Fantastic and good looking build, kind of my dream build actually. Just swap in a 44T chainring, maybe downsize the tires a little bit to about 42mm, and I'll be ready to conquer all the roads the Earth can throw at me.
It was over $4k and the frame only was roughly $700 for frame/fork. Now it might be different. Just look online and I'm sure you can see current prices after covid. Good luck and make your dreams come true.
I'm doing a build just like this with somewhat less spendy components for similar reasons to your friend. Beautiful bike!! Question - was the White Industries front crank chosen because the SRAM 32T crank wouldn't work, or just for the cool looks? (and it DOES look cool). Thanks.
@@anthonysbike Thanks for the reply. My concern is getting a small enough chainring on it. Can a 32T ring be had on one of the road cranks? I appreciate your help. This is my first build and I hope to ride the bike a lot. Like your friend, I have knee issues and like to ride where there are hills. And I just turned 70. So getting the gearing right is critical to the success of the project.
@@anthonysbike I haven't bought anything at all yet except the frame (Straggler, 50cm, 650b). I'm trying to do enough research so that there are no surprises when I get the stuff bought and start putting it together. Your friend's build uses the SRAM GX Eagle setup on the back with the White Ind. crank up front. What I have been thinking about is the entire NX Eagle groupset , including the crank. But I have seen a few builds and posts that suggest that a MTB crank would not work on a Straggler frame. Thanks again for the guidance.
@@joeharder4501 yeah - you need a crank that is compatible with a road spacing 68mm bb. You can rig it with spacers, but i’d just get a road spaced one to begin with.
What? 47mm is barely clearing.. That's the 650b? Because my 2013 Opus Zermatt took that same tire with loads of spare room... And a 3x8 wide range drive..
@@anthonysbike I'm 215lbs and there's no flex that would get my rear wheel to rub. My front fork however is bent after being right hooked this summer by a sedan
He’s about 5’10”. I’d say if you ur 5’8”-5’10” it should be fine especially if your inseam is around 30”-32”. The top tube is straight so you want a little clearance if possible. He got fitted at a surly dealer and this is the size they recommended as well as what I had thought he should get prior to his fit. Good luck!
@@anthonysbike Awesome! Thanks for the detailed response! I'd been looking at a 54 and 52 after triple checking the geo of each, and your comments here, I'll roll with the 52. Can't wait!
Why does anyone need a 32-52 gear ratio? At 90rpm that's about 4mph? When do you ever go that slow? Realistically if you're climbing you might even prefer a slower cadence so perhaps less than 3mph.
Thanks for the comment and great question. I think there is no right answer here, but my buddy weighs over 215lbs and does not have the best knees. The climb we just did over the weekend ended up being 3k feet in under 15 miles. There were a bunch of hairpin turns that easily reached 20%. This bike was also initially built with bike packing in mind - so add another 50lbs with water - the 50T was def in full use. What is right for some might not be right for all.
This build stands the test of time.. It's now 2024 and it is still a kick ass setup by todays standards..

I have the same frame, but all black components. The silver build has had me scheming though! Love it. Flat bars makes this bike look very fun NGL.
Nice! Drop bar def can be fun too! I’m a big fan of silver 🤌🏼

Yeah!!! For sure. The 47-48mm tires are pushing it. He was getting rubs whenever he stood up. I’d recommend 45mm at most.
Very cool. Very bespoke. New subscriber here . cheers from Canada !
Thanks!!
nice component choices
What a lovely looking bike...👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
That’s one beautiful bike
It's my dream bike, import makes it bit costly here in India. Surly Bridge Club is available but straggler is not unfortunately.
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
That looks great.
Beautiful perfect awesome
waooo... beatiful red one...
It would be helpful if you provide information like cost of total build and cost of frame only.

Gorgeous
Nice bike 😁
l am going with the midnight special because of the thru axle..
Good choice. Def will have the tire clearance as well!
Dang really nice. Is it the 700c
650b!
Thanks for the review. What did/does it weigh? I like the build but Surly bikes are usually too heavy
Roughly 24lbs
What free body hub is on to work with the sram gx drive train ?
Xd driver on his hub

The Sram Road cranks will work just fine!

Hey how’s it going which Paul breaks do you have ? Are they flat mount Paul Klamper breaks or are they the post mount/I.S. Klampers Thanks
Surly Straggler frame is post mount. So I'd assume post.
Yes, post mount on this bike. You will need I.S. To post adapters.
$$$. Beautiful, but damn.

Sometimes i haul a dog trailer with my bike that weighs about 50kg and some light gears is preferable in the hills 😁

Agreed.. Sold a 2020 XC8 TREK SX and went back to a 3x8 with 11-40
