I have used Helly Hanson brand clothes for 15 years and can vouch for the quality. You do pay a little extra for the brand itself though. I have used their socks, thermal shirts and leggings, rain pants and coat, gloves and winter hats. I still have all of it (aside from the socks) because they are still in good shape even after a lot of use. I purchased a Helly Hanson Hyrdopower pro series rain jacket about 5 years ago and its still going strong. It is a little heavier duty than the Odin Minimalist but was only $100. The collar is stiff enough to stand straight and is lined with fleece. The hood is large and adjustable in two places to get it snug in high winds. Ben, I first saw you when I was looking for a good tarp and came across your video for the Aqua Quest King Kamo. It convinced me to buy it so I subscribed.
After watching your Black Diamond Jacket video I purchased 2 jackets from them. One of the jackets was this ultra light jacket (like the one in this video) called the Alpine Start Hoody. I use it for a wind breaker and rain coat on top of a light sweater or long sleeve shirt. really love the jacket. I bought it on sale for $35 USD. Thanks for that Black Diamond video by the way. The other jacket I ended up getting was the Stance Belay Hoody.
That is a sweet Jacket man, very compact and would be very nice to carry. Thanks for sharing man . I have a Helly Hansen rain jacket i took out in Vancouver. It was a tough jacket and worked amazing in pouring rain.
Nice review! And you are correct you will get what you pay for. All it takes is one outing where you get wet and start shivering which is a clear warning that you are on the verge of hypothermia and you won't worry about price anymore. You will also not worry about weight as much either. When it comes to rain gear I don't worry about price or weight.
That is a very nice jacket. And you are right. Less weight means more money. But nobody 2 weeks into a thru hike says "I wish I had spent less money on heavier gear"
+Living Survival The odin is also their best Goretex / Hellytech shell, about a $600 shell. It is the best shell in their recreational line, not including their Professional line that is not advertised or available to the public.
Thanks for the review and comments based upon personal experience. I was interested to see if it has pit zips and it was shown that it does not as it is really minimalist.
You should check out the rain jackets sold at Costco for $50 with pants, I think the brand is Paradox or something like that. My brother has the Odin and I would say the Parodox is of similar, if not equal quality. The downside is that it doesn't breathe as well, but at 1/4 the price it's a trade-off that is well worth it. I use one of mine as an overcoat for motorcycle rides and it has survived a 6 hour downpour at 70-80mph, several other long downpours and daily commuting in NW WA state for about a year now.
OutdoorGearLab rates the Marmot Essence as the best rain jacket in this space @ $150. It's breathability is pretty amazing, I've regularly used it as a running jacket. I also have the OR Helium 2 as well and like it fine. If you'd like to go a little lighter still try the Berghaus rain smock @ roughly 2.6 ounces.
Fuuuuck yeah man. I live in Northern WV, and me and my hiking/camping partner are going out here in mid-June to finish a 10-day trek on the AT. Wait until you get out there buddy, its AMAZING! I'm hoping we can count of some in the field, actual hiking the AT gear reviews from you...?!?
Living Survival bought one from Nordstrom Rack. They only have orange but the price is good. Apparently, it's a seasonal item, not available year round. Nice jacket, well worth the extra effort to find one.
Living where you do, wouldn't you rather walk the PCT out west? Better views. Also I have the Kuhl light weight rain jacket and it breathes great. 1/2 the price but heavier with pockets. Always great videos Ben
$200 for a rain jacket is just ridiculous. buy 5 frog togs for half the price and they will last you twice as long. I've had the same frog tog rain jacket for years and it's held up. just a stupid high price for such a seasonal piece of gear
+Derek Dahl frog togs will certainly not last twice as long. I've been through a few pairs of those. For those that count grams they are also much too heavy. the price is certainly right though. thanks for watching.
+Living Survival I gotta disagree with you sir, frog togs do last and I mean at $30 a pop you could fill a pack with them compared to the price for this jacket. but seriously I've had the same frog tog jacket for over 2 years, granted it doesn't rain much here but still, it lasts packing and unpacking time and time again. there's just NO justifying the price for this jacket. period.
No thanks Ben... I can get something a lot cheaper with comparable quality. Wow! ... pay for the name why don't we? Thanks for your review however... I'm sure some will find it useful and considerate.

As unstable as the weather is in Norway at the moment, I really need this. Thanks for the review!
+ArmoredGaming thanks for watching.
Good review, thanks for all the excellent gear you make us aware of.

+Lance Lenoir good point.

+Survival On Purpose right. a little overpriced though for sure.

+george licea nice,. yes I have some gear i mind that i will show.
Wow, cant believe how small that packs down! Is it fully waterproof? I've had a few "waterproof" jackets before that leaked badly.
Gonna put your video on my Minamalist Survivor Magazine site. It will be a long term survival item.

Looks like it's no longer available anywhere
hmm, they probably have one similar.
Living Survival bought one from Nordstrom Rack. They only have orange but the price is good. Apparently, it's a seasonal item, not available year round. Nice jacket, well worth the extra effort to find one.
Can anyone tell me how this compares to the asics packable jacket?

+David Barclay Michigan? Much closer to the AT.

+MrTangent kifaru urban zippy
Is it gortex? Marmots $200 jacket is gortex.
+prepper 53 prepper 53 nope but protects from rain and not as heavy as gortex.
All that water and no fishing pole
shocked at the price.
Ah yes I can see that it's cold.
