I am born in Australia...so Christmas is celebrated on the beach or in the backyard... having a BBQ. I lived in the Netherlands and that is the opposite. Cold and dark, hoping for snow or ice. Been to many Christmas markets in Germany and they really are fantastic. Love your podcasts. Greetings from Lizzy from Australia 🦘.
Here's my recipe for Glühwein (mulled wine) for you and anybody else who hates the stuff that's sold in grocery stores: 1 organic orange 750 ml (= 1 bottle) decent red wine 2 cinnamon sticks 2 star anises 3 - 4 cloves 60 g brown sugar 50 ml rum (optional) Peel the orange thinly, without the white stuff. Squeeze the rest for the juice. Take a large enough pot, add all ingredients, and bring to a moderate heat, about 70° C/160° F. Do not let boil! Let simmer at low heat for about 20-30 Minutes. Extract the orange peel and spices, serve and enjoy. 🎉
2:10 A so called Christmas pyramid. They were invented and produced in the Ore Mountains south of Dresden (before cheap imitations from elsewhere flooded the market). 8:15 typical Ore Mountains artwork.
Regarding Krampus: Since Austria was once a province of Bavaria, before it became its own duchy (and then expanded by taking over neighboring duchies), it is rather irrelevant in what part of the Alpine region he originated.
Merry Christmas, Joel. Me and my friends enjoy the christmas market when its cold and we have some glühwein to have a relaxed chat at the end of the year with most of our plans finished.
Hello Joel! May I just say that you're looking even better and brighter than ever, today? Merry Christmas to you and yours! German Christmas Markets are quite a thing in the UK too, you know, I suppose they have been for the last 20 or so years in fact - and we too have a chance to purchase their crafts and food and drink - especially Bratwurst, Creamy Hot Chocolate and Gluhwein! One of the longest-established and best-known is here in Edinburgh, as part of a larger Christmas Festival including funfair rides for adults and kids, outdoor ice-rinks and much more - and it just so happens that I might be going out to meet a couple of friends there, later today! My Christmas plans were basically blown-apart this morning when my mother rang me to say she was too ill to travel and so, could I go over there and stay a few nights instead...! So, I'm just trying to work the logistics given that my scooter doesn't really travel outside of Edinburgh because it's too big to be taken on public transport, yet I can scarcely walk more than a few yards without it; and I can't drive a car, either! I think tomorrow by bus, return with a lighter suitcase on Boxing Day, then possibly repeat for the weekend - well, unless circumstances change again. Her doctor did say she could be admitted to hospital, but who wants that, especially over Christmas? Anyway, you take care of yourself - it's so lovely to see you looking so well and in control of your life - well, wine not withstanding,eh?!!
X-mas is something different where I am coming from…. I am living in Northern part of Germany and in my life Christmas was always the time for social gatherings, meeting friends and time-by-time selected family members…. consequently not the Family Event of year…. of course, since kids grew up the spirit of X-mas changed a lot and the time of end of year became a period of stopping your wheel and find peace of mind…. Enjoyment comes from sharing time with others - mostly unknown to us to open our mind for new things and to delete the habits by listening to unknown perspectives. This goes so much easier because of the intention to breath, inhale and adopt something different to make the dark days of winter a preparation of future… when light is back on earth (just to get it right: In the North of Germany Dec25th called a day only from 08:43 AM to 3:52 PM). The most popular days for family in the Northern part of Germany is Eastern… This is a time where family will be celebrated …. and from Friday to Monday we rent a hotel for all 66 members of family to collect relatives from all over world… it might be that in seafarer‘s families X-mas is generally a time of work… and it is much easier to get all done to be together in Spring. So, it turns to the situation that gifts, wishes and peaceful time is not December 25th but somewhere in April…. But this may belong to our set-up having family in Germany, Denmark, Philippines, Australia, Chile, Croatia and The Netherlands… ….nevertheless, we consider X-mas a special season…. but the walk of entire family on Easter Sunday Morning along the rough North Sea coast and to get mind refreshed by strong but salty smelling wind is so much more to me than candles on the table…. in dark days…
I think Christmas Markets are also very popular in Germany because the smaller in smaller towns or villages are a meeting point, were you met old friends again. There is also the fact that some marriages started at a Christmas Market with the help of some Glühwein.
Happy Christmas from Austria! Thanks for your finde ans tough approaches to Europe and the european satire too 👍. May I recommand you 3 further top names? Merry Christmas, Joel! One thing you need to know is that Christmas markets in big cities are veeeeeery crowded! I advice you not to go there on a Saturday. Also check out some smaller Christmas markets which exist in every bigger town and also in the surroundings. Often they are way more cozy.
They do Christmas markets like this in most UK cities now too! You can get all the traditional German market offerings, as well as regional crafts and food offerings. Gluhwein is available in most supermarkets here too!
Hi Jps, i would recomand you too watch something about the Reeperbahn in Hamburg Germany. A Street with a lot of Clubs and legal prostitution. Great video, keep up the good work. Greetings from Germany
if you want a real, german traditional New Years Eve treat, watch the original German version of 'Dinner for one', it's on RUclips, from NDR, the version with the white tablecloth, originally its coming from England , so it's in English. If you find an other version of it, it comes from Switzerland, but it leaks some subtle and hilarious British humor, that makes the German Version sooooo good. Merry Christmas and I love your reactions😀

I grew up in Dresden, I love the Striezelmarkt, especially the Kräppelchen. I now live in northern Germany, if you have any questions please contact me. Whether it's the highway, swimming pool or school, maybe I can help you. However, not for long, I will be leaving Germany in the next 2 years. I'm drawn further south...

These Christmas pyramids work by the warm air rising from the candles moving the wings. If this pyramid is now, for example, near an air conditioning system, the warm air becomes confused and no longer reaches the wings.
you can prepare "Glühwein" mulled wine by yourself, very easily. 👌😋😋 the original "ginger bread" from nuremberg, imo, the best you can eat during christmas time.

Watching this in the southern hemisphere, it's summer. Very different. It's midnight right now and 28 degrees c. So A/C on and Christmas lunch will be salads and ham etc. But the break is sun beach and nature. Awesome. We all get a couple of weeks off work.
Happy belated birthday 🎶❤️👍 Thanks for sharing from Berlin 😉 Though I must admit the erotic Xmas market here was new to me... Shout-out to Hamburg, we liberals up north keep the flag flying 😉🗽
That's true, especially the big ones. But at the big ones you pay 15000 per month If you sell food or more expensive If you sell Glühwein. But yes, it's a business. That's how a "Market" works 😂 But it's also a Lot of Tradition. We have also "medieval christmas Markets".
I also recommend the Christmas market videos about germany by Deana & Phil @DeanaandPhil The Christmas market in Bremen has unexpectedly received a very good rating (4,79/5 Points 2022) and, as I heard on the radio earlier, many foreign tourists are said to have travelled to the Christmas market despite the storm and bad weather. To sum up, no matter what the weather is like, you have to visit a Christmas market. For me, it's a small Christmas tradition to visit the Christmas market at least once and eat a bratwurst.

Indeed, Krampus is a local thing, in Western Germany this tradition is completly unknown.
Merry Christmas to you too Joel! And Frohe Weihnachten since we are checking these beautiful markets!
