Deciding between the different types and brands of water softener salt can be confusing and your choice will influence:
• how effectively your softener will regenerate
• how often you will need to clean out your brine tank.
• the amount of sodium that ends up in your soft water
• the water softener 'total cost of ownership'
• how often you'll need to clean your water softener injector
• May not be compatible with your water softener.
Let's compare 4 popular kinds of salt and a popular salt alternative, remember all of the salts will work in virtually all water softeners except as noted and it does not matter what brand of water softener salt but the type of salt you are using.
Windsor Select Plus - Rock Salt - This is the cheapest and also the dirtiest salt. All of the impurities in the salt will stay in the brine tank or get sucked into the water softener's injector. You will need to clean out the brine tank and injector much more often if you use this salt, but it's far less likely to salt clog. If you have a Viqua Sanitizer water softener, this is the only type of water softener salt that is compatible.
Windsor Rust Remover Pellets - These are designed for use with well water that has a high iron content and you don't have a dedicated iron filter. This salt has an additive that combats issues caused by iron & rust and can remove 15 times more iron than plain salt. Rust Remover also reduces rust build-up in your softener and helps your softener run more efficiently and last longer. If your water softener is dealing with more than 1 ppm of iron this is your best choice.
Sifto Crystal Plus with Resin Clean - Sifto says this is a "high-purity compacted salt that keeps softener operating at peak efficiency. Proprietary Resin Clean additive extends the life of the water softener by cleaning the resin beads", which I believe. I do not like or recommend this salt, the problem is that this is the most likely salt to cause a salt clog, so if you decide to use this stuff, you will need to check out my video on how to remove a salt clog from your water softener at some point.
Windsor Potassium Chloride Salt Alternative - which is a sodium alternative to soften water. This product is 99% sodium-free, therefore reducing sodium levels in softened water and chlorides discharged into the environment. This product also provides the essential plant nutrient potassium to the ecosystem. Sounds great but this product costs almost 4 times what water softener salt costs, is only 80% as efficient as salt and it also tends to salt clog. If you really want to eliminate sodium from your softened water a Reverse Osmosis drinking water system is a much better way than using Potassium Chloride.
So what do I suggest? Windsor System Saver II - These pellets are formulated to guarantee 99.7% pure salt which ultimately means you will not need to clean out the brine tank or injector for many years and due to the pellet design they are much less likely to salt clog. It also has a water softener resin cleaner mixed in so you don't need to add it. If you have less than 1 ppm of iron and don't have a Viqua Sanitizer water softener this is your best choice. If you have more than 1 ppm of iron get the Rust Remover salt for your family.

I use Diamond Crystal Solar Naturals Water Softener Salt Crystals. However, I still see water spots and water marks on my shower door. Do you know if I need to change the setting on my water softener?

I know this is an old video but wanted to comment in hopes you see it and can answer.
I've recently left city water to well water and have hard/iron water. The house came with a water boss 900 that works quite well. I have 15g hardness with 3ppm iron so I run it at 30 setting per manual.
Thanks to your videos I've learned a ton and recently learned I need to clean the media every few months for the iron to not foul.
We're currently using a rust defender salt from Morton that works pretty good.
Do you think I should also periodically apply iron out to the brine well on top of the rust defense salt use?

Yes, we still reply to all videos. I would defenitely use iron out once a year to help with the cleaner in the salt. But, I should also mention that 3 parts per million of iron is more than the water softener can handle long term. I would suggest you consider an iron filter before the water softener like one of these waterestore.com/products/hum-chemical-free-iron-sulphur-manganese-fok-filter-1-5-cube and clean or replace the the injector in your water softener at least once per year . @@water_estore we have rather limited space in this utility room with no other spaces that work for the extra equipment. We might be able to squeeze that in, and will have to measure and look up the dims to double check.
Do you think replacing the water boss 900 with the water boss 900-IF would solve or still not strong enough on the 3ppm?
I was told that i should use the rock salt because the pellets end up accumulating at the bottom and hardening like cement. Your thoughts?
good question. If you constantly keep way too much salt in your brine tank that could happen but it's extremely rare. Hello I want to switch to potassium chloride. Do I need to completely empty the brine tank of salt ? Before adding the potassium? Thank you for your help
No need, just add it to the salt. But since it is only 80% as efficient you will need to increase the hardness settings by 25%

Yes, absolutely! Different regions have different brands. You want one that looks like an oblong pill or lozenge.
Sodium chloride evaporated pellets. Although they are a bit more costly than solar and rock salt, they pay for themselves by preventing expensive and unnecessary repairs. Sodium chloride is also cheaper and more efficient than potassium chloride, but potassium chloride evaporated pellets or cubes are the best choice for those households that must limit their sodium intake as much as possible.

Yes, absolutely. That replaced the Windsor System Saver salt.

It is almost identical. You could likely not tell the difference.
Can I run my softener without salt to see if it works properly?
Sure you can but it won't soften the water and eventually it will clog with calcium and magnesium
You mentioned that some salts are incompatible with some softeners, but never explained that. How do I know what I can and can't use?
Viqua makes a softener that supposedly removes sulphur. Those ones use only rock Salt. All other that I know of can use any salt.
I live in Texas and I don't think we have access to Windsor products. Would any "System Saver" salt be just as good as the Windsor System Saver II? Thank you.

And the reason to not use normal table salt is that it contains a lot of dirt?
Water softeners can use either Sodium Chloride or Potassium Chloride as a regenerant, only the Sodium Chloride is salt based. I have never used table salt but it should work. Rock salt has too much dirt in it.

Will adding a whole house water filtration system in combination with a water softener system reduce the amount of salt needed by the water softener system?
Great question! Only if your water source is well water with iron in it and you are using the water softener to remove the iron. If you are on a water source without, like city water it will not make any difference.

@@mikefa5891 Most water filters do not filter out calcium or magnesium (but they do filter out a zillion other things, many of which are indeed beneficial to water taste or smell to be removed).
I use diamond crystal solar naturals salt crystal. I noticed that during regenerating my tank gets full of water and when it’s done the salt stays dirty. Is this normal?
Likely there is some dirt on the salt. Since the water absorbs the salt but not the dirt, the dirt gets left behind.

Good question! Every salt is compatible with Culligan water softeners but they recommend their own salt which is similar to rock salt. Not sure why they would recommend a salt with the impurities still in it?

The setting is based on how hard your water is and how much iron or manganese is present. You will need to have your water tested to find out.

My water became way too slippery. TDS meter reads at 200 (after the acid neutralizer and water softener) with high PH of 9+). TDS read after the RO system cut it to 13.
The TDS reads in the house are higher than the row well water. Im confused. soft/slippery water should have low TDS read.....
Good question. TDS increases after softening. Softening works on ion exchange but since it is not 100% efficient the TDS is usually about 100% higher after the softener. Both hard and soft water can have a medium or high TDS.
@@water_estore oh... but if so how can one determine if he has soft or hard water afterwards? also, the TDS meter guides us to check the efficiency of the water filtration system and purity of the water. How can we use it after the softener?
Sean you need to test the water for hardness, not TDS. Hardness test determines if the water softener is working or not. TDS just tells you the total dissolved solids amount in parts per million.

My iron filter makes a loud bang noise when regenerating any idea why?
Probably the valves shifting into next cycle. Mine are fairly loud when they shift.

Lucy Savery ideally indoors to keep away humidity but you can store outdoors and cover with plastic.
