খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব ১৩-১৪ সালে গ্রীকরা সেফটি পিনের মতন কিছু গয়না বানিয়েছিলেন কিন্তু পিনের ছুঁচলো মুখটা কোনও খাপে ঢুকে যাওয়ার ব্যবস্থা তারা করতে পারেননি তাই ওদের তৈরি "ফিবুলা" গয়নার কথা লোকে ভুলেই গিয়েছিল।আমরা যে রকম সেফটি পিন চিনি সেই রকমটা আবিষ্কারের পেছনে বেশ মজার একটা গল্প আছে। পেশায় মেকানিক ওয়াল্টার হান্টার নামে এক অ্যামেরিকান ব্যক্তি একবার তার বন্ধুর কাছ থেকে পনেরো ডলার ধার নেন। তারপর থেকে সেই ধার আর তিনি কিছুতেই শোধ করে উঠতে পারছিলেন না। এই ভাবেই চলছিল এমন সময় একদিন হঠাৎ তার মনে হল, "আমি যদি নতুন কিছু একটা আবিষ্কার করতে পারি তাহলে তো কিছুটা অর্থ উপার্যন করতে পারব, তাহলে বন্ধুর দেনাটা শোধ হয়ে যাবে!" এই ভেবে তিনি একটা আট ইঞ্চি লম্বা তারের টুকরো নিয়ে সেটাকে মাঝখানে গোলাকার ভাবে বেঁকিয়ে সেফটি পিনের আকার দিয়ে ফেললেন তিনি। মাথার দিকে একটা খাপ লাগিয়ে দিলেন যাতে ছুঁচলো অংশটা গায়ে ফুঁটে না যায়! আরেকটু নাড়াচাড়া করতেই সেফটি পিন তৈরি!
The safety pin was invented while Hunt was twisting a piece of wire and trying to think of something that would help him pay off a debt of fifteen dollars. He later sold his patent rights to the safety pin for four hundred dollars to the man that he owed the money to.On April 10, 1849, Hunt was granted US patent #6,281 for his safety pin. Hunt's pin was made from one piece of wire, which was coiled into a spring at one end and a separate clasp and point at the other end, allowing the point of the wire to be forced by the spring into the clasp.It was the first pin to have a clasp and spring action and Hunt claimed that it was designed to keep fingers safe from injury, hence the name.
