I have a couple dozen cheap sleigh bells strung together on an old shoelace. It is far and away my favorite snare drum modifier. It's light enough that it controls overtones without killing the drum and it gives a very unique metalic rasp to the decay.
I made one for my hi hats out of paracord, 5 house keys and two wing nuts. The cord is tied in a large loop and hangs the keys at the top edge of the cymbals. I love the sound and it adds a little sizzle without being to loud.
I made a groove wedge out of an old skateboard deck. I just mounted some L brackets to it and rounded the edges the were closest to the shell. I also did a home brew to fit a Pearl Optimount on a 6-lug 14" rack tom. Same general idea, I cut some sheet metal, drilled holes on either end, then rounded the edges. It wasn't the prettiest but it got the job done without wrecking the mount.
I'm inspired by the comment that a jingle ring can be made of ANYTHING. So, I'm using some braided jute cord to form the base, & bits that I find while walking my dog. Her contribution is her old vaccination tags! Other items include two cat collar jingles, a lighter top, several bottle caps, an old Canadian dime (sorry, Canada), tire lug caps, washers, metal nuts, bottlecaps, paperclips, can tabs, a small wingnut, and a few random bits of metal. I've added some found beads & a small leggo piece for pops of color. Everything is attached with some simple knots in the jute cord, beaded chain, thread, split key rings or discarded fishing line. It's still a work in process because I'm still finding items. But it does rattle & I feel that it adds a bit of "dirt" when placed on my early '70's hi hats.
This reminds me of the time I went to a well know dinner place after my dad's funeral. There was a live band and a dance floor. The ladies were on the floor and wouldn't you know this older guy pulled out a tambourine. Then he started hitting the ladies' booties with the tambourine. It looked like all had a good time.
When I was in my 20’s we would put on punk rock shows in the living room of my apartment. It was in a bad part of town so we mostly got away with it. One night the house was packed. The band was set up in the kitchen with the kids dancing and going nuts in front. The front door was just to the right. There was a huge skinhead roughing people up and generally behaving like a jerk. The singer of the band pulled out a tambourine and started whacking the skinhead in time with the band. Singer guy was dancing and keeping time on the big oaf as the crowd joined in. They all grabbed and escorted the troublemaker out the front door. All this to the violent THAWACK! of a cheap tambourine. Punk rock.

Just did a ChingRing for the hi-hat. I used a piece of copper pipe, bend it, hammered and the put the jingles... Sounds great!
Great video. Thanks.

rather than using an existing e-ring you can slice a dead drumhead into one using a compass a la rdavidr
Yep! You can also slice up other shapes for use on cymbals. So many options!
Where we can get those e-rings??
Wherever you get drumheads from OR you can go DIY and make them from old drumheads- same material.
