John was a treasure and loved and respected. I was lucky enough to catch his quartet at Smoke in Manhattan when they were touring to support the 39 Steps album (which is a masterpiece). I am a pretty competent musician and I have to point out that seeing those guys play I never enjoyed a pianist more than Marc Copland that night. His playing is flawless, and his voicings were truly sublime. And Joey Baron was totally unreal on drums. He coaxed such amazing sounds and dynamics out of a relatively small kit. I went home that night feeling like a man divided down the middle. So in awe of their abilities, and so grateful I have enough skill and knowledge to recognize what they accomplished, but distraught that I can't do it personally. I struggle with that daily, but I will always remember that night, and the ticket was much too cheap for what they left on the stage.
