I read this comment before watching the video, and was confused. Then I started watching and the easel set up on the residential street corner with the seascape painting struck me as extremely hilarious for a second.
The lawns turned out perfect! After painting for 40 years, I still struggle with mixing 'greens'..Great painting! I enjoy 'off the beaten track' motifs...this was a winner!
Thank you Michael for sharing your knowledge and understanding of the painting process. I love how you take the everyday and develop it into something extraordinary.
This is great! I know you always say that you’re trying to create a convincing pattern of light and shadow, and that is exactly what you have here. It has such a realistic sunlit look. Even before you pointed out the cars, they jumped out at me and I was noting just how well they conveyed the idea of cars with strong sunlight reflecting off them, yet they are rendered in such a simple way. I also love the overall composition and color palette in this painting.
Michael, as usual your work turns an otherwise mundane scene into a very good painting.. I envy your ability to see colors in places that I don’t see. Like when you saw red in the street? That’s always been a strong point for you. 🌴from Plant City, Fl. 🌴
Wow, my brain had a tough time making the transition from ocean scene to street scene. I need to watch this several more times until your lesson sinks in! Thanks for the challenge!
Love just the road over the ocean, thought that looked really cool! Kind of twilight zone. LOL. Love your work and videos lean a lot from them. Thanks!!
Amazing painting, sir! I love it! I just love these kind of paintings as well. They are fantastic! Especially in your case. Painting over an old painting seems to be pretty difficult and confusing. But not for you. For you, it's just a piece of cake. Great job! I think your shapes are perfect! Very nice town! Greetings from the EU!

I've been binging your videos lately and am really benefitting from seeing how you actually apply your art principles to your paintings. I'm just itching for it to warm up enough here in Canada to get back out en plein air and follow your advice in my own endeavours! Thanks for all the content. I've learned so much and have really enjoyed following your adventures.
This turned out amazing, I loved the vibrancy of the painting and your talk on breaking down shapes. It is great to emphasize and is strong advice to anyone. I’m currently going through a rough time so thank you for always being awesome Michael!
You are such a great observer of light and shape. It inspires me to not get bogged down in details. Also your color mixing! As a new artist, I go through so much paint trying to get something that feels close to right. You also remind me inspiration is everywhere if you squint.
It is a wonderful painting. Portraying a nice, comfortable neighborhood. No cliche. Makes suburban living look comfortable in the best sense of the word.
Again...WOW..I always watching your videos on sunday evening. Love your way of painting! And telling about it. Would be fine to publish a book of your art? Would like to buy.
Impressive result! The composition had so much going on and you made it into a really nice painting in such little time. You’re teaching me a lot there! Inspiring!
A big reason paintings over paintings could seem dull is that the underlayer absorbs oil from the paint. Kinda like putting oil paint on cardboad does. It could be a good idea to let a layer of whatever oil you're using soak in for a bit before painting.
When painting over an old painting, like I did in this video, the panel absorbs little or no oil. Actually the white panels are much more absorbent and yet the colors seem brighter. The colors seem brighter when painting over a white canvas because there's white beneath them. Many of the colors are semi-transparent. When painting over an old painting I'm usually painting over dark colors which mutes the new colors a bit.
Wow - change of subject matter. My initial worry would have been the amount of road that formed part of your view although, i agree, the curved route of the road into the distance is interesting. The cars are fantastic! Just by suggesting elements of the cars they become believable - i need to practice that. Your techniques change an ordinary suburban scene into an interesting painting. I need to push saturation as well - i think on location its easy to dumb down colours when i think you need to emphasise them. Brilliant as ever - when does the surfing come back? Is it out-of-season?
Thanks Andrew. Yes, this particular #10 is very versatile and it's about as big as my brush washer can handle. It's become my main brush after the scrub in.
Is the Rosemary and Co. Ivory brush the long bristle one? By the way I have been binge watching some more of your videos today and came across the road trip video. It looks dull because of the difference in white balance. If you work in the shade it will help with seeing correct saturation. All Homes Landscape Artist of the year.

Would be super funny if someone walked by before you started, thinking you just painted a seascape 😊
