- It might seem like a dumb idea; Chinese lanterns - known colloquially as China balls - are rather flimsy. But they only cost five bucks to replace, so buy a dozen! Or buy the faux-silk version, which is a lot tougher. And they can live up on the ceiling where they won’t be in anyone’s way. Use them to provide a broad, indiscriminate, soft wash of light in a room, or get even fancier by draping part of the light!
Seriously underrated channel!
That is genius, I can't believe I never thought of that!
Awesome!
what light bulbs do you recommend? i'm new to videography and lighting
Unicorn light fixture stores have some high output light bulbs vs regular 15w energy saving leds... they cost a litlle more BUT not like photography stores...
Just watch out for flicker in LED and fluorescent bulbs, as well as some rare-gas bulbs (e.g. xenon). As long as the flicker is fast -- say, 1000 Hz or faster -- it shouldn't set up a STROBING effect with your camera's shutter. If the flicker goes with the electrical current -- say, at 60 Hz (N. America) or 50 Hz (Europe) -- it may well set up a flicker cadence with your 30 fps or 60 fps (USA) or 25/50 fps (Europe) shutter speed. Confused? Search for "shutter speed flicker" (or "strobing") on RUclips and you should see some examples of what you DON'T want to happen.
But -- yes! China balls are great!
