The Green Man | All-Seeing & Ever-Growing

- He is called the Green Man, a mysterious being long associated with nature, and the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. His face is everywhere, covered in leaves and foliage with eyes ever staring, as if peering into your very soul. Though he is widespread across Europe, and more ancient than Rome, little is known of this figure, who he really is or what his purpose is. Could he be some ancient god of life and nature? Is he an abstract concept of the natural world given a human face? Is he just an artistic motif that has been glorified in recent times?

Perhaps the idea of "The Green Man" was inspired by the common observation of people seeing faces in various forms of flora, from the trunks of trees to the leaves of shrubbery and, of course, flowers looking like numerous faces if not collectively forming one face. Maybe, because ancient humans saw these faces just as readily then as we do today, those ancient peoples assumed that the surrounding flora was always watching them via these faces.

My first contact with the green man was an illustrated book about mythologic creatures. I still own that book, it's very dear to me.
That's wonderful. What's the name of that book?
Reminds me of the Green Giant. A mascot of frozen vegetables.
Wow that is so true! I agree 👍💯
I just came across this video and I thought the same thing lol
The Green Man is one I've always been intrigued by. I was taught He's the Goddess's Consort. She gives life and He gives strength.
I’ve seen him 😁
I'm interested....which goddess?
I ask because I had this feeling, but was never taught about it. So I'm interested to hear more...
I have seen this face on a mushroom trip. It told me to stop looking inwards, that I was the eyes of the one, and I should look out around me at the wonders he creates.
🥷🏽
How many grams did you take
I had a pretty intense experience with him on DMT. I met a lot of deities I knew nothing of prior.
@@jeffemossI'm interested to hear about it, if you would like to share.
There’s also the Leshy from Slavic folklore, and I’ve heard that the Green Knight from the tale of Gawain and the Green Knight is also the Green Man. Maybe Merlin himself could’ve even been influenced or inspired by this Green man.
tales of king arthur would definately be old enough. there's so much supernatural events happen at camelot, having stories about the old gods would make a lot of sense.
You have the right idea
That poem at the end is amazing. Every time I hear about the Green Night I think of nature itself and Ireland to. As we get close to Spring and we came from celebrating St Patrick's day and going on to Easter this was a perfect vid. I also all the artwork that depict him very magical.
The Basis for Swamp Thing of DC Comics.
What a wonderful mystery, I just love this channel so much.
I was also delighted to see Flora mentioned. She's an important goddess in the Dark Parables computer games, and I'm facinated to find out she's from Roman mythology.
Currently, do you have any episodes about the greek mythology of a queen named Lamia who became a serpent?
Check this out!

@@MythologyUnleashed thanks!
I needed this. I want Spring
Fascinating! I've always found the Green Man interesting, and it's so interesting to see what a wide array of interpretations there are!
You did a really good job on the video. Also I like that you had the poem in it as well thank you 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Is the Green Man at all related to the Green Knight of Arthurian lore? I wonder if there's a connection there in some form, where the Green Knight was created from the cultural idea of the Green Man.
They are both green - and that's about it.
But the Green Man has only been that colour since Lady Raglin gave him that name in 1939.
This was exquisitely & brilliantly done. Thanks for sharing this intriguing figure of lore with us. Have a wonderful day everyone.🌹💜🌍
Never heard of this figure before, but I’m glad he took role of my Celtic ancestry.
This has became one of my favorite channels
My local renaissance fair actually is based around the green man and an entirely made up world with different clans and peoples
The green man was once a huge help and get the realm in balance until he was slain by the dominion leaders
Years later the rest of the resistance went against the dominion and the green man returned from the dead ans changed the tide of war and brought back balance to Kool’ain
See? Always something new to learn. That’s why I’m a subscriber.
The Green Man is the guy that sells me weed.
Thats the Jolly Green Giant duh 🙄
I always thought the green man was the high lord of the fairies
I have never heard of the Green Man.
You guys all have the right idea you're not seeing the strings. Good luck
I’ve been gone too long. I’ve always known him to be the king of spriggans. An I’ve carved many a wood spirit as they are known, either by request or by an unexplained need to make one, especially when the snow melts and the plants take hold again.
I'm surprised they didn't mention his most "recent" incarnation of the Green Knight.
Wonder if the green man is the idea behind swamp thing in DC comics?
Honest to my god I have seen the green man in the tangiteroria forestry in New Zealand.I was so scared we took off on the quad and he was following,He was all lighten up florescent and he was really tall like a giant,He just randumly appeared out of nowhere at this big tree
So, wait; is this Tom Bombadil, or the Green Giant? (Ho ho ho!)
The Green Man is a common motif among the inked.
Al-Kadhir is also a green man.
Who is Al-Kadhir?
Anyone else here ever read the book "A Monster Calls"? If I remember right, The Green Man is the titular monster.
The green man is the main villain in the horror movie men
I have seen the green man in West Virginia 1992
Details please.
@@crystald2872 I was in the woods and his face came out of a tree like living loves a face . There was 3 or 4 females in the tree also just faces of leaves . He smiled at me and started laughing and then the females started laughing so I started laughing this lasted for about 3 or 5 minutes then they were gone.
I thought he was just a guy named Charlie from Philadelphia
I love green man always been interested in it. But I'm 4 minutes in and you haven't gotten to anything other than it had many names. That's a long intro
22 seconds before starts. Imo Don't need it anymore,
Can you please do a video about spirit animals?
Please make a video talking about leprechauns.
Mesoamarican flower goddess??? Please
Is Tom Bombadil a representation from Tolkien's universe?
We would say that Treebeard and the Ents would be closer to the Green Man than Tom Bombadil!
Eyyy my man ol' leafy boy lol

Ah Tom Bombadil must be based at least someone what on the Greenman.
was lord of the rings based on norse mythology? green man could come from there.
The world of Tolkien is heavily influenced by a LOT of mythology and folklore. Norse, Celtic, Biblical, Greek, Arthurian, Roman, Grimm Fairy Tales, Medieval poetry, as well as his own personal experiences!

Reminds me of the mysterious Islamic figure of Al Khidr (The Green One)
