  • The Villanova Center for Liberal Education hosted the Carlyle Studies Conference on the subject of "Thomas Carlyle Resartus: Reappraising Carlyle for Our Times" during the summer of 2007. The conference gathered together Carlyle scholars from all around the globe. One of the goals of the conference was to reassess the contributions the writings of Thomas Carlyle can make for this generation's college classrooms. The conference was the inception for the book, Thomas Carlyle Resartus: Reappraising Carlyle's Contribution to the Philosophy of History, Political Theory, and Cultural Criticism, co-edited by Marylu Hill and Paul Kerry.
Dr. Hill and Dr. Kerry will discuss how important Thomas Carlyle was to his Victorian contemporaries, survey briefly his oeuvre, moot why he has fallen out of favor, and explain how their book contributes to the new interest in Carlyle's writing.
Paul E. Kerry, Ph.D. is an associate professor of History at Brigham Young University and a visiting fellow at Cambridge University. Marylu Hill, Ph.D. is the Director of the Villanova Center of Liberal Education.
