    I visited a large military tug when they were in town and had an open house. It was a pretty awesome boat. It seemed like a waterborn bulldozer in construction.
    That was also the occasion where i learned that the us navy surprisingly uses civilian employees in addition to military personnel.

    To all those who are wondering about "towing from the stern," please read the caption by the "publisher.' It clearly states: "Tugboats (plural) ...etc." As I mentioned before, it's not unusual to have tug at the bow and another at the stern to help maneuver. And here is a reply from what I presume was one of the crew (RED h.c.): "Hey, we weren't towing backwards. We actually were doing so called 'heading control'. So we were laying still and holding the big vessel, Armada, in position. Wind and waves where coming from the back. So, hope that should give you some clearing. Best regards, Jan." And the video clearly shows TWO tugs at 6:45 and beyond.

    • @JanDootjes
      @JanDootjes  5 лет назад +5

      That's the ALP Centre, a sister vessel of the ship were I made this video from. She isn't tugging sternways, she is laying still and the waves slam her from the back.

  • @1oldmariner
    @1oldmariner 6 лет назад +6

    Seagoing tugs and rescue vessels are the most seaworthy surface ships around. I did not see the tow being towed "backward." What I think I saw was a SECOND tug making fast to the stern in order to help maneuver the tow into port Anyway, it is not unusual to tow "backward" if the bow is compromised because of damage, or whatever. The forces exerted to the bow and/or the stern are tremendous and the tug will make fast to the strongest point. But as I said, I did not see that during the voyage. But I have been wrong before.

    • @ralphaverill2001
      @ralphaverill2001 6 лет назад +2

      I think the tug was towing "backward" because there was a following sea and the waves were moving faster than the tug at that point. That is why tugs are so seaworthy; they can't outrun conditions. They have to slog through it all and take it.

      Define "seaworthy". For pure heavy weather survival they're far from ideal, given the tall superstructure, large windows and utter lack of freeboard astern.

      Engine room takes some space, tanks take some space, mud tanks take some space, steering gear take some space, shaft lines take some space, ballast tanks take some space.
      In addition, all according to class, areas are separated by watertight compartments.

    Dumb question from a land lover, why is the tug so far from the rig? Just asking for a friend.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

    • @JanDootjes
      @JanDootjes  4 года назад +10

      The distance between the tugs and the rig is when towing about 1500 metres. The long distance will create a nice buffer, the tow wire will hang loose in a 'U' shape in the water. If the wire length will be to short, the wire will be straight and it will create peak loads on the wire and causes shocks feelable in the vessel. The more wire paid out, the smoother the ride, especially in heavy weather. Hope it makes some send, All the best and regards from Holland, Jan
