1 also originally voiced Sam in Sam & Max Hit the Road, because that's one brilliant reference.
fun like fact when i looked up the cast of this movie, some of the actors names are nearly identical with the characters in the movie/game. like Kazuki Kitamura who played as Kiryu Kazuma and Goro Kishitani as Majima Goro
Majima's eyepatch part is excusable because of the actor's condition with that eye and ngl it doesnt really take away from his quality at all. That man was born to play Majima.
The Kiryu/Haruka segments would have been vastly improved if they hadn't diverted so much attention to random new characters with barely anything to do with the plot of Yakuza.
I love this movie, it's so bad and dumb, lmao. I think it would have greatly benefited from just sticking to the game instead of feeling the need to add these irrelevant subplots. When the movie does decide to adapt the game, it's when the movie is at it's strongest and I think it shows the strength of the source material. I feel as if there was some sort of lack of faith in the original material which ultimately brings the film down. Either way it's still a fun movie to laugh at but also get wrapped up in when it actually decides it wants to be a Yakuza movie. One of the few films I deem a guilty pleasure of mine.
Shintai it was a good movie for what it was although not entirely true to the game. I really only watched it twice after I bought it on PSN 2 or 3 years ago. But I say if your a fan of Yakuza it’s worth watching at least once.
I think it's smart they went the "one summer night in Kamurocho" route, since it probably would of been just as awkward if they were to try and stuff the entire plot of Y1 into an hour and a half. It feels more like a casual study of the setting and its inhabitants more than a cohesive plotline. The movie looks pretty nice (Majima's street fight and anytime Crazy Ken Band started playing is the best
majima's the best part of the movie, of course that doesn't even need to be said because its so obvious but the thing that pissed me off most about this movie was why did yumi have to detonate the bomb? like her fucking kid was a like only a couple feet away when it went off was she trying to kill haruka xd
@@krauser18x God. Adapting it for the west would be missing like 50% of the fucking point lol. Kiryu gonna be called Johnny and he works with Gangsters.
Recently I started playing Yakuza Zero & Kiwami and I've had fun with them. Like you said this movie isn't good introduction at all. I've known the series for a long time but Yakuza Zero got me to try the series. And there is no coming back from it
I feel like this was an *accurate* adaptation, in that it captured what's fun about the series in another medium. Though, it definitely feels like it was an addition to the games, not it's own thing.
I think it's kinda funny that the characters in the game are all 100% buffed up, but the movie characters seem like a quarter way/almost half way there LOL
Honestly, Yakuza 0 Kiryu should have looked like he did in this movie. Edit: Not dissing on final Y0 Kiryu, but I find his movie look+hairstyle makes him look younger than he did in Y0.
I know this video is years old at this point, but I'm leaving this comment anyway. This movie gets much more entertaining when you picture it as existing in-universe. Given Zombie Majima in Kiwami 1, and his dialogue about having the funds to film a zombie movie, I'm convinced that after the events of the first game Majima directed this movie to commemorate his time with Kiryu, which would explain (a) why this movie is so wacky and (b) why Majima is the best part - of course he'd give the best directions to the dude playing him. Editing later to mention that it also explains why some plot details from the game are missing - it's stuff Majima wouldn't know.
Im here bc they announced a new film adaptation of the Yakuza games. I'd have preferred a netflix series so I can see Yakuza 0 adapted but a film is good too if they're adapting Yakuza 1.
I'm pretty sure that this film's plot is made the way it is because of Miike. He's done a lot of films where there's God knows how many plots seemingly appearing out of nowhere, with new characters introduced and becoming major players around the half mark of the film or what not. He just wants to create atmosphere and scenes that are special and cool, whilst not caring about traditional narrative choices. He mostly does this as a stylistic choice where the world seems messy and huge, lots of crazy stuff is happening and the characters are presumably lost. It's one of his many themes that appear regularly in his films. You gotta watch a lot of his films to truly appreaciate something like this.
Kind of wish they redid the film. But make it a 10 part episode, with each episode being 1 hour long. But hoping they can still make it high budget, anything that's transitioning from an already established in a game or book, always needs high end budget.
after all your rant, you could replace the entire movie with cuts of Yakuza 1 scene, and you'll still get accurate review of Y1. this movie is perfect rendition of Yakuza 1. A truly genious movie. You could also adds a lot more enjoyment while rewatching the movie if you convinced yourself with this 1 information; The director of this movie is Majima Goro. It will makes so much sense.
Just pointing out the original yakuza game came out in 2005. Yakuza 0 was not the first game to come out. In fact it came out in 2015. And the kiwami games are actually newer than 0 is. And this movie if I’m not mistaken is 2007. Barely anyone was a yakuza fan back then besides myself and a few others. Most of you guys didn’t even join the train until 0 came out, well after this movie
I've said it before. The bank robbery scene should've been removed. The couple stealing shit should've been removed or rewriten More focus should've been put in Kiryu and Haruka
I had thought the the many plot distractions were supposed to be their idea of sub-stories, but I feel like they didn't fully understand what the sub-stories are supposed to be lol
I can't believe you would say kiyru murdered those people, kiyru and majima never killed anyone ever, also the movie isn't available for purchase anymore
The movie is a mess and if someone has never played the games before watching it they would have no idea what is going on but i still enjoyed it. The actor who played Majima was perfect and i was so hyped when Kiryu refilled his heat bar in the final fight scene, that was so fucking funny and badass.
Saying that this movie was a shitty mess is being too kind... it was terrible. Nothing actually fits with the game, the actors were chosen while the director wore a blindfold and there wasn't a single second where I didn't ask myself: is there anyone who can enjoy this garbage...? And if there is, have they played any game from the franchise?
Seriously Majima is the only part that's good lol. Ans Haruka is kinda good too, she really looks close to the real deal, it's just that the actress sounds like she's reading her lines, but it's fine because the actress was really 10 years old back then. Another thing though, everybody says how hot it is, but why does everyone keep wearing jackets then?
It seems like the movie was meant to be seem by people who already played yakuza 1/Kiwami but even so it's still a confusing mess. Majima carried the entire movie, I loved every scene he was in and made the entire movie worth watching. The one thing that kept bothering me the most throughout the movie was the *damn* eyepatch misplacement with Majima. CUT, STOP THE MOVIE, AND FIX IT.
When watching this movie for the first time, it almost drove me nuts, not knowing what was bugging me about Majima. Damn eyepatch. I guess they did it because Kitano has real bad eyesight? He's wearing glasses anyway so maybe his right eye is even worse than the left one? Maybe someone can clear this up, would be much appreciated
This movie had majima everywhere system before it was cool
Underrated comment
Fun fact: Jingu in this movie is played by Toshihiro Nagoshi, the creator and lead director of the game series.
Funniest thing in this movie is seeing Kido from Yakuza 4 acting as Kiryu
I thought he looked like him lmao
Honestly the best part of the movie was Majima
He definitely saved the movie
His acting was PERFECT
I'd say the set design is second.. Recognizing the streets from the game is a treat you don't often get (though it's easy when it basicly exist in real life)

Jesus. I nearly choked on my drink.
Majima really saves the movie, like everything he appears in...
"Is Date part basset hound?!"

it totally was! I'm glad someone caught it XD
Oh really? I had a feeling that his voice sounded familiar!
So he's also goofy?
7:57 "Kiryu murders 10 of Majima mean."
Nah they're alright Kiryu is just firing Rubber Bullets, he would totally not kill anyone for real.
fun like fact when i looked up the cast of this movie, some of the actors names are nearly identical with the characters in the movie/game. like Kazuki Kitamura who played as Kiryu Kazuma and Goro Kishitani as Majima Goro
It looks like they choosed actors based on their names rather than their appearance.
@@XXXXD pretty much. But Goro Kishitani really nailed it as Majima.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie I bought it and Majima is the best part of the whole movie he's hilarious

If they reduced the side story, they could have properly fit the whole Yakuza game story into this movie.
Instead, they added two sub-stories.
The Kiryu/Haruka segments would have been vastly improved if they hadn't diverted so much attention to random new characters with barely anything to do with the plot of Yakuza.
"Date is still miserable"
Idk why but that shit always makes me laugh

Majima’s wearing his eyepatch in the wrong eye
Because he told director, his another eye has poor eyesight
Excuse me there's an incorrect statement you made in this! You said Kiryu murdered 10 of Majima's men; however Kiryu has ACTUALLY never killed anyone.
