    First. The character 王 is also believed to be originated from a drawing of an axe.Because the axe was a symbol of political power in prehistoric and ancient China, not only of the warriors, so it's easy to understand why 士 also means "scholar" because during most of the Chinese dynasties, scholars had more authority than warriors.

      I heard it was also probably influenced by the Cong, a ceremonial jade vessel used by kings that looked just like 王 from one side.

      @@Fummy007 That it's possible too, since the character 玉(jade) is just 王 with one more tiny stroke added.

      sounds off to me though, like a low rising tone (5), where it should be a low-level tone

    In teochew 士 is se6, and to say scholar you can say 學者(Hak jia) or 秀才(siu jai).
