For 2014, the Touring and Grand Touring trims come standard with a 2.5 liter engine, with 184hp and 185ft lbs. I just bought one, and it really transforms the car.
@mikern10 - great feedback. Do you have a camcorder or decent recording device. I have an idea on how we can feature your feedback in a future video? Email me at EverymanDriver@gmail.com and we'll talk. - Dave
After a bit more research I realized the discrepancy--the 2013 CX5 came with only the 155hp engine, while for 2014 they're offering the 185hp engine on the touring and grand touring trims. You guys were right and I made the mistake. RUclips! I MADE THE MISTAKE! haha thought I would make that clear. Keep up the good work guys. your review is great. Hopefully i will be picking one up soon. Cheers, KCCO.
I think the Mazda CX-5 is a great buy for the compact crossover segment. Yeah it may not have the best resale value, or power liftgate, or best in class horsepower, but it's naturally aspirated so you know that the motor will last forever. Mazda makes a reliable car and they are really like the underdogs. When you say crossover, everyone thinks RAV 4 and CR-V. But ultimately, there are better offerings out their now I think. And this is a great buy for all the equipment and efficiency you receiv
Hrmm.. while I appreciate manufacturers want to show off the best of the best and of course having the top of the line model, you can show all the features possible.. I find reviews of top of the line models to be less relevant than those of the mid-tier models and they still leave me wondering how the model that I might actually buy/lease is going to be right for me or not..
Good grief- it’s pretty easy, just know it’s just bells & whistles & easy to discern. He literally lost the adds at beginning of vid. Look, engine, wheels are same.
Thank you Alex. Your comments and videos are really helpful. I will keep you posted once I purchase the car and the impressions after some time driving. Thanks again!
Hi guys. I ended up buying the CR-V for my wife. As I have a sedan already, I think it will be a good balance for the times when we need more space for the kids and cargo. I wanted to wait for the 2014 CX-5, but it would take at least 1 more month for it to arrive at the dealership. So far I like it a lot. But the MPG, wind noise in highways, and dim lights at night are some downsides of it. But my family loves the extra space and the "higher" feeling compared to a sedan.
Nice and informative review. Not just purely commenting on "how fast", "how powerful", "performance", like other motor magazines or TV. You guys managed to present various aspects of the CX-5. By the way Dave, your gloves look nice and cool! ;)
Its the best compact suv in the segment It is reliable as lexus looks good and great on fuel consumption 6 spd automatic transmission no bullshit cvt na reliable engine and enough space in the back seat The cargo is small but you can put on the roof some mutlu and you good to go Mazda ia the best car brand today up there with lexus the is way more luxurious but cost 2 times more Great car that with every 10k km oil changes will last 300-400k km with no major problems
The Mazda website states the Mazda cx5 grand touring comes with the upgraded 184 hp engine. Seems like a big thing to make a mistake on. The base sport model has the engine you guys are talking about.
Hey Dave........ great review. Regardless of this car or another one, I like your communication style and the way you articulate. Good job. Also, I live in a colder snowy climate in north central WA, just like north Idaho where you filmed this. I LIKED your wool jacket. Where did you get that? I want one like that! Please let me know! Thanks!
The 2014 in the touring model is around $24,000 and has a more powerful 2.5L engine, the same one producing over 180hp on the new, and awesome 6. Also, Mazda has been testing the engine for years before putting it on the 3 for the 13 model year. It's just a damn fine car.
Alex, now I am even more in doubt. Especially because I just read something on Internet about the 2014 CX-5 with around 180 hp. If that is the case, I will be strongly leaning towards the CX-5 now. Especially if you guys review the CX-5 again and say that its lack of power is fixed. A side note, just watched the rear view mirror video about Accord x Passat. I am almost considering buying the Accord instead of the CR-V/CX-5 as it is cheaper and appears to have a lot of room too. O man...
Very nice review. Can't help thinking whether the missing automated tail-gate is something you really would miss. Maybe it's one of those things where you miss it once you've lived with it. Otherwise it seems a little excessive to me :)
I test drove the Mazda as well as the CRV and new Ford Escape and thought the Mazda was lacking in power and features for the price. The interior is sparse and the navigation looks simplistic as compared to the competition. The Ford Escape packed the most technology, power and driving fun in one package.
i like the ford escape better because it has more horses, 155 hp is just not enough. actually the redesign hyundai santa fe and kia sorrento start at $23,000 and comes with 7 seats. but best value is definetly the honda cr-v
Actually the stats they gave in the video are correct. Their review is for the 2013 CX-5 which comes with the same 2.0L 155HP no matter which style sport/touring/grand touring. The updated 184HP is only for the new 2014 models and is standard on the Touring and Grand Touring models.
28 mpg on average compared to the 21.5 - 22 I'm getting with my '12 Rav4 Base, not a bad increase. Though, the '13 Rav4 is supposed to be getting better mileage now. I think it will come down to the drive. I like the Mazda styling better than the new Rav4.
it was interesting to see a 6'4" guy can stand under the tailgate but with no power buttons could a 5'4" person reach the handle to pull it down. Also does it get so high that it may hit in a low garage.
Dave, I have to disagree with you. I have a Mazda CX-5 and I have to say that I think the steering is a little on the light side. But it does weight up nicely in the corners though.
Can you please give me some reviews? How is it in terms of maintenance and acceleration ? Or from any other aspect? Do you have diesel 2.2 AWD? Many thanks
@4:48. I am concerned about the long term reliability with the 13:1 (14:1 in other continents) compression ratio and the direct injection (DI) technology in gasoline engines. Go to Mazda CX-5 forum and look at the tread "rare violent engine starts" with 123 replies as of now.. Owners complain about engine knocking at cold start. Carbon deposition (intake valve) and jerkiness have been reported by owners of other cars with DI engines (see also Juke, BMW, and Audi forums). Otherwise great car.
buildmorefarms100 Well to each their own I suppose. But So far so good on our 2013 Santa Fe Sport. I'm not a fan boy by any means but when cross shopping at the time, Hyundai had the best bang for buck package out there. A strong warranty pushed us over the edge in terms any hesitancy with quality. Hope you're right! :)
I agree but I'm shopping right now (2017) for a CUV...and the Sportage is a nice vehicle but gets really crappy fuel economy. The CX-5 is a fair bit better.
I am in such a doubt about which one to buy between the CX-5 and the CRV. Does the CRV feel stronger/faster than the CX-5? Is the CRV that much "boring" compared to the CX-5? Sorry, is just that I did not get to drive them both for long time. Any input will be greatly appreciated.
Why would anyone use a stick with a SUV? Sticks are too hard to use under certain conditions ie hills, tight places, women drivers, drivers who don't know how to use a stick can't borrow it, etc. So that leaves 99.9% who should only use the auto...
"Sticks are too hard to use under certain conditions ie hills" Bullshit. Only if you're incompetent. "women drivers" Sexist pig. "drivers who don't know how to use a stick can't borrow it" That's a problem? "Jeez I'm sorry buddy, you can't borrow it..." Yo's can't steal it either.
Greater control in every situation with a manual. Going up hill, you can keep it in a lower gear of your choosing. Think it's too difficult to start on a hill? PRACTICE! I've only driven manuals my whole life, including on the steep hills in San Francisco. Much greater control going down hill. Much safer staying in lower gears in inclement weather, such as rain and especially snow; this won't require you to hit your brakes as often or as hard, which is usually what leads to someone losing control. And best of all, a manual transmission is the best anti-theft system!
@Cloud Strife - I say we cut off a finger for everytime we misspeak but if that was the case ... we'd be walking around with stumps for hands :-) Sorry 'bout that - Dave
5:16 - - a German luxury feel versus a cheap import feel? Isn't German imported to the US? And then does "cheap import feel" mean Japanese or Korean (or both)? Just askin'.
I'll buy one of these SUVs, someone can tell me about any problem with the engine in this car? I have confidence in Mazda but... I'm asking just in case 😉
Why aren't you telling about the cargo space. This car is tiny! Everyone compares it to the cr-v, forester. Price - maybe, but the size and cargo space - dont know.. It's a good car, but very small. Good for a lady and downtown driving. CX-9 on the other hand is a big car with the V-6 and bad consumption. Don't get why Mazda phased out the CX-7
@herrdoktorknowitall - Old habits die hard. I'm a former news reporter & anchor ... I also have a pen with me ... just in case I need to take notes :-) Dave

just drove homw after buying my used 2013 cx5 with 103k miles and im loving it, was turniing around and the adapting head lights threw me off!!!

go check out consumer reports

Nice Dave keep doing this excelent work my friend I really enjoy it
@Leonaristo - we appreciate it. Thank you for being a loyal subscriber - Dave
Its the best compact suv in the segment
It is reliable as lexus looks good and great on fuel consumption
6 spd automatic transmission no bullshit cvt na reliable engine and enough space in the back seat
The cargo is small but you can put on the roof some mutlu and you good to go
Mazda ia the best car brand today up there with lexus the is way more luxurious but cost 2 times more
Great car that with every 10k km oil changes will last 300-400k km with no major problems
Why would you want a $25K compact ute with an auto hatch closer to add cost and break down the line? It's omission is a plus, not a minus.
Thank you. Keep up the good work.
The Mazda website states the Mazda cx5 grand touring comes with the upgraded 184 hp engine. Seems like a big thing to make a mistake on. The base sport model has the engine you guys are talking about.
@thekillersheep1 - I wish we had our pick but the companies that send us vehicle make the choice - we're just happy to receive and review 'em - Dave
the Grand Touring has 184-Hp not 155-hp that would be the sport if Im not mistaken
Mazda CX-5 and VW Tiguan are my favorite crossovers they look so sporty and cool
the new 2014 and 2015 in the touring and grand touring its a 2.5L with 184hp
thank you @derek l. sanchez, that WAS a big thing to make a mistake on - Dave

i was gonna say the same thing with him before he say german style interior,i like the interior of cx 5 so much...
Great Review guys. I am considering this car. I hear that the diesel version is coming to US soon. Any information on that ? Thanks.
Very nice review. Can't help thinking whether the missing automated tail-gate is something you really would miss. Maybe it's one of those things where you miss it once you've lived with it. Otherwise it seems a little excessive to me :)
@Kelvin Ch'ng - yep, slip of the tongue. Good catch - Dave
I test drove the Mazda as well as the CRV and new Ford Escape and thought the Mazda was lacking in power and features for the price. The interior is sparse and the navigation looks simplistic as compared to the competition. The Ford Escape packed the most technology, power and driving fun in one package.
Actually the 2014 GT and GS comes with the 2.5 184hp engine but in 2013 all trims are 2.0 engine
Yeah, Dave participated in TFL car show with Roman and Nathan.
Dave, you are a gentleman.
You should try it with the new 2.5 liter, also waiting for a review on the new 6
i like the ford escape better because it has more horses, 155 hp is just not enough. actually the redesign hyundai santa fe and kia sorrento start at $23,000 and comes with 7 seats. but best value is definetly the honda cr-v

FYI Mazda has been around since 1931 . “The year 1931 was when Mazda, then called the Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. “
Escape is not rwd. It's fwd. Even the awd are all fwd but can give power to the rear if the car needs it.
3:56 MX-5? :) I know, I want one of those too.
Good review gents thanks
he is holding the pen as a memory grip to not for get any lines. great trick

Did you guys do a review on the 2013 Toyota RAV4?
at 4:00 you called it an MX-5? :)
How would you guys say this compares to the Subaru XV Crosstreck?
Dave, I have to disagree with you. I have a Mazda CX-5 and I have to say that I think the steering is a little on the light side. But it does weight up nicely in the corners though.
Can you please give me some reviews? How is it in terms of maintenance and acceleration ? Or from any other aspect? Do you have diesel 2.2 AWD? Many thanks
Can you please review the Dodge Caravan, Dodge Journey, and some of the missing Chrysler products
Please make a review of the 2013 sta fe xl. Thnks.
3:58 did you really mean mx5 or cx5?
You guys know your tester has the 2.5 L not the 2.0 L. And only the sport model with FWD is available with the stick...
They're reviewing the 2013 model. The 2.5L started on the 2014 model.
@4:48. I am concerned about the long term reliability with the 13:1 (14:1 in other continents) compression ratio and the direct injection (DI) technology in gasoline engines. yes! The CX-5 will get a skyactiv 2.5 engine soon for sure n follow by Skyactiv-D
are you working with TFLcar?
Great jobs.
Hyundai & Kia are compelling bang for the buck alternatives in this segment!
Korean's rock!
buildmorefarms100 Well to each their own I suppose. But So far so good on our 2013 Santa Fe Sport. I had a Sonata once, loved it!
I agree but I'm shopping right now (2017) for a CUV...and the Sportage is a nice vehicle but gets really crappy fuel economy. The CX-5 is a fair bit better.
Brown haired guy - What brand is that coat? Thanks
Diesel please. Also want manual with AWD

Bullshit. Only if you're incompetent.
"women drivers"
Sexist pig.

The base model only offers 155 hp, the other models are 184 hp which is better than most, like the dinky Rav4 and CRV
Damn here in Australia, $30,000 will get you....the base model only
that update didn't happen until Feb '13
@Cloud Strife - I say we cut off a finger for everytime we misspeak but if that was the case ... we'd be walking around with stumps for hands :-) Sorry 'bout that - Dave

Per true delta site appears reliable.
Nothing wrong so far and mine is a 2014.
at 3:59 did he just say mx5?
Driving with a pen in the hand... taking notes maybe? While driving? It's supposed to make him look smarter? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Luis Sampaio Are you trying to make a joke, insult or mock me?
Everyman Driver I am polite, I don’t insult people. At least strangers. So are you going to answer my question? 🤔
Luis Sampaio LoL
Nice car. Great for mazda!
rav4 2013 Limited is the best crossover ; )
yes he did
Do you guys ever go below the snow belt? Lol
lol MX5? 3:52
crappy wireless mics.... overmodulated, very annoying.
Can you help me ? please ? i am looking for work please help me...i have 21 years
Do we really need to hire two grown men to discuss a car that will most likely be bought for teenage girls?
Why aren't you telling about the cargo space. This car is tiny! Everyone compares it to the cr-v, forester. Price - maybe, but the size and cargo space - dont know.. It's a good car, but very small. Exterior looks a bit plain and cheap. Not a real wow factor exterior. That would be my biggest dig at it.
you should've taken the diesel. hears it's more powerful
CX5 is definitely lacking HP, it's the same engine they stick into the smaller Mazda3, but that engine on the CX5??
The emergency brake stick looks ugly
@herrdoktorknowitall - Old habits die hard. I'm a former news reporter & anchor ... I also have a pen with me ... just in case I need to take notes :-) Dave
I'll let you guys figure that out....
dave is from TFL car funny
Just wait for the Diesel!!
Only in the US is 28MPG good... LOL
"Idaho or some such place"
And the crv is pretty horrible, cheap plastics, boring, slow, etc. I'd say the Forester is 1st, this is 2nd, Crosstrek 3rd, Escape 4th.
YEAH 🤟🏽
why do you have a pen in your hand while driving??? :D
The editing drives me crazy, the cuts over the shoulder for no reason and cuts to the camera to the reviewer's profile talking to the invisible no one off camera is totally self conscious and trying to propel the review forward, but all it does is make me want to turn it off. Dave. Why in every single video are you driving while holding a pen? Are you really taking notes while driving?
They hotttt bwoy...
My God!!!! Dave is so hot
MX-5 lol
it sucks end of story
