- We are high above Rich Mountain in West Virginia covering one of the earliest battles of the American Civil War. The Battle of Rich Mountain, fought on July 11, 1861, was a major early victory for Union forces that propelled Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan into overall Union command. Garry Adelman is joined by Richard Wolfe of the Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation for an exploration of the Rich Mountain battlefield.
Look for our numerous videos on RUclips over the next week, and special thanks to all the donors who helped make this trip possible!
Big victory for Rosecrans here... helped get McC a huge promotion too
Have visited this site some years ago. This great video helps me to better understand what occurred here. Thanks to you all.
I’m in the area once a year for a reunion, many times been around the quarry then to the field. Sorry to see the road now gated, found the best fossils up there. You never talked about and wounded if you know about all the chiseled names and accounts left behind the rocks across the way?
Went there 20 years ago. This helped understand better. The farmhouse mentioned but not shown still had bullet holes eberywhere. Or thats what we thought. It was on the Northside mainly and that could have been grape shot from the cannon fire when the confederates still posessed the cannon.
It’s not stanton Virginia it’s staunton. The Staunton turnpike goes from Staunton Virginia to Parkersburg wv. Lots of battles happen in this state. My family members were engaged in many of them. One dying at Antietam and the others whereabouts were unknown. Thanks for this. A lot of people don’t know anything about it
I just learned that my great-great grandfather was in this battle as part of the Ohio 19th company D. And even though I am from Minnesota, I now live less than an hour from Rich Mountain. Can’t wait to visit this site! Thanks for the video!
I was there on the 150th anniversary of the battle. It was evening, and a fog was overtaking the battlefield. There was dead silence. The scene was quite eerie.
Glad to see my home state getting recognized for its fascinating history and major contributions to the Civil War!
Its about time
Thank you so much, Mr. Wolfe. I'm really enjoying this series.
What month was this taped. Numerous sounds of gun fire in background.
November
@@AmericanBattlefieldTrust I wonder if you could ask Gary if he heard gunshots during the filming or if we have EVP on tape.
I had an ancestor from Indiana that fought under Thomas Morris at Rich mountain, next time I'm in West Virginia I'll have to check this place out!
1st West Virginia Volunteer Infantry reenactor here
Great program. Seeing the gound has enabled me to visualize what transpired!
Visited there in about 2019. I was very disappointed in the vandalism.
P.S. I can't find Droop Mountain in your videos.
I wasn't.Sherman did it.😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣Ha,ha, 😂
My ancestor Col. Watson Westfall was the leader of the 133rd Militia of the Upshur County Blues. Would love to meet and bring my son to meet Mr Wolfe. My Son and I have metal detected several Morgan's Raiders sites in Ohio and he found a bayonet on a farm outside of Salineville, Ohio. Looking at taking him into WV to have him learn our history there.
I found several ancient Civil War pennies dated 1962 with my metal detector.
They say 'COLD HARBOR' was the first Trench Warfare..was not Petersburg Va. a better example..I was there in 1966, the rebel side was a shopping mall back then..
You got it wrong. The Civil War ended in 1965 so how can you be on the southern side in 1966?
Great explanation!! Thanks, Garry!!!
David Hart may or may not have been a "loyal" Union man, but he was also paid $100 in gold to lead Union troops up the mountain and had to leave Randolph county very quickly and ended up dying of illness in Kentucky.
Must be little truth in that. I heard very same story.
The story telling skills are amazing
If I recall, there is a tribute carved into the large rock behind you to a fallen Union solder, I found this to be quite sobering.
Please tell me there is gonna be a video about Cheat Mountain
Yes & Camp Allegheny mt. Outpost. Too. Very important spot. That is a very hard place find. But very important too.
Wow, you need to cover that mike with a "dead cat". The wind drowns out your voice
Here first! Love battlefield trust! Like I said on Facebook, thank you for coming to Kentucky! It's just me josh 😁😂
Pale horseman please ride back into the Bible
I'd say in his day that old guy was the whip on civil war history....now....just kinda painful to watch
Who you calling old?
Has the foundation done a video of Lee’s retreat from Gettysburg?
It sounds like deer hunting season has just opened up, you can hear shotguns going off almost during the whole duration of the program...keep your heads down boys !!!
Just target practice for another civil war after this botched election.
WVU has the best shooting team for a reason.
