  • In this exclusive AARP interview, the iconic actor talks about his definition of success and
how his passion for Westerns drove him to make the multi-film “Horizon: An American
    Saga.”
Costner talks about his unexpected entry into acting given his family’s background. He grew
up in a traditional, conservative household, and Costner’s father did not initially support his
dream to make movies. But Costner still found a way to break into Hollywood in the mid-to-
late ’80s and starred in a string of hit films including “The Untouchables” (1987), “Bull Durham” (1988), “Field of Dreams” (1989), “JFK” (1991) and “The Bodyguard,” with
    Whitney Houston (1992).
Costner explains why he has such a strong passion for Westerns. After starring in
“Silverado” (1985), he went all in to make the historical Western “Dances with Wolves”
(1990), in which he played the lead role of Union Army Lt. John J. Dunbar and was
coproducer, director and even a financier of the film. It went on to win seven Oscars,
including best actor and best director for Costner and best picture. Throughout the years,
Costner continued his journey through the West in films such as “Wyatt Earp” (1994) and
“Open Range” (2003) as well as TV shows “Hatfields & McCoys” (2012) and “Yellowstone”
(2018-present), where he played patriarch John Dutton.
Costner breaks down his latest career-defining gamble, the ambitious multi-film “Horizon:
An American Saga.” He is the cowriter, director and producer of the series, and personally
financed $38 million to bring the project to life. Chapter 1 of the series was released in June
2024 and is now available to stream digitally.
Kevin Costner is featured on the cover of the August/September 2024 issue of “AARP The
    Magazine.”

I purchased Horizon via You Tube digital UHD for $24.99. I watched the film, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, while the run time was a bit over 3 hours. for me the story and the pacing were not an issue, it did not lag. I was invested in the film and, then it was over. I had no problem following the story arcs of those involved. I was not disappointed. I truly hope that Mr. Costner can see his vision completed. We need more people willing to tell these important stories of our history, the human element, what it was like, man's inhumanity to man and man's ability to rise to the challenge to overcome, the struggle for life and survival.

VOD saved it after it didnt do well in cinema. Hes already filming part 3 and the 4th chapter is in development !!! i seriously cant wait!

@@G30RG3KA Kevin started filming part 3 back in May but then the money ran out. He was going to use the Horizon 1 box office proceeds to pay for production costs on #3....but it flopped. Home Video is Not going to come close to covering that $100 Million deficit.

    • @ruthafritap
      @ruthafritap Месяц назад

@@daveclark8337 That is not correct actually. He stopped filming chapter 3 because he had to promote chapter 1. He will go back to filming in August.
Aside from VOD, there are still physical media sales that will be released in September. And Kevin has not even sold the movies to any streaming platform. The $100 million budget is for TWO movies. Horizon Chapter 1 has made $33 million worldwide so far against $50 million budget, I think Kevin will be fine.

Kevin had investors put up the first $100 million for Horizon and then Kevin spent another $40 million over that. But they lost it All because it bombed massively at the box office selling only $28 million (of which the theaters keep half). The ticket sales won't even cover the Advertising budget.

I didn't like the flipping back and forth between each story. It was difficult to keep up with each story. Horizon is 3 hours long. Most likely won't watch the second movie. Very disappointing. I believe it would of been better as a mini series. I really wanted to like this movie. Was excited to see it. Had to pay to stream it. It wasn't awful just editing missed the mark for me. Tell one story at a time.

Did you not know it was 3 hours long when you bought a ticket? And that it was just one of 4 films which meant it would require a serious investment of time and mental energy to follow?

Peoples attention spans have just changed alot. I'm trying to ground myself from all this technology. This film is seriously beautiful. i cant wait for part 2 and 3 and 4. glad VOD helped alot with this. People need to appreciate art and movie making again. Like Kevin said, when he wished a movie like this was made for him. I feel like it was made for me in a way. but also for all of us. I love this movie and id even invest in it if i could. its more beautiful than anything i've seen in a long time. Thank you so much Kevin. i wish i could say it in person.

It's certainly not the first time that Costner's ego was bigger than his talents.
