Hell yeah HWH! I wish we had retailers like THAT around here. They actually care about their customers and the reputation rather the bottom line. So glad you got it squared away!
Coming from a computer/phone repair background here. An IPAD has more adhesive holding the screen on than THAT. In my 8 years of repair...thought id never see a device THAT expensive be so lacking of adhesive. Love your videos! Smooth Sailing!
Not quite sticky tape, its 3M VHB double sided " tape " I say that because it is more like a flattened compound. This is the industry standard for overlay touchscreens. I have replaced hundreds of touchscreens from 5in monitors all the way up to 48in panels and always used the same product and have had great results having seen what you were given I can clearly see not enough product was used for that application not even close. Great job as always troubleshooting and I wouldn't hesitate using the 3M product in the future if it is installed correctly it is pretty much fool-proof.
VHB is some seriously strong tape.
Clearly the company needs to stop trying to be NASA, and use enough adhesive.
Especially for what they charge.
Walmart quality is not acceptable here.

Sidenote; When Simrad bought out Navico, Simrad did nothing to support Navico customers and the customers who had inoperable Navico autopilots were stuck with inoperable junk. At the time BOAT/US, who had a catalog sales business (before selling it to West Marine), and who sold most of the Navico autopilots, did not stand behind the warranties. Both Navico and BOAT/US knew of the fatal flaw with the Navico autopilots and chose to 'sweep the dirt under the rug'.
I really don't think they had a clue. I think he just make the call again and got a more reasonable person on the other end of the line. Not that having an audience does not sometimes help. It does. And yes, I think all big companies have some bad actors in their midst. Buyer beware.
There is less pride and durability in things made today than in generations past.
It was AMF that used to own Harley Davidson when they were crap. Brunswick owns Mercury Marine and a bunch of boat companies and has a great reputation for quality

I have repaired ribbon cables torn in that exact same way. I have came up with a few different methods and I have had good results. There is nothing wrong with double sided adhesive as long as the correct adhesive is used and the surfaces are properly prepared. I have hundreds of rolls of different types of adhesive tapes. By cousin works for a converter which takes adhesives and other products and converts them into products. I get all the roll ends left over that would end up in the trash.

in Australia, Consumer law protects us, even if "manufactures warranty" expires, if the product fails to meet the expectations that it will be fit for purpose, then the consumer is covered. cheers

I had something similar to that on my VHF remote Mike station after two years the rubber on the Mike cord simply just rotted and fell off after getting online. I find that other people had the same problem. Haven’t found anybody that got them replaced by the manufacturer.
Simrad, B&G and lowrance are owned by Navico. Navico is part of Brunswick. After buying Navico they decided they didn't want to deal with me or my distributor anymore as we sell Garmin and Raymarine
I'm surprised B&G only stuck together with tape. Normally the issue with repairing marine electronics is first getting inside. I guess Navico have been copying phones which seem to be glued together these days to keep water out. Looking at B&G screen how were they keeping water out?
I learned from the two repair centers I talked to that they consider the whole unit as disposable. Which makes me wonder why they don't just glue them together.
Brunswick actually owns Lund fishing boats, along with mercury motors, Boston whaler and a whole host of other marine companies. For a time they also made pool tables and exercise equipment. It would almost be fair to say a boat company makes your bowling balls rather than the other way around.

Failing 7 months out of warranty is exactly as engineered. That means that you will just buy a new one and they can get another $6,000 sale from you and they saved a few dollars per unit on assembly by using tape instead of an adhesive. Win-win in the corporate world.
I hate the disposable, designed to fail economy that many companies have gone to. It is wasteful and wastes a lot of money as well. What is always fun is to take one of these " intended lifespan" products and repair them permanently like what you have attempted here and screw the corporate trash out of their devious plan to milk all your money out of you while they fill our landfills with still working equipment. Good repair and I hope it lasts for decades so you can be an example on the internet on exactly how to fix these, ruining this business plan for this product.
You could fix it just got a solder everything back together with some special tape high temperature plastic and super glue

Fail 7 months... that's not a failure, it's a design choice to make you buy more so items are made less durable than they should be or will fail much sooner than needed. You can see the same thing all over in every sector, where pieces of whole devices are made to fail within a certain limits that just beyond the guaranties.
You would certainly think that equipment made for offshore operations would be sturdier than that.

I'm honestly surprised someone of your philosophy would even own a $6000 chart plotter. A cheap tablet with a navigation app will do 95% of what expensive electronics can do. There's many people sailing across oceans right now using only a tablet. I'm actually somewhat surprised you haven't welded together your own sextant and drawn your own sea charts 😂
Nothing wrong with a tablet or even a cell phone. Might be a problem with guessing someone's philosophy. : ) But I love the convenience and security of a system that can plot the route, watch the depth, AIS, Radar, and steer the boat. And I'm delighted that I can save enough money making stuff I enjoy making so I can buy the things I like. That's my philosophy so right that down, but write it on a napkin. I'd not bother carving it in stone.

Proving yet again that "marine" isn't always stuff that is over built but is just expensive.
We learned the lesson of sticky tape here in Arizona, where it gets 120F and more inside our cars. We do the same thing, adhesive them together....
I've seen 160F inside of a black car here in Texas.
Good luck with it Doug. Had no luck with Simrad 3 units in 15 years. Last one deletes an air bubble in the screen.
Hard to get good stuff any more. Changed to Raymarine.

You sometimes can solder the ribboncable togetther. Another way is taping them and then use conductive ink to connect them. I have done the first several times (in measurement gear)
I had a 15" monitor from a big ship in for repair. The glass was about 1cm think. The problem was the cable between motherboard and LCD interface. About 20 wires and the isolation was completely turned in to powder. That was a 5000 euro monitor from 2008. The answer from the manufacturer, "we do not sell parts from then any more, to old" It is bizar that this happens. I have seen enough isolation fail but that was on WW2 radio equipment using rubber.
That's how modern business works. Not much money in spare part when the device is more than 5 years old.
It's just: buy new device, give us your money! Please!
This is one of the reasons why our environment is feeling a bit tight by now!
I was thinking along the same line. People who do repairs on SMC or mobile phones are used to solder such small bits.

That torn ribbon cable might be fixable, but it's a lot of microsoldering. Maybe solder paste applied with a siringe and hot air reflow? The kapton tape should be fine with it.

Not if I was just a day sailor. But with armature crew it is an awesome piece of kit. If there is an AIS or Radar target that breaks the permitter it will let you know. And the autopilot that can follow the wind. That is awesome.

I have bought ribbon cable over the years on ebay you just count the contacts and the length. Alot of that stuff is common asian items

I don't think B&G had thought that you would place it up with the front angled downwards. Either laid down in a consol with the front up or placed in a holder with the top angled backwards. Maybe they learn from this? BTW. I have Simrad on my boat.
